The bell above the door rings cheerfully, slicing through the otherwise silent office like a knife. The room is cozy, professional, and decorated in complimenting shades of rich red, jade, and black, accented by brass. The dim streetlights pour in from a window to the right, swirling with little dust motes kicked up by the outside air which had snuck in through the open door behind you. The onyx oak flooring resonates with a kind of mysterious archival charm like the place has secret back rooms and hosts meetings from societies long forgotten. The smell of parchment, rich leather, old books, and ink saturates every square inch of the space as well as a smokey, mysterious scent that rolls from an elegant fireplace on your right. A large dark, maple wood counter eagerly awaits patrons, massive clawed feet on either side gripping firmly to what look to be scrolls molded from some sort of dark stone. It sits, squatly as if it might suddenly come to life and skitter away should someone startle it.
Approaching, a tiny brass service bell has been set charmingly beside an ornate candelabra, ringing it produces a beautiful, musical note. So lovely, in fact, you just can't help but ring it again, and again, and again. Suddenly, and rather aggressively, a delicate hand snakes up from the other side of the counter and slams the bell down. Stopping the last note abruptly. A meanki glares at you over her spectacles, which have slid down the bride of her nose, and stands upright. One arm clutches a ledger. She releases the bell and fixes her appearance. Obviously, she was in the middle of looking for something when you arrived.
Her agitated expression quickly shifts, as if realizing she has a duty to fulfill, and she smiles.. but it doesn't quite hit the friendly mark.
"Welcome to the Permit Office. How can I help you?" Her voice is smooth, and calming, but with a bite. As if she is exceptionally busy and not eager to engage in small talk.
Without waiting for a reply, she continues. "I assume you're here to file a permit for your... establishment? Very well, hand me the paperwork. You do have the appropriate paperwork, don't you?" One of her well-manicured claws taps impatiently on the counter as she judges you. You didn't realize there was a form. With a sigh, she shakes her head. "I see. The second shelf on your right." She points, her eyes never leaving your face. "Make sure you fill out everything correctly. Don't leave any blank spaces. Please don't make me reject your proposal. Let's not waste more time, hmm?" The last note she says with a smile, closing her eyes for emphasis as her long tail swishes side to side agitatedly across the hardwood.
