Having been knocked out by mushrooms one too many times, Maia had given up on trying to help the Forgemaster with his soup. She pushed through the dark woods, downtrodden and defeated, as Birch sat on her back with ears focused on an upsetting sound. Something had made the other woodland creatures go quiet and she could hear whatever it was moving around in the trees. Even Maia had noticed the unusual quiet.

"It's up above!" Birch's cry came too late, as a giant snake dropped from the trees above and lashed out at Maia. She moved just a moment too late and the snake's fangs sank into her shoulder. A swift maneuver freed her from the bite, but not without doing some damage. She did manage to get the serpent a pathetic slap with her tail in the process, however.

"Birch, hold on tight." Maia prepared herself for an unpleasant scuffle.

Birch, practically tied up in Maia's mane, shut her eyes tight and did exactly as she was told. "I'm never coming back to this forest!"

Maia felt a similar sentiment to Birch's. Why was every creature in this forest so angry?

The serpent, still half coiled around a tree branch, pulled itself back into the treetops and disappeared almost instantly. Maia tried her best to keep up with it, but between the creature's own camouflage and the blinding spots of sunlight filtering through the canopy she'd lost track of it.

Rather than stick around and wait for it to land another sneak attack, Maia decided to move away from the last spot she'd seen it. Maybe if they continued on towards the edge of the woods they could avoid this conflict all together.

Unfortunately, the serpent had different plans.

It had dropped to the ground and slithered its way around the pair of them. And Birch, so wrapped up in hair and nerves, had stopped listening for it. So, when Maia unknowingly approached the beast it went in for another bite.

Again caught off guard, Maia couldn't react in time. The serpent's teeth clamped down on her leg and no swift maneuvering could dislodge it. A stomp on its tail, however, did the trick.

The serpent slinked back up into the trees with a furious hiss, its tail bent in an unnatural angle. Maia kept her eye on it this time, taking note of the sun spots to avoid being blinded as she watched it slither over the branches.

She was ready for it as the snake went in for yet another bite and quickly skirted its strike. What she wasn't ready for was its fat, broken tail slapping her right in the face. Maia was stunned for a moment and the serpent began pulling itself back up into the trees. Before it could get completely out of reach, Maia chomped down on the snake's battered tail and gave it a good yank.

With Maia's tug on its tail, the serpent hissed in agony and lost its grip on the branch. It flopped to the ground with a heavy thump. It wasted no time in enacting its revenge and lunged straight at Maia. Instead of going for another bite, it wrapped itself tightly around her tail.

Which really didn't seem like much of an issue to Maia. It was a little uncomfortable, yes, but it didn't really hurt. Until the snake began to wrap tighter and tighter. Then it did start to hurt. And she was beginning to feel a bit exhausted- which was ridiculous considering the three naps she'd taken thanks to quesitonable mushrooms. Quite done with this snake- and these woods as a whole -Maia thrashed her tail against the ground until the snake released her.

Maia was starting to struggle. This serpent was a much more formidable foe than the obnoxious rabbit. Instincts screamed at her to turn tail and run. She was losing this fight and, honestly, this snake was probably big enough to eat her...

But honor and stubbornness refused to let her give up now. And, thankfully, as the snake was taking time to creep back up into the trees, Maia remembered something.

"Birch, are you still with me? I need your help." Even if Maia could crane her neck around enough to look for the little mouse, she wouldn't have seen Birch. She was thoroughly tangled up in Maia's mane, shivering in fear at the sounds of the fight. But she managed a tiny squeak in response to Maia's request.

"In the bag with the mushrooms is a bottle the Forgemaster gave me. Can you grab it and uncork it for me?" Maia watched the serpent closely as it slunk through the treetops, clearly feeling its own injuries. "I'll keep you safe, I promise."

"O-Okay..." Birch very cautiously untangled herself from the nest of hair she'd made and crept down to the bag hanging from Maia's neck. The sad sight of what had once been their meager collection of mushrooms awaited her. And the potion Maia needed. Heaving it out of the bag and up to the safety of Maia's back, Birch popped the cork off with a bit of effort. "Here!"

Eyes still locked on the serpent, Maia reached around and grabbed the top of the bottle with her mouth, downing the contents with a flick of her head. Hopefully this did what the Forgemaster said it would. Birch scrambled back into her hiding spot.

