I think the main reason why these shortcuts are being used is to be able to say what you want to say much more quickly. I don't do this, but I can understand why someone would want to put "g2g" instead of "I have to go." It's quicker. When it comes to roleplaying, however, I think that a person should be literate and type out everything. You get a better understanding of both the character, and what they're doing, where they are, etc.
I used to use shortcuts, but I found that with practice, I could be literate and type even faster than most of the people that use the shortcuts like "ttyl" or "b/c." Now that I'm used to it, it would be pointless to go back to, "hi lol wut^." For me, it just wouldn't feel right...
