It had been several months since Kohkou had met Kady and they had decided to settle down and become a more permanent item. At first it was.... possibly awkward. Kohkou usually never went anywhere without his one son, Marrik, who had stuck around with him from his first partnership. At the time, the dark stallion had thought that he and the mare would have stayed together but for whatever reason, she had fled when their sons came of age. And his other boy went with them, Marrik choosing to stay behind.
He was grateful for his son. Kohkou had never been one to speak much, in fact, in his early days, not speaking at all. No one was sure if it was from fear or bashfulness or if he simply couldn't, but as time went on he began to muster courage to utter a word or two in passing. But now with Kady.... he felt himself wanting to say more. Much more.... but he struggled. He lacked the words to do it. It was like something was hindering him from actually producing the words and it tore him up inside.
Actions alone had gotten him this far with both his son and now Kady but he didn't want to leave her being the only one able to communicate feelings. He wanted to tell her how much meeting her had changed his world for the better. How much he loved her.
How much he was afraid to lose her.

Not more than a few months ago she'd met this dark stallion, with a son trailing him, at first she'd bene friendly enough, invited him to her small herd for safety and companionship til he decided to move along, or not, during that time she'd fallen for him, quite quickly in fact and she'd been more than happy to let him know. While he hadn't really said it back in the same way she had, he showed it in other ways, She knew words weren't everything, given how timid her father was, though she was always told how much better he was now, than he used to be.
As a filly she'd never been one to believe in love at first sight, she really hadn't but her feelings for this stallion hadn't exactly been subtle, she'd learned a little of his history, about his son, it didn't bother her that he had a mate before, it was just more family to welcome later down the line, though if she met the mare that had abandoned him, first she'd thank her, then kick her backside for hurting Kohkou.
She'd spent more time away from her parents lately, travelling a short distance away with Kohkou, it was nice to spend time alone with him. She didn't much mind the silence between them though it seemed thicker without the chatter of her mother and father around.

The wind had started to get crisp, a bit of a bite to it when it blew, causing the dark stallion to flick his tail a bit as he turned to move closer to Kady. Today Marrik wasn't with them, he had something to do, or so he had said. Kohkou had felt suspicious of this but didn't bother to say or suggest anything. He was grateful to spend some time alone with Kady after all.
Reaching over with his nose, he gently tested to see if it was ok to steal a quick nuzzle. His glowing orange antlers and eyes casting a citrus like glow over her own glowing teal eyes. "Walk?" he said softly, actually very softly to where if she hadn't been so close she may not have even heard it. Something about his voice sounded... rough... of sorts, perhaps from simply being unused throughout his entire foalhood. Something he was working on, though mostly in private. He was shy about it, a big fella like him, who knew?
Pointing with his nose towards a small stream not far away, he glanced at her, his eyes seeming to repeat what he had just asked, this time without words. He was hoping, as they meandered along, he could dig up the courage to finally spit out the words he had been practicing to himself for the past couple of weeks. Three simple words he was dying to tell her, even if she already knew how he felt without them.

The wind gusted and ruffled Kady's hair, she shuddered a little and lifted her head from the grass she'd been nibbling and looked around, eyes glowing softly in the daylight as she scanned the area for anything potentially threatening, she wasn't scared, it was more like a habit she'd grown up doing.
She was a little concerned that Kohkou's son wasn't there, he normally was but at the same time she was grateful for the time alone with her mate, she suspected that was why Marrik had made himself scarce today. He was a good one but it was sometimes a little awkward with him around when the two were trying to enjoy time together as mates.
She snorted gently when Kohkou reached out his nose, she met it with her own before stepping forward and leaning her forehead into his shoulder. "That sounds lovely" she said with a soft smile, Sure he was shy but he showed her in so many ways, how much he cared, including his attempts to overcome his reluctance to talk much. She sighed happily as she walked in step with him towards the stream but then she had a thought, she twitched her tail playfully, nipped at his neck and took off running, teasing him, enticing him into play. "Race ya" she called as she pulled ahead with a laugh.

For a few heartbeats Kohkou didn't move, when Kady realised his hoofbeats didn't immediately follow her she slowed enough to turn her head and see where he was, initially worried that her play n** had startled him too much.
She breathed easier when he called back, laughed the nickered, tossing her head and letting her mane stream out behind her, when she'd first met this stallion, there's no way he'd have joined her in a race like this, he'd come so far in his confidence in himself and around others, she could burst with pride at her beloved mate.
Her father had once joked that Kady had picked him because he was damaged, like himself, she'd replied instantly that neither Kohkou or her father were damaged at all, they just obviously had needed to meet the right mare, Zavis had been apologetic and told her that he loved Kohkou just like another child now, it had taken a lot for him to admit too and she loved her father for it.
She looked back at Kohkou and smiled, a smile that turned to worry when she saw him stumble over his hooves, she instantly skidded to a stop and spun on her heel to race over to him and make sure he wasn't hurt "KOHKOU" she called as she got close "Oh... are you ok? im sorry i made you chase me" she said, her glowing eyes darting all over the stallion in concern, especially around his feet and legs, an injury there could be so bad, some Soquili never ran again.

