FAMILY REUNION

No more secrets. So they said. Hopefully, that statement would indeed ring true as time moved on, but that would remain to be seen.

Kalen sat and listened as his sister regaled about the battle, and all the details of the man that was his biological father. The power. The strength. The tenacity. It all felt surreal and unreal to Kalen, who could only sit there in stunned silence, asking very vague questions about what all had occurred.

They took a break, having Rem help get a meal for the two of them as they continued their conversation, only stopping to eat the modest meal of meat and cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. Not that Kalen minded. He loved tomato soup, even canned. Things started to feel normal again, all things considered, though it did lead to Kalen posing a question.

"Rem...do you think I can get that strong?"

The question was large, and Rem could feel her own brother's insecurity, but the pondering of that question would be cut short as Nona Nipal entered the room, the door creaking open and both turning to attention as the President came to see her eldest boy awake and well enough. "Hey ma..." His voice was quiet, though as always he forced a small smile on to put her at ease to let her know that, indeed, he was okay. "I'm...awake. Can't move my legs yet but doctors said it'd resolve itself within a week..." Awake. Tired. Confused. He sighed as he finished the soup, placing it on the beside table before looking at Rem carefully. "It's bad out there, isn't it....are you okay...is...everyone? Them?"

Salem's standing ovation and applause had Ny grinning like the cat that got the cream, pleased that he enjoyed the performance. It was one of those rare happy moments that she knew would stay with her, safe in her memories, until she was old and grey(er).

The girl promptly sat back down on the riverbank, drawing her knees up to her chest and wrapping her arms around them as she waited for her uncle to start playing. But first he addressed her comments about Kalen, and she stared at him. His disapproval of the idea surprised her. And now she was in a tough spot. Go against her uncle's advice, or let Riyel and Kalen down? Ny was torn. He has a valid point...but what if Kal gets hurt again? I'd feel awful if I didn't give him a better chance at defending himself... She contemplated seriously, as Salem began to play. Maybe it's best for Kalen to decide?

The sound of Salem's seemingly random notes confused her for a moment until she realised he was showing off his masterful technical skills and playing by ear. Ny listened raptly, impressed by his skill, as she always was. Though she had to stop herself from laughing at his beaming expression. It wasn't one she was used to seeing on her usually enigmatic and poised uncle. The music washed over her, soothing her spirit like a pleasant wave until Salem finished, and then Ny applauded enthusiastically. "Bravo, uncle" She commented brightly. "Ahh, if only I had mine here too. We could have done a duet! Another time perhaps?"

A buzzing in her pocket caught her attention.

[ Also if you see Salem tell him he can't escape from me forever - love M xx ]

The text from Lis made the corners of her mouth curve into an amused smile.

Ny stood up, straightening her uniform. "Thanks for talking, uncle Salem" She reached around his waist to give him a quick, shy hug, then stepped back. "I know mother has been relying on you a lot more since...well..." The split. "And with everything happening to Raeka, and Auntie Aeli, and all this political drama, if I can help ease your burdens just let me know. I'm around. Impromptu musical performances included. I'm old enough to drink too, so there's always that"

She met his teal eyes and gave a little salute to add some levity to the sentimental words. Mushy-ness was not her strong suit. But she hoped her intentions came across: they were family, and Salem should be able to rely on them as much as they all depended on him.

Ny looked out across the water and her tone became more serious at her next words.

"I also realise I don't know a lot of what is going on behind the scenes, but it's clear to me that tensions are escalating. And Xaris told me that Adel escaped from Esthar. Do you think that we are...at risk? Our kind, I mean" He would know she meant sorcerers/sorceresses, of course. It was an ever present worry, in a world that distrusted them.

President Nona Nipal nee Winchester

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Status: Mending

Rem sat in the chair once more, returning Kalen’s look. They were in this together. Something she needed as much as him.

”...Yeah, it is,” Nona Nipal met vulnerability with truth. Platitudes would do none of them any good. ”Too many people are gone. More wounded.” Curative magic could help, but as Kalen could attest, it didn’t replace time and healing.