Already feeling a renewed rush of energy, Maia moved in closer to the serpent. It was time to end this. Hopefully.

With the mare back in range, the serpent made another strike. As refreshed as she felt, the potion hadn't quite taken effect yet and the snake left another mark on her hide.

In an attempt to drag the snake from it's high perch, Maia reared up on her hind legs and made to grab the snake's tail in her mouth once again. The serpent pulled its tail up just in time and, while she was distracted, gave Maia yet another bite. If nothing else, by the time this fight was over Maia would have at least a couple of cool scars to tell the story of.

Not that she was very happy about that thought. Though she wished to be a well-known knight some day, she was very done with this serpent and would rather end this than have a neat story to tell. Desperate to get the creature back into attacking range, she gave the tree it was curled up in a hefty kick. Despite its best efforts, the serpent slipped from its branch and fell back to the ground.

Now within her reach, Maia went straight for the snake. Her hooves stomped furiously on the ground, missing most of the time as the serpent slithered out of the way. But she didn't land a couple of hard hits, which received a satisfying hiss from the injured creature.

No longer in the safety of its treetops and severely hurt at this point, the serpent resorted to a dangerous, but potentially deadly tactic. Moving with surprising speed for something to large, it wrapped part of its body around Maia's neck and began to squeeze tightly. Maia choked both in shock and due to the fact that her windpipe was being crushed. This had turned bad very quickly.

Birch squeaked loudly as the beast's body began to intrude on her nest of safety.

To ensure its hold on its prey, the serpent sunk its teeth deep into Maia's neck as it continued to coil around her. There wasn't much she could do in this situation, but panic and instinct kicked in. She returned the snake's bite with one of her own, chomping down on whatever part of its body she could manage in her state.

Curled up in a frozen ball of fear, Birch could do little more than slowly climb further and further up Maia's mane as the snake's body crept closer and closer to her with each coil. But the sound of Maia's desperate gasps for air stirred some small amount of courage in her. She couldn't just let her new companion be over come by this monster!

Remembering a small pouch inside the bag around Maia's neck- which previous snooping told her held some sort of powder -she made the decision to go for it. Taking a very deep breath, Birch scampered from her spot and darted down the serpent's body- which, while terrifying, was quite safe considering the snake's mouth was busy biting Maia -and squeezed into the bag. She had no clue what this powder was, but nothing was worse than getting small particles in your eye, right? It was all she had to work with right now.

With another quick burst of courage, Birch shot out of the bag- pouch in paw -up Maia's neck, and right up next to the serpent's face. She covered her eyes and dumped the entire bag into the snake's eyes, then hightailed it back into her safe space.

The snake released its bite on Maia immediately and it's grip around her neck loosen. This gave the mare enough leverage to pull the snake almost completely off of her.

Thankfully for Birch, the powder's intended purpose was exactly what she had used it for. Completely blinded, the snake thrashed around helplessly as Maia worked on freeing herself from it's grasp. Several violent shakes of her head released the final coil and she dropped the serpent to the ground.

She needed a moment to catch her breath, glad to finally be able to breathe again and absolutely furious at having to deal with this in the first place. The potion had given her a small burst of vitality, but Maia was at the end of her rope. She just wanted to go home. They both could have avoided this mess if they snake had just minded its own business. But this conflict had to end one way or another and Maia wasn't interested in being a meal. With what fire her frustration gave her, she stepped up to the blinded serpent and stomped down on its tail once more.

She'd probably regret being so cruel later, but right now she was just tired.

The serpent squirmed pathetically, trying with what strength it had left to free its tail from under Maia's hoof. But she wasn't having any of it. In a last ditch effort, the creature turned around and made to strike at her one final time. But in its blinded state, it missed completely and only presented Maia with an opportunity to get in one last hit of her own.

Turning on a hoof- which wasn't the one holding down the snake, blessedly for it -Maia smacked the serpent to the ground with her tail and then swept it into the trunk of a tree. Finally defeated, the beast slithered up as high as it could into the branches of the tree and curled up. Maia gave a victorious snort and limped off towards the edge of the woods.

"I'm going home."

Birch said nothing in response. Still quite terrified, she was content to remain in Maia's mane. Being on her own didn't really seem appealing right now.
