should we move on to counting days of the month(tsuitachi, futsuka ect.) or the various types of counting like people (hitori, futari ect.) or should that be saved for another lesson?

Counting books uses "satsu."

I'satsu
Nisatsu
Sansatsu
Yonsatsu
Gosatsu
Rokusatsu
Nanasatsu
Ha'satsu
Kyusatsu
Ju'satsu

Counting thin wafers/sheets (dishes, money, nori) uses "mai."

Ichimai
Nimai
Sanmai
Yonmai
Gomai
Rokumai
Shichimai / Nanamai (I've heard both used)
Hachimai
Kyumai
Jumai

Counting long but proportionally slender items (pencils, poles, bottles of beer) uses "hon."

I'pon
Nihon
Sanpon
Yonhon
Gohon
Ro'pon
Nanahon
Ha'pon
Kyuhon
Ju'pon

Counting items can either be "ko" or "tsu." Er...I don't actually know the rule about when to use which. ^^; ('ko' is small)

I'ko
Niko
Sanko
Yonko
Goko
Ro'ko
Nanako
Ha'ko
Kyoko
Ju'ko

Hitotsu
Futatsu
Mi'tsu
Yo'tsu
Itsutsu (don't ask @_@)
Ro'tsu
Nanatsu
Ha'tsu
Kokonotsu (I think...I honestly can't recall)
...and dammit I can't remember what ten is. XD

Animals are "hiki."

I'piki

Yonpiki
Gohiki
Ro'piki
Nanahiki
Ha'piki
Kyuhiki
Ju'piki

the numbers that usually change the counters are 3,6,8, and 10, especially with counters that start with 'h', like hyaku. Three usually changes it to 'b' and the rest usually changes it to 'p' or 'pp'.

3 in the 'hon' counter should be sanbon.
9 in the 'ko' counter should be kyuko.
4 in the 'tsu' counter should be just yotsu, not yottsu.
Likewise, 6 should be muttsu, and 8 should be yattsu
10 in the 'tsu' counter doesn't use 'tsu' at all. simple 'too' using 'o' not 'u' (i.e. とお for those with Japanese Text Support).

The 'tsu' counting system is based on the traditional Japanese counting system that they had before Chinese influence was introduced onto the language. If I'm not mistaken (and I might be), the ichi, ni, san... system was introduced when Chinese Kanji were introduced to Japan....This is the same reason why the first ten days of the month (minus the first) use the same counting system.
