Granted, the Kar is mostly just a Gewehr with the kinks worked out. But still.
I'm looking for a Kar, and not really sure what I want. With or without waffenamps, or what not.

The 98k is quite a bit better then the Gew98.
As for Waffenamts, it's only if you want to be showy about it. Most of mine were filed off by Jews. rofl I mean Israelis. But then I don't have a factory Mauser or a capture, just a rebuilt one. My numbers do not match.
It's all good. neutral

Well, in all respects, I like the Gew 98 more, but it's much more expensive. I think I'll get a K98.

i find it funny that the crap version of guns are often more expensive than the better ones...
I found some dubious but fairly even handed facts about the differences between the two types.
What I didn't realize was the reason for the glut of the 98K variants. Beyond the reduced weight and barrel length (in the K98a), the post WWI restrictions of rifle production prevented the 'legal' production of the Gew 98.
Anyway, just keep your eyes open. I would love to find a Swedish built 98 in the right caliber. The post WWII FN built 98 I owned was a bit too heavy for lugging on a hunt.

what the GEW 98 has that the KAR 98 fixed are as follows.
Gew 98 has a straght bolt, Kar 98 has a bent bolt. Gew 98 has a strange rear sight, Kar has a newer sight. Gew 98 was longer, and used a bayonet with a barrel band, the Kar is shorter and uses a bayonet that just fits on the bayonet mount, few need barrel bands.
