I go straight toward building the mansions...the largest I've ever built was 6/7 stroies tall...1 or 2 sub-levels...

I sometimes use the houses that come with the games if I just want to hurry and get a family moved in. Otherwise I use my imagination. I'm usually really proud of how my houses turn out...

I love making houses! I love making pretty houses with hardly any technology and very old fashioned looking with a little pond and many floors. And cute red and white windows and a pretty roof.

Edit: I have too much on my mind to build houses lately. But I've been having fun furnishing them.

My houses are sadly usually devoid of character as I tend to just build what is needed for the Sims living there.

I did recently create four very nice looking homes for a contest on MTS though.
