Ro'an found it difficult to focus on the battle at hand - too in awe he was of the prowess and skill of his companions. In comparison, he seemed as clumsy as a newborn foal, stumbling and flailing about, unsure of his place in the world and how his legs worked. Every move they made, it seemed, was with precise calculation and expert level skill. He felt a stir within him, his muses coming to life. He was inspired, though it wasn't to write songs or tell stories. He was inspired to give it his best shot, to match them in skill.
With a deep breath, he mustered up as much strength as possible and launched himself at their foe, legs kicking out as he let out a scream. Kiera watched from her position of safety in the trees and had Ro'an been paying attention to her, he would have noticed a single tear roll down her cheek.

Santiel's eyelids fluttered. As from a long distance she heard her friend speaking to her but the words did not make sense, they were distant and strange as though from another language. She tried to focus on Orelond's face but she only appeared a large yellow blur. She kept blinking and blinking but her mind would not clear the fog that had crept in. There was a taste of iron in her mouth as though she'd licked some weapon or something. Blackness crept back into her vision and fear filled her lungs making it hard to breathe. Was she dying? Was this it? And what was beyond that darkness? She'd never thought much of what came after until suddenly the after might be here and now.
Her whole world had narrowed to a pinprick and she was not sure what lay beyond that small hole of light. There was a feeling like soothing waves that washed over her and the panic began to ebb some. She could feel her own chest rising and falling with breath.
So then, she was alive.
She tried to open her eyes but they felt like they were glued shut with sap. She kept trying, trying to get them open to see what was going on around her. Was Orelond okay? She hoped she was not keeping Orelond away from the battle or risking her life. She would not allow Orelond to die for her.
Santiel made her eyes open though they felt so heavy that they fluttered shut again almost immediately. But she had glimpsed Orelond's face and the tears that trailed down her face.
For her.
This time she made her eyes stay open. Her mouth still tasted of blood, but this time it was more of a thin trickle. Her tongue was thick but she pushed the words out, even though it was nothing but a whisper. Barely even that.
"I'm okay."
They were perhaps the most wonderful words that Orelond had ever heard. Her tiny companion's chest rose and fell evenly and her eyes were heavy but bright. The bleeding had seemed to slow down.
She wiped Santiel's beak gently and laid her face next to her little friend's. "I would not have let you come to anymore harm. I forbid it." The tears cascaded down her face like a waterfall. She couldn't stop herself from sniffling.
While she had been waiting and watching, she had seen the blow fall on death's queen. The foul creature reeked of unholiness, something she'd once heard referred to as ichor or demon's blood.
It was everywhere and on everything. She doubted three baths would even be enough to get it all off. But she would not ever forget the look in the death mare's eyes. They had been black bottomless pits, but when the blow finally felled it her eyes had seemed to grow brighter. There seemed to be a hint of white and brown there, the hint of a soul that had been before it had become this terrible cursed thing.
It was only a flash of something that had been, that might be here before it's final moment. It feel with a terrible thud and the eyes stared sightless but normal to the skies above. It was over. Whatever dark thing had taken it's hold on her, it was now gone.
Orelond hoped that perhaps now the poor mare would find peace at last in the halls of her ancestors or the lands undying. She would not ever know for sure, but it gave herself some peace that the mare might finally find hers.
The battle was over and the evil vanquished for now. She could feel her adrenaline crashing, the tugging ache of sore and tired muscles. They would take their proof to the Forgemaster and get their coin. That would be the end of it.
Looking at her friend Santiel, she wondered perhaps if it had been worth it to do this task. But then again, Santiel and all the others had lived through this. They had freed the mare too. She would count this a win, even though it had been terrifying. She couldn't regret it.
There was no sense tryign to rethink it or redo it anymore. It was past and now it was time to move on.
Carefully, she helped Santiel find purchase in her hair. Though the injury hadn't been serious, it had frightened them both and it would do her well to take her rest. They would stop on the journey home in somewhere safe and warm with plenty of light after all this darkness.
She smiled to each of her companions and said her thanks for their help. She had not known them and she might never see any of them ever again, but they had impacted her life in a way that would forever remain.
Turning her head, she made her way slowly back to the Forgemaster to bring him proof of her deeds. Then a day or two of rest before she would continue on her journey. Somewhere out there awaited the stallion she loved. Something had happened to him, she knew that for sure now. He would never have been late to come to her. She would wait another day or two before leaving, but she would be preparing herself to find him. If she had to search the world over she would find him.
She was more scared now than before. She was ill-prepared today. She could not be if she meant to find him.

Camlann had been in many a battle before facing Death's Queen. He had faced armies, battalions, hordes; he had faced bloodthirsty hunters; he had faced all walks of life, but nothing like Death's Queen. She was another being of her own, something that couldn't be qualified or compared with anything else that he had ever had to face in battle. She was angry, twisted, and driven by a blood lust he had never before seen in any other creature. There was no salvation, no redemption for a mare that was so far gone. Death's Queen was so corrupted by her twisted heart that it had consumed her, there was nothing left to save and her only freedom from her twisted person would be death. It was a sad, grim reality.
The stallion had been knocked away by the mare's last attack, far enough so that it had prevented him from landing another blow on her. While he was accustomed to dealing the killing blows on many of his targets, the mercenary was just grateful the fight was over and the wretched creature was finally slain. He ignored the death rattle that escaped the mare's now lifeless body, having heard the horrible sound far too many times in his life. It had become like white noise to him over the years and was easy to block out; it was simply what one had to grow accustomed to when living the life of a sell-sword.
With little more to say, he simply gave a bow of his head as thanks to those that had aided his fight. "Come, Polaris." And without any other words, Camlann made his way back to the Forge to earn his payment, a new weapon, and would be back out on the road to travel and lend his talents to any others that needed them.
Polaris stuck close to Camlann and was oddly quiet. He had never before witnessed the death of another soquili, and seeing how cool and collected Camlann was only reminded the hummingbird of just how much death the stallion had witnessed, how much death the stallion must have delivered over the years. "Does it still bother you at all," he asked quietly, almost afraid of what Camlann might reply with.
"Aye.. but death comes for us all, eventually," was all that Camlann had to offer. The rest of the return trip was silent as they made their way back to the Forge.
