Theres similar concepts in other mediums, but they're called different things. In knitting, the blocks that you put together to make something bigger (which is basically what a granny square is, right?) are generally called "Motifs", in sewing its a quilt block.

crochet hooks tend to turn better corners than knitting needles
(not saying you can't make center out squares in knitting - you can. It just requires some funky work with DPNs and a good handle on lace. In Crochet it's easy.)
