Why do we limit granny squares to crochet? Why not allow other crafts, such as knitting, to make them, also?

Unfortunately, granny square is a style of stitching that can only be done by crochet. (you can't excaclt pass slipped stitch over in crochet)

Theres similar concepts in other mediums, but they're called different things. In knitting, the blocks that you put together to make something bigger (which is basically what a granny square is, right?) are generally called "Motifs", in sewing its a quilt block.

crochet hooks tend to turn better corners than knitting needles

(not saying you can't make center out squares in knitting - you can. It just requires some funky work with DPNs and a good handle on lace. In Crochet it's easy.)
