EARLY CHILDHOOD Kaden was born to muggle parents in Surrey, year 2031. He had a rather ordinary childhood: went to nursery, went to primary school, the whole lot. The only thing was, he had always been a bit different to most of the other boys his age. Since he was small, he enjoyed sitting with his mother while she put on her makeup, and even one day started playing in it himself. He adored bright colors, fashion, glitter, and most of all, singing. He would sing in his bedroom, sing in his kitchen, sing in the corridors at school. And he was quite good at it.
He also liked boys. There was one boy in particular, Corey Whitman, who Kaden secretly adored. He would spend a lot of his time trailing along behind him, watching him with his friends and dreaming about what it would be like to be that close to him. He was athletically talented (he played in the best junior cricket league in Surrey), and in Kaden's eyes, he was incredibly handsome, with dark brown hair and the brightest blue eyes he had ever seen.
Unfortunately, there came a time around his fourth year of primary school when his unique self brought with it a little too much attention. The other boys in his year started teasing him, calling him a "puff", a "fairy", a "girl". They teased him for liking the color pink, for liking puppies and kittens more than bugs and snakes. Some of the older boys would sometimes push or shove him as they were passing in the corridor. But one day, things escalated further than they ever had before.
The school bell had just rung, and most of the students had gone home for the day. Kaden had to stay behind and clean gum from the underside of the desks because he had come back to the teacher with some cheek earlier. By the time he was finished, it was nearly dark and he was looking forward to going home and feeding his hungry belly. He rounded a corner and suddenly was blocked off by a gang of boys who looked like they had been waiting. There, in the center, was Corey Whitman. Before he had a chance to say anything, rough hands were grabbing him and shoving him into an empty locker, yelling insults and kicking the door when it was shut. The last thing Kaden remembered seeing was the triumphant sneer on Corey's face as he was pushed inside.
He was in that locker for about 20 minutes, as the boys terrorized him from the outside. Those were the scariest 20 minutes of his life. He was certain they would have left him in there all night, too, just as they threatened they were going to do when he finally screamed and the locker door burst open, hitting one boy squarely in the nose and breaking it. Kaden ran, grabbing his backpack and nearly tripping over the boy with blood now covering the front of his shirt. He ran and ran, and didn't stop until he was through his front door, where he collapsed crying into his parents' arms.
The bullying that Kaden endured that night would cling to him like a nightmare. He became withdrawn, and began lashing out at friends, family, and teachers. He still had no idea what had happened that night, why the locker door had burst open on its own like that. He didn't think the boys knew either, but they seemed to keep their distance from him after that.
Overall, he sank into a pit of depression. He felt so different, from everyone. His parents, his peers, nobody knew what it was like to be him. Nobody knew what he struggled with every single day. After a long while of wallowing in negativity, Kaden heard somebody say something in passing that sparked his interest. "Light is more powerful than darkness; even the smallest flame can illuminate the darkest room. So it applies to us; if we let our positivity shine, no darkness on earth can touch us."
That was what Kaden wanted in his life. He wanted to be so positive, and so happy, that nobody could ever make him feel dark again. So that became his new goal. He started smiling more, he started singing more, and he finally started to love himself. He embraced everything he enjoyed to the best of his ability. He wore whatever crazy colors he wanted, put glitter on his bookbag, and walked into school with the brightest grin you can imagine. Sure, a lot of people were taken aback by his shift, but... once he started smiling, it was contagious!
A lot of things were answered for him when he received his Hogwarts letter, at least about that night at the lockers. His parents were shocked, but extremely supportive. His mum even let him dye his hair pink as a going-away present, something that Kaden absolutely fell in love with.
Even wearing his shield of positivity and self-love, Kaden still struggled with feelings of depression. But he told himself every time that his light would win out, repeating it like a mantra whenever those feelings started creeping in like devil's snare around his mind. He just hoped that wherever he was going, he would find love and acceptance to just be himself, whoever that ended up to be.
