I have been crocheting forever but, I can't seem to figure out a good way to put together granny squares.I tried crocheting them together with a single stitch but, didn't like the ridge it made. Does anyone know of a better way to put them together?

I have a book of different granny squares that has information about different ways of joining them. It says you can sew them together with an overcast or whip stitch, you can weave them together, or you can crochet them together which the book says is the bulkiest method. I'm sure there are a few more ways to join squares, you might want to do a search. If you can find a book on squares in your library it will have information on joining them.
I prefer sewing them together through the outer loops with either whip or a 'back and forth' stitch, but it takes a very long time.
Doing a chain - stitch join creates a flater joint than regular single crochet, and it goes something like this:
lay the 2 squares side by side. slip-stitch into the first edge stitch on square 1 chain 1 slip-stitch into the first edge stitch on square 2 chain 1 slip stitch into the second edge stitch in square 1
and so on....
hope that helps!
