"A lot" is the correct spelling. There's always a space in between.

"Allot" is wrong as it would be "all ot" or "al lot" which sound a little strange to me! As for "alot" I'm pretty sure that this is a different word(?).

And yes, the Enlglish language is really fu***d up.

"A lot" is indeed the correct spelling. Don't feel badly though. I used "alot" for years before I found out how wrong I was.


This is a properly formatted sentence. The first letter of a sentence is ALWAYS capitalized. A sentence always ends in a punctuation mark, usually a period, but sometimes a question mark or exclamation point. Punctuation such as the comma, the colon and the semicolon are used as sentence pausers. Never should a sentence end with one of these.

I would choose a lot. (My teacher stresses it so much it's annoying. xp ) I think that it's pretty hard to get "a lot" confused if you look at the context. Then again, context can be pretty twisted. sweatdrop

Actually, if you want to get technical [and I'm sure you do, this being a grammar guild and all], don't even use "a lot" unless you're actually talking about a real lot, e.g. a [parking] lot of cars, or a lot of stereos [in the shipment sense?]

Whatever. It is thence that "a lot" has come to mean "a great deal".

"allot" is a verb.

"alot" is nothing.