While he hadn't stumbled completely to the ground, he had been thrown off his groove and for a moment he inwardly cursed himself. Mostly because he was still blushing and he had hoped she hadn't seen him turn red under that dark fur, his head having gone to a place he..... really didn't want to admit out loud.
As she came rushing to check on him, however, he felt embarrassed of a different sort. Like if he had been a foal that had needed his mom to come check on him. Stabilizing himself, he nodded, leaning in to nuzzle her nose gently. "Am fine. Yes." he said, and to prove it he tested out his hooves, making sure to also test his ankles just incase he had rolled one wrong. When they felt fine enough to him, he gave Kady a mischievous sort of grin.
And then a nicker.
And then sprinted off at a full gallop towards the stream again, letting out a horse laugh as he went, his deer like tail flicking a bit like a happy dog. He only slowed as he got nearer the stream, mostly to let her catch up, not that he had really wanted to beat her at the race. The sun coming off the waters reflected off her incoming oranges and deep reds, making it look almost like a living flame was drawing closer to her. And he'd stand there and welcome her, flames or not.

Kady let out a sigh of relief when Kohkou got up and nuzzled her "I was worried, i've seen someone break a foot stumbling like that" she breathed. She'd had her eyes closed as she leaned into the nuzzles and his sudden nicker startled her.
When he just... took off, she let out a snort of surprise, then a whinny of laughter "CHEATER" she yelled at him, having lost more ground to him now, than he had lost when she did the same, her eyes focused on that bobbing tail as he ran, then slowed.
She laughed as she caught up "Good job i love you" she said, a little out of breath, "you big cheater", his antlers glowed like a warm light, making her feel at home whenever she was with him. She stepped past him and bent to take a drink from the stream, less thirsty, more that she'd just realised she'd said the actual words 'i love you' .. she was sure she'd said it before but it was the first time she truly realised what she had said and her face was hot and flushed.

Kohkou laughed again, soft but a laugh. He watched as she drew near, spoke then passed him, neck bend to drink.
For a few moments it took him time to realize and register what she had said and he stared at her, wide eyed. She loved him..... while he didn't doubt it it was something the two hadn't really said much before. Least not with words...and certainly not himself. Also.... it's what he had been wanting to tell her... all day.... he loved her. So much so that it hurt sometimes at the thought that he could lose her one day.
Taking a deep breath, he let it out slowly, stepping forward and, albeit struggling a bit, managed to finally bring words to his own lips. "I Love.... you.... Kay..deee. .... 'fraid..... to lose... you." he finally admitted, his heart racing a million miles a minute and pounding so loud he could hardly hear himself. Had he said it? Had he spat it out? Did it even come out right?
Blinking in nervous anxiety, he stared at her, waiting for her reaction.

As Kady drank, she felt him move forward, her ears tipped back as he spoke, more words in one go than she'd heard him speak before and she froze, her muzzle touching the water but only the sound of dripping was to be heard for a few seconds.
She closed her eyes, scrunching them tight as her heart hammered in her chest, She swallowed hard, the water in her mouth and turned to her mate, the one stallion she'd ever met, that she chose. "You will NEVER lose me Kohkou, i promise" she whisperered, moving close to him and bending her neck over his shoulders, pulling him close. "I love you, you silly Kooky" she said, making up a silly nickname on the spot "I'm not going anywhere, i swear on my soul" she murmured as she held onto him tighter, scared of the thought of anything separating them, she was so grateful he'd finally been able to say the words but it hurt her heart that it was so hard for him to do, hurt FOR him, not for herself.

To say he was relieved was an over statement. When she promised she wasn't going anywhere, he let out a breath he wasn't aware he had been holding. He felt like a foal, like galloping, kicking, bucking, neighing, everything inside him was literally screaming, and yet he stood still. As she bent her neck over him he knew he never wanted to be without her, moreso now than ever. Her embrace was all that he needed to be happy.
Kohkou bent his own neck, returning her embrace, smiling wide, his heart still pounding but now from excitement rather than nerves. "Am glad. Happiest...day." he spoke, his eyes perhaps just a tad bit wet. This was the mare he'd spend his life with, he knew it. He had finally found her...and he was never going to lose her.