”Shae is gone,” she recounted. Nona’s long-time aide, a face both of the kids knew. Gone. ”Captain LeMarque. Hanamaru. The Wittings got caught by the ruby dragon.” Name after name, face after face. Friends of the family, officials frequently around Nona…Too many. The only thing like good news was that none of their siblings were counted among the fallen. She left off before the weight of it all could crush the Nipals.

”Mae is having a hard time. You know how sensitive she is.” Nona had always worried about the girl pursuing white magicks and medicine- she was so soft-hearted. But that softness was exactly what drove the girl to help others.

And of course, them. Nona’s one eye fell on Kalen. He might’ve been worried what he’d find there…but all he saw was concern for him.

”They’re fine. She’s better than I’ve seen her in…a long time,” Nona didn’t like talking about Koyuki Vicaria. ”And him…” Somehow, in the midst of the madness, a flicker of warmth came to Nona Nipal’s face. ”He’s just like he used to be. Better, too, I think.” Dissonance crackled in Nona’s mind. She remembered the terrible loss of a friend. And she saw him step back into the world, grown up, like he’d never been gone.

Both of them noticed the question she’d avoided. All Kalen had to do was fix his mother with a look and wait.

”Fine, fine,” she waved off the expectant stare, letting more of the exhaustion creep into her voice.

”I’m doing my best, Kal. I was lucky enough not to get hurt.” She rested a hand on one of his pin-and-needle knees in empathy. ”Feels like…like I’m trying to hold the whole world together.” Her eyes sank shut under the quiet weight of it all. In a world where so many people cared only about their grievances, grudges, and greed, she tried to hold up a torch. To show them a better way.

Kiss me good-bye, love's memory

FAMILY REUNION

. So many people had been lost. So many with history, Kalen grew up remembering through all of his life. Each name felt like another weight being added to his chest, his eyes closing as their faces flashed into his psyche only to fade away. Damn it. Slowly, his hands opened and blue eyes could only gaze fervently at the grooves in his palms. It made no sense. Why did all of these things have to happen one after the other? The thought was permeating loudly over the last few days in his brain but still no answer would come. All the work that these people had done to try and build a better tomorrow were ultimately fruitless. Gone. Dust in the wind. A speck in the hourglass of time that took them all slowly.

”You need to rest, mom.”. His voice was quiet, looking up at her with an expression of vulnerability, ”I know you’re the president. But you, Rem, and Mae would do no one good if you fainted out of exhaustion. Is there anything I can do to help?”. It felt like an empty gesture, Nona’s hand resting on his unresponsive leg only emphasizing that the young celebrity novelist was immobile and immaterial at this current juncture of the recovery. He did not feel the need to follow up on her explanation on Koyuki and Riyel Vicaria’s status, nor did he want her to feel like he called her just for that. Nona was his mother, through and through and he wanted to see her as much as anyone. He’d only just woken up after all, and the news on the tv did nothing but feed the anxiety he felt building time and time again.

The world would keep on turning and he would find his own answers eventually. Right now, his hand grasped his mother’s in solidarity, a gentle squeeze as she expanded upon her own feelings. ”This isn’t your fault. I hope you know that. Nothing about these events is on your shoulders. If anything, it feels more orchestrated than anything…it’s the perfect time for all the good people in the world to come together. Someone caused this. It’s…too coincidental for me to think it an act of circumstance. Rem and I, everyone…we want to help. Once I’m out of bed, I’m going to…get stronger. I’ve got to be like…him.”. Rem’s recanting painted a vivid picture that the television supplemented easily. Riyel Vicaria’s power was palpable even on the dingy screen, and it only enmbued his mystery even further. ”Rem and I needed to talk to you about something too…and it might help bring the world a bit closer together…just promise you’ll sit and listen, and not go loco on us?”

President Nona Nipal nee Winchester

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Status: Mending

Nona Nipal did much to hide her troubles from her children. However, she’d never believed in lying to them. Kal’s concern brought a weary smile to her, and she squeezed his hand back.

