You can also do stockinette or garter Heel Stitch. For stockinette, it goes like this:
Stockinette-based Heel Stitch (even # of sts)
Row 1 (RS): *Slip 1, Knit 1; Repeat to end Row 2 (WS): purl
Garter-based Heel Stitch (also even # of sts)
Row 1 (RS): *Slip 1, Knit 1; Repeat to end Row 2 (WS): knit
Both of these stitches make individually shorter, denser rows, so that it takes more of them than it does of regular stockinette to make the same length of fabric. They're thicker and way more durable, and you can reinforce them further with reingforcing yarn or by using two strands of your sock yarn. The garter-based version draws in more (just like regular garter stitch), so makes an even thicker heel. I also like to use this stitch on the toes of my socks, since mine tend to wear out on the balls of my feet first.
Another thing to think of is calluses. Anywhere you have calluses on your feet, your socks are going to get a lot of wear and tear, so you should reinforce them there as well, or get good at darning!
