Professor Wolfgang Deadman

Astronomy Classroom

"The spacious Astronomy classroom is located on the top-most level of the Astronomy Tower. Accessed via a steep spiral stairway, the classroom is surrounded by crenelated ramparts and iron security railings around the edge of the Tower, where students gaze the skies with their telescopes. Astronomical models and telescopes are propped against the ramparts when the classroom is not in use. There is also a blackboard where the professor will always write with a chalkboard charmed to glow in the dark and there are floating warm-lit lanterns for students to see their writing in the dark. A door leads into a turret and the steep spiral stairway inside leads below.

This class, for 4th Years to the end, will be taught by a Durmstrang Alum named Wolfgang Deadman. An astronomer from Germany, he always wanted to become a teacher but for personal reasons he cannot teach in Durmstrang. He was pretty quiet and hard-to-read, but once you get to know him better he was actually pretty nice outside of class. Still, Deadman isn't a lenient professor, though as long as you listen in class you'll be in his good side constantly.

Thusday. 11:00pm to 11:45pm.

As the students arrived, the first person they see was a tall man with his very dark hair tied in a ponytail, which a pallor that one would assume to be a little bit vampiric in the night time (Of course, Wolfgang would simply deny that). "Evening, students," said Wolfgang, his hands on his back as he straightened up to face the class, looking a bit straightlaced. "Due to the retirement of the former professor, I'll be teaching you from now on. My name is Wolfgang Deadman, I am an Astronomer and I graduated from Durmstrang. That said, please state your name, nickname if you have one, and a short description starting from the first row to last.

                                                        ---

If I recall correctly, last year you have learned about the terrestrial planets- Mercury, Venus, Earth- and our one and only moon... Tonight we will discuss one last terrestrial planet before we could eventually begin learning about the gas giants starting with Jupiter. Now... back to the main topic, please open your telescopes into full view for Mars. And your notes."

"Mars, the Red Planet, never failed to capture the imagination of both muggle and wizarding astronomers, orbiting around it every 687 days and its day was just as nearly as equal as the Earth's. This moon has two moons, Deimos and Phobos, with the latter orbiting much nearer than the former. Mars has an atmosphere, but not as thin as Earth and Venus. Though, several, including some wizarding astronomers I know of, theorized that they can be existing life on Mars due to the existence of their polar ice caps." Wolfgang looked over the class, feeling a bit curious despite his lack of facial expression. He did look, however, like he would give plus points to those who tried. "As for the planet's appearance, that's the reason Mars was named after a Roman War god who is strongly associated with the color red. And that material would be iron oxide. Now for bonus house points, what is the other name for iron oxide, the compound that gives this planet a nickname as the Red Planet?" There was a tiny smirk in Wolfgang's lips, expecting to feel amused about the answer. Because of rust. Rust is kind of red.

                                                        ---

"Moving on the symbolic attributes, particularly in alchemy and astrology, Mars is the ruling planet of Aries and Scorpio. Both constellations are known for being associated with brashness and assertiveness in terms of Western horoscope... as well as Rebirth and Death respectively. As a result, Mars is the symbol of life-and-death cycles: Like in warfare where there is the driving force to give life for new beginnings... by putting the end to the past ones." Given his, er, usual dislike for violence, Wolfgang's frown shows that he didn't like telling youngsters that warfare "will be the only thing to change things". He knows that they understand what he's talking about but still...

"In terms of alchemy, Mars represents physical strength, predominantly male energy, and passion-- living up to the Romans' favorite God of War. In Alchemy studies, Mars often corresponded with Iron, the fourth stage in the process of reaching spiritual gold. And of course, Iron is symbolic of hardness, force, and strength." He then fell silent as he allowed the students to take down notes. "Now, you are free to ask questions, review notes, or observe the planet in more detail. "
