A friend of mine had a robe made and wants to put runes on it for protection.

I'm only familiar with the Elder Futhark and the divination meanings, for which Eihwaz and Algiz would serve the purpose.

Is there another rune system that should be used? I'm not big into runes, and he's Mormon (and is pretty much going against his religion by doing this), so...yeah. He doesn't exactly have a lot at his disposal.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Well, you've got the Ogham from the Celtic also. Egyptian heiroglyphics might work as well. Take a look into ceremonial magic, I think they have a wealth of symbols there as well. Research specific deities, and then try to find runes or symbols associated with them.

Cerimonial Magicians have a whole list of symbols hust for robes, in particular. I think you're dead on with that.

Look into celestial script, as well. It's a nice, nondenominational script, in that it was devised through astrology, but is associated with angels, hence the name. Malachim is a magical alphabet I use, derived from celestial. It was used by the Judaic magi, originally. There's also Passing the River, which was a magical language used by many clergymen in the middle ages, when bishops kept grimoires and whatnot.

Names of some magical languages: Celestial, Malachim, Runic, Passing the River, Theban, Ogham.

Also, Cerimonial magic has symbols you could use.

Depends on what type of protection he needs, Cyystals, runes and other symbols are usually used to protect from certain things. =P

Unfortunately, no. For stuff like that I rely only on books, and I usually crosscheck my references pretty thoroughly. Look for a book called 'Signs, symbols, and omens.' It has a whole chapter devoted to magical languages.

There's nothing in my area that offers anything close to that.

Try looking up our suggestions on Wikipedia, then checking their reference sites. That might help.

You have to be careful when working with Germanic runes, as the runic dialects often get mixed up, even by reputable sources.

Anglo-Saxon, , Manx, and Nordic, are just a few of many that all look very similar, but bear slight differences.

Hm...protection runes...off the top of my head:

Eihwaz
Algiz
Hagal
Thurisaz

Those should be helpful...you can even combine all four into a bindrune.

I heart runes...got a new set recently made of Citrine.