”You’re right. I’ll get some sleep tonight,” she promised. ”The worst of the fires are out for now.” There was always the demand for more, more, more! But like Kalen said, she’d be no good to anyone if she let it suck the life out of her.

”I agree,” she said in a quiet voice at the mention of orchestration. Too many disasters, too perfectly timed. This was a coordinated attempt to destroy their home, whether that was the end or the means to something greater still. She kept her own counsel on the matter of ”him.” But the mention of the real reason she’d been called here got her to straighten up. She frowned at her eldest children, in that concerned motherly sort of way she did. Her lips tightened with Kalen’s phrasing…but she took a mindful breath, let them see it, and nodded. They were adults. And they knew her. Yes, she could be sharp, and reactionary. If it was important for her to keep her cool, she’d school herself.

”I promise. You can tell me anything. Both of you.” She looked Kalen and Rem each in the eye before waiting.

And then, it was all up to Rem. It wasn’t Kalen’s place to reveal something like this. Nona sensed as much when Kal turned his gaze on Rem and his sister likewise had trouble meeting either of their eyes.

”Mom,” Rem managed at last, in a small voice, with her folded hands fidgeting in her lap. ”I’ve been…h-hiding something. For a…long time. I-It’s…” She faltered. Mouth full of cotton. Stomach full of snakes. Kalen could see the panic starting to build again. She began and aborted half a dozen sentences. Only when Kalen reached down and put his hand on hers did she manage to look back up. Only then did she nod and, visibly steeling herself, rise to stand. She squeezed Kalen’s hand, holding onto it as she turned ‘round.

Oh gosh, she was going to-

Flash!

In the same scintillating burst of warmth and light, the incarnadine wings emerged from her back!

Nona’s hand went slack in Kalen’s. The boy saw his mother stunned. She stared with her good eye at her daughter, who began to tremble worse and worse the longer the silence dragged on. Both of them were struggling. Again, it was up to Kal to help. Whether he touched her hand again, or spoke to her, or something else- some signal from him snapped Nona Nipal back into the moment. Rem was just about to crumble when Nona stood up and wrapped her arms around the girl’s waist.

”Oh, Rem…”

The hug was the spark. Her wings vanished in a burst of coruscating glimmers, and Rem all but collapsed into her mother’s arms. They sank onto the bed, holding onto one another.

”I-I’m sorry, mama! I didn’t want to hide it- I was s-scared!” Rem babbled, trying to rush out all the defenses she’d gone through with Kalen. ”Y-You built our home to fight Suh-Sorceresses…! I couldn’t-”

Nona squeezed her tighter. The excuses dried up. Rem clinged to her mother like a child.

”How long have you known?” Nona murmured, her own voice shaky.

Rem sniffled and shrank. ”S…Since the malboro…” she confessed.

”Oh, baby…You’ve been scared all these years?”

Rem squirmed.

Nona kissed the crown of the princess’ head. She took Rem’s chin, urging her to look up at her mother.

”I never built Unita to fight Sorceresses, Rem,” Nona told her daughter. ”I built it to fight monsters. Anyone can use their strength to abuse others. Doesn’t matter if they’re a Sorceress, a SeeD, or a politician.”

Rem blinked up at Nona. Fractured hope warred with the fear in which she still wallowed. ”You don’t…hate them?”

Nona’s expression tightened. Perhaps…that wasn’t the truest thing in the world. But it also wasn’t true all in itself.

”I’ve…hated Sorceresses,” she said, picking her way through her words like a soldier picking her way through a minefield. ”People. For things they’ve done. Not for what they were, or are.”

”You’re you, Remington,” she said, cupping the girl’s cheek in her hand. ”My first daughter, my princess, my light. How could I ever hate you for being born the way you are?”

The tears came, then. Remington Nipal shattered all over again. But this time, she did so in the arms of her mother, and soon her brother.

A while later, tempestuous feelings had calmed, for the most part. Nona had done much soothing; not just for Rem, but for her wounded son who was supporting his sister when his legs couldn’t even support his body weight.

