Experiment on Tektek to see what items look good together. Don't even try making an outfit until you have something to start with, and start with the main focus. Make use of the "hide" feature on Tektek as well, it makes going back and building an outfit much easier once you have all the things that match.  

[Authenticity]

black and red is overdone, and most commonly used.
even if you have an amazing avatar using black and red, it has probably been done many many times.

when making an avi with gold, the gold pocket watch is a definite win.
as well as a few of those egyptian gold trinkets.
but, when wearing the gold bracelets or whatever, don't use both of the bracelets and both of the anklets and stuff, one will do just fine.

i personally love any of the superstar shades.
they match surprisingly well if ever wanting to do a blue, yellow, or redish-pink avi.

Try using colors you haven't seen used all that much - or color combinations. The challenge is refreshing.

If you DO make a red-and-black avatar, you damn well better make sure you're using some specific item combos that you've never seen anyone else use before.
