Help with hats?

Hi hi,

I need to make two of these hats by hand:

Only in black, mind you.

It looks easy enough to do, but I could use a few tips. For the top bit, how much should I measure? Obviously for the band around, I need to do head measurements, but for the top?

Also, is there any pattern, free or very very cheap (I'm on a tight budget) that I should follow, or should I just go ahead and make my own?

The top portion of the hat reminds me alot of what we call in history circles a snood. Snood example

To make a snood, we simple trace a large circle on the fabric (for you, at least 8 inches bigger around than the band will be- remember- you can alwasy make this smaller, but you cant add fabric here). Cut it out, use simple neddle and thread to draw in the bottom so it matches the size of the band, then sew to the band.

As for the brim, I have no clue.

How do you keep the brim stiff?

I put two pieces of cardboard in between! Works like a charm 3nodding .