”I’m proud of you, Kal,” Nona told him, sitting next to him on the bed while Rem rested her head in Nona’s lap, seated back in the chair pulled up against the bedside. She stroked the girl’s hair while she gave Kalen the kind of tender smile that the people of the world scarcely knew Nona Nipal could make. ”I want to slap you upside the head and say you were an idiot…but you were brave.” He’d been telling her, with some more difficulty, what he’d told Rem. His troubled feelings about the conflict, his actions, his transformation…and his strength.

”If you hadn’t been there to stand in her way, she’d have wiped out who knows how many sectors of the city before anyone could get there to stop her.” Nona Nipal did not praise people lightly. She spoke with the intent of a queen- that every word was weighed, measured, and true. ”You went up alone against an enemy you knew you couldn’t beat. I’m sorry you had to…but I’m glad to see the man you’ve become.”

Reminded her of a certain someone.

”And actually…I did have a way you could help, even while you recover,” she explained. ”I’ve read your writing. You capture beauty even in the hard places.” Like Trabia. ”Do you think you could put something together to share with the city? Something to give them hope.”

"Depending on whether we can get the comms repaired, we might even be able to reach most of the world."

"A duet would be lovely. We can have one in a few days, when we go home." Nevermind it could spiral into a quartet with Etamara and Remington. As she saluteded, he smiled. "At ease." Though the smile faded as she spoke of real business. The dangers she would have to face and knew little of.

Salem closed his eyes and sighed. He would be honest. "Yes, we are in danger. To one such as Adel, we are both predator and prey. We are the only reasonable thing that could challenge her, but also defeating us she can grow more powerful. With Rae losing his sorcery, I need to make sure the rest of you are able to fight at full capacity. If she arrives, Lisanna and I will face the brunt of it, but know individually Adel is likely more powerful than me or your mother. I.. may even need to bring in your father for this."

Not that he wanted to, but desperate times called for desperate measures. "I need to track down Marianna as well. Adels return may also damage the roads I've laid for sorceress rights. Together we can win, but I want us all prepared. And that's not even getting into Galbadia..."

Ny was grateful for her uncle's honesty, yet his words still filled her with fear.

She listened carefully as he explained the danger Adel posed, and when he was done she hugged herself, trying to stop her body from shaking. The prospect that their whole family could be extinguished suddenly seemed very real. And if they weren't, she realised that the rest of the world could turn against them easily. It was as she expected, but hearing Salem say it out loud made it all the more real and terrifying.

"I understand..." She said quietly, still looking off towards the river, her expression anxious. She took a deep breath. "I don't want anything to happen to you, or mother. I would rather go out with you all than be left behind. Don't leave me behind, please, uncle" More than anything, she couldn't stand the thought of losing all her family, and being alone.

At the mention of Galbadia she shot him a sharp glance, eyes narrowing. While he was being honest with her, she may as well push for more information.

"Do you know what their aims are?" She questioned cautiously, half expecting him to put a stop to the conversation there and then. "Were they behind the attack on Raeka? Did they have a hand in this mess with Koyuki?" Nyale thought it unlikely he would share his knowledge with her, but she would try anyway. Any opportunity speak frankly with Salem was a chance to learn more, in her opinion. The shadowy world of global politics in which he moved intrigued her. "President Breowitz...he scares me" She admitted. "Was he head of B.I.E. back then? When they tried to take me?" She had never spoken to Salem about that night. Lisanna had warned her against it.

"I wanted to ask Koyuki earlier why she surrendered herself to Galbadia, but there wasn't time" She added thoughtfully, her tone disappointed. She'd had so many questions about Riyel's appearance too that she figured would never be answered. It was all so strange, yet she was trying to make the connections with what minimal knowledge she had.

"Anyway, I hope you manage to track Marianna down. It would be good to know she's alright-"

The phone buzzed for her attention. "Ah. Mother is busy, looks like something came up, of course" Ny muttered, reading the text.

                                          Probably for the best

She would head back to hotel anyway after this. It had been a weird day.

Nyale wanted to be treated as an adult, so when she held herself in fear, he silently watched her. It rent his heart to do so, but he would have to face worse possibilities in the future. Hearing her beg not to be left behind, he folded. He knelt to one knee and took her hand.

"I won't, if I can help it. It's why I'm gathering you, Etamara and Rem to train all of you. I want you as prepared as you can be so when the time comes, we fight together. Adel and Ultimecia's biggest weaknesses was their independence, and fighting alone without any true allies. Together, we will be unstoppable." Never mind he didn't expect the adults to make it out of it. Not right now. Sacrifices would need to be made to protect the children, and even with Kalays shielding based sorcery, he expected the event to be over whelming.

Salem looked away as she asked about Galbadia. He knew he brought it up, of course there would be follow up. "Some of this is confidential, if it gets out I may have a lot to deal with from the Galbadian Government." He let a moment of silence carry. If she wasn't ready, she had the chance to stop him. But knowing what he knew... carried risks.

Salem reached into his jacket pocket, letting go of Nyale's hand as he did so. If Nyale cared to investigate, she may see there was some sort of device he was activating. "He was. Same as when he had aunt Aelianna shoot me. From what I can surmise Ny, they hurt Raeka to leverage helping him to secure my allegiance. Xaris sacrificed her abilities and Guardian Force to heal Raeka... She thwarted whatever scheme it was they had..." His thoughts seemed to drift off discussing his son.

"They definitely had a hand with Koyuki, but I think it was something they did in error. At any rate, I need you to do something for me. This involves whatever Galbadia is up to, but I haven't figured it out yet. I do not know how, but they've found a way to replicate part of Ultimecia's space time magic. Worse, I believe that's what Remington originally inherited. If you see her acting strange, you may need to put her down. Make sure she loses her sorcery, and if you can, bring her back like you did Koyuki. No one else knows this."

Salems eyes turned cold as he stood again, looking down at his niece. "If anyone learns this without my explicit permission, I will remove them from the board one way or another. You are in my world now, Ny, my game. When we are done with this Adel and Galbadian situation, you may choose if you wish to stay in it."

As Salem knelt and took her hand, Ny felt her rapidly beating heart begin to calm down, reassured by her uncle's acknowledgement that he would not leave her alone. She dipped her head in a nod, though now she wasn't sure she fully believed that all of them together could stop Adel. We will just have to try... She thought, still reeling from the idea that all her family might be killed.

At his next words the young Sorceress merely watched him intently and let her silence be the answer. She understood that his delay was a chance for her to back out of her questioning, but she would not. She was keen to know more, whatever the repercussions, and she was glad that he hadn't simply shut her down and refused to elaborate. He was treating her like an adult, and an equal, which she was grateful for. So she waited until he continued, her gaze momentarily drawn to the strange device he pulled out of his pocket.

His explanation of the shooting caused her breath to catch in her chest, and her features creased into a frown as she took in this new information. "Xaris did that? I was wrong about her then...why would she do such a thing?" She muttered, surprised by this revelation. She tried to think back to what Xaris had told her on the night of their fight. 'You will see why things happened'...that's what she said... Ny recalled. At the time, she had been frustrated that the woman didn't explain more.

When Salem proceeded to inform her of his suspicions of Galbadia and made his next request Nyale's eyes widened. "Put her down...?!" She repeated in a whisper, horrified by the thought. It was a brutal way to describe such an act, but hardly surprising coming from him.

She's my friend...! And I'm hardly an assassin-

Ny stopped herself to really consider what he was saying, and the seriousness of it. It was a lot to ask.

Salem would never request such a thing of me if it wasn't completely vital

He had trusted her with this information, so she would have to trust him in return.

She closed her eyes for a moment, and when she opened them there was an uncharacteristic glint of resolve in her gaze, albeit a reluctant one. "I...I could do it, if necessary" She said slowly. She still had the gun gifted to her by Yuki, so in the event of any aforementioned strangeness she could do it the exact same way it happened to Rae, God willing.

It would be a betrayal of our friendship, but if it stops something worse then I will need to put aside my own feelings... She lamented internally. And of course resurrecting Rem went without saying. If she could. The notion that Galbadia had found a way to do space time magic was particularly horrifying. One other thing bothered her, too. "If I cause a succession, her Sorceress abilities will simply pass onto someone else, right?"

Her eyes followed Salem as he stood up, his own expression suddenly cold. His threat made her shiver, and she was reminded that the man was absolutely ruthless when necessary. "I understand, Sir" She replied steadily. "I-I won't repeat any of this to anyone, I swear" Ny believed that her uncle truly would follow through on his words. "I don't intend to endanger anyone else with this information...I'm aware of the gravity of it. Nor would I want to break your confidence, uncle"

To his final comment about staying in his game, she looked off to the side. She had drawn herself into this by asking questions, she knew, and Salem had allowed it. It was the precipice of something new, and dangerous.

"Well, let's see if I survive Adel and Galbadia first. So far Breowitz has had at least 2 members of our family shot, if we're keeping count" She crossed her arms, letting a small sigh escape her lips.

"What is that, by the way?" Ny queried, indicating the device he had activated earlier.

Why would Xaris do such a thing. He needed to follow up on that. "She considers herself extended family. It's most likely that if she was the culprit, she did it because someone else may have gotten it wrong and killed Raeka. Why did she heal him... I don't know. Guilt, maybe. She's seemed to turn her back on Galbadia, so it may be more than that. Or simply, because hurting Raeka hurt her daughter. And she couldn't let that stand."

"Yes, a succession will have her pass on her sorceress abilities. It may just go to the closest sorceress, or it may go to a pre-ordained choice. I've never seen one, and studying them is near impossoble. You may have a chance to learn more on this than I." Not that he wanted her too. But it was a cold fact that if she witnessed another succession, she could study it.

He brow furrowed a tad when she said, 'Let's see if I survive'. No young lady, you will survive. It was most of his purpose here. To protect the next generation of sorceresses. But he simply moved on.

Salem smiled and brought up a finger. "Shot. So far, it has been by women who care about us, so maybe consider dating a Galbadian. It's worked out pretty well so far." Yes, it seemed history had a way of repeating itself. The boys were breaking even due to galbadian girls.

"As for this... in short terms, it's a jammer. Makes it very hard to record what I say and conversations in close vicinity to me." Then with the flick of a finger, he magically lifted his violin case back in hand. "Enough about business, let's go get some lunch."

"Mmm...that makes sense. She did also vow to protect me, if you believe that. Seems that she may be more of an ally than I would ever have expected" Ny replied to Salem's comments about Xaris, looking past him as if deep in thought.

"And I saw your son's succession" She added in a quiet voice. "I can tell you exactly what happened sometime, if it's of use to you. I have no wish to see another..." If she caused Rem's succession and her powers went to Ny by virtue of proximity...it was hard to stomach that prospect.

I'm not sure that magic would be any safer with me... The girl also thought, though she refrained from saying the words out loud. The thought of becoming more powerful was appealing, but the increased risk of losing her humanity was not. A fine line to walk.

As he spoke about dating she visibly cringed and looked away. Was there anything more awkward than talking about dating with a parental figure?

"I-I've never dated anyone, uncle Salem, and I'm not planning to. It's too much trouble" She stammered, embarassed. "And not many sane people want to date a sorceress, anyway. Our lives are a bit more complicated than most..." She tailed off, staring at the ground. "Still though, for you and Rae, you're privileged to have experienced real love, I think" Even with a little attempted murder on the side, from Auntie Aeli.

She looked back across with interest at the device as Salem explained what it was. The jammer. "Ohh that's so useful" She noted, intrigued. The need for the jammer then caused her to look around a little nervously, as if expecting to see someone suspicious lurking nearby trying to record them. A gentle but ominous reminder that anyone could be keeping tabs on her, at any point. The thought suddenly occurred to her that if Galbadia had tried and failed to use Rae as leverage, she and her mother could also be targets.

"I never thought I'd say this, but the sooner we're back in Winhill the better" She remarked, shivering again.

It seemed her uncle wanted an end to the conversation, which was for the best as Ny could easily have stood there and asked him questions all day. She nodded in agreement, her expression brightening.

                                          "Lunch sounds great!"
