A simple thought ranged through Khepri's mind where she lay on her side in the cool den.
"It's time."
The thought ran through her mind lazily as the pain hit in her stomach. It was worse than anything she'd felt before, more painful, tearing, ripping, clenching. All of the pains she'd ever felt in her life forced through her mind and Khepri sat up instantly.
Her cubs were coming and she knew that they were coming fast. Her stomach was more distended than it had been in the past, more painful than it hadd been before.
Slowly, slowly she rose to her feet and flattened her ears to her head. Standing seemed to ease the pain a little. However as she stood and moved away from Kota's warmth she felt as if she'd lost something. Felt empty.
Turning to walk around the cave a few paces, Khepri felt a moan escape from her muzzle before she could staunch it. The pain in her belly flashed stronger and she slowly came to a stop at the back of the cave.

The dark male didn't move at first. Pregnancy apparantly made females fidgety in the night and 'Kota was used to his mate moving every so often, although she woke him his dreams were not exactly interrupted.
It wasn't until she groaned that his eyes flashed open and without a moments hesitation he was on his paws, eyes wide, ears perked forwards completely on the alert. "Whats wrong lass?" He managed looking at the clearly irritated female. He wasn't sure whether he should move to her or not, she seemed upet though so he shifted slowly padding towards her his shadowy body shifting upon light paws.
"Yer alright Khepri luv?" he whispers his ears flattening slowly. He wasn't sure what was going on but such a moan of pain made him worry, perhaps she was sick again? What was he supposed to do? What was happening? Confusion pattered through his mind as he watched her his tongue lapping out over his pale lips. "It's gunna be alrigh' love I'm 'ere" though he wasn't sure what was wrong, or what he could do about it comforting words were all he had.

"It's time." Khepri said simply, her belly felt like it was about to expload as she laid herself down on the floor of the cave without another word. The sheer focus of her mind on the need to rid herself of the bodies of the cubs within her was such that she could barely even hear his words as he spoke to her.
Dark red eyebrows pulled together as her eyes squeezed shut. A shot of pain slammed her in the side and the huge lioness rolled over onto her side with a low whine.
The pain ran shivers down her spine and the still slightly weak female groaned in pain. Her body felt as if it were about to rip apart.
"K-Kota." despite herself, Khepri reached out a large white paw in his direction as the pain swelled up within her bell once more. It was unbearable and she needed that solid strength that never seemed to leave, the stolid wall that was her mate who loved her with every inch of fiber in his heart.
Jerking sharply as pain ran through her again, Khepri snarled sharply.

For a long moment the dark male could do nothing but stare at his large red mate, his mind slowly taking in her words, letting them seep in to those sleepy recesses and waken him in an instant. His coal black eyes widened as the situation dawned upon him and he moved quickly to Khepri's side nuzzling at her cheeks. "it's alrigh' luv I'm ere" he whispers laying down behind her to let her body sink comfoprtably in to his large black frame, his nose at her ear.
His husky voice whispered gently in to her ear, a deep soothing rumble echoeing from his chest. "it's alrigh'. Ah'm ere I won' let nothin appen to ya luv." He whispers nuzzling her cheek softly.
"Breath deep darlin' yer doin great." He of course had no idea if she was doing well or not, all he had were words of encourganment and this deep everlasting love for his ruby red mate, he knew she would make it but it frightened him, this was, after all, a situation he had never been in before.

Belly slowly rising and falling with each labored breath that she took, the crimson female tried her best to do exactly as Kota told her. His deep voice washed over her and calmed her as she tensed the muscles in her stomach and pushed as hard as she could.
the pushing felt as if it were ripping at her insides, killing her slowly even though she knew in the back of her mind that it was only cubs being pushed out. However despite the thoughts in the back of her mind, Khepri couldn't keep the yowl of pain from ripping out of her muzzle, leaving her shivering on the stone floor as something ripped and slipped within her stomach and instantly moments later.
The first cub was born, but for as momentous as the moment was... Khepri wasn't able to lay back and appreciate it. For only seconds later another pang ripped at her stomach and she thrashed sharply.
They'd had more than one baby.

'Kota quietly soothed Khepri whispering in her ear howmuch he loved her, that it would be okay, that he loved her more than the world, that he would let nothing happen to her.
When their first child slipped painfully in to the world the dark male peered over at him. He knew cubs were small, he remebered faintly being a cub himself infact but this tiny bundle, this little blind ball of soggy fluff. This was his cub.
Reaching a large paw over his solid mates back he lifted the cub in a large paw and looked at him. A smile played on his rough sea proud maw as he rested the tiny babe against it's mothers downy belly. "Thats ors tha' is." He whispers looking at the little damp bundle proudly.

"Ah woul'... 'ope so..." Khepri ground out as her stomach swelled in pain from her labored breathing.
One cub was more than enough, to have two on such a weakened state.... it was unbearable. It felt as if every pound she'd gained since she'd come back crushed her and every scar she had was in want to rip open. The pain swelled within her and forced tears from her tarnished golden eyes.
It hurt too bad.
Look at how pathetic you are.
To be pulled down by a few cubs.
Stupid female.
Ugly stupid female.
It's a good thing she's about to die.
Yes, good. One less thing to worry about.
She thought she'd been rid of the voices that plauged her, rid of the pain of their mentioning words into her very mind that assaulted her brain.
One final scream and it was all over. The final bundle of fluff was sent into the world with a gush of blood and pain.
Eyes closing slowly, the crimson female let out a soft sigh and stilled quietly, all motion ceased.

The big male watched as Khepri struggled to birth their second child but as he came in to the world the big hairy male once again lifted the cub in a large paw taking a moment to groom it clean of blood and muck before placing him beside his brother. It wa sthen that 'kotas turned to khepri a light shimmering in those coal black eyes.
Nuzzling the big red female he whispered gently "yeh done it luv, ye bringed them in good and proper." he nuzzled her again without any reaction. "Khepri?" His voice trembeled then his eyes widening and his lips parting as a terror ripped at his heart "Khepri? Khepri love wake up." He nuzzled and lapped at her face his rough course voice filled with fear.
He glanced at the cubs, then back at their motehr desperately, what could he do? They needed help. His paws stuck to the ground for a moment longer but he was upon his feet without a moments hesitation. She needed helpa nd he would rpuse the whole pride if he had to.
Speeding for the exit he looked back at Khepri his dark eyes full of fear and worry. "Be alright luv, don' ye be dyin on us." He choked his dark head and fore-quarters soon out on to the beach. "HELP!" It was the only word he could think to call, his loud anxious voice echoeing accross the pale moonlit sands. He glanced back again checking she hadent risen only to call out once again, his voice akin to a booming fog horn. "HELP ME!"

Kota's calls weren't even enough to pull her from her nightmare-ish dream she'd entered upon giving birth to their last son. The fact that she'd brought two healthy red and black boys into the world didn't even pull her from the dark depths of her mind as the darkness swirled around her endlessly.
Khepri was lost, paws groping out for land, company, family. Anything that might be considered real and not simply an illusion thought up by her weakened mind. Suddenly a bright flash swirled by her and Khepri lifted her head to stare at it. There in the distance was a vortex of color, swirling and twisting on the edge of her vision, unnable to be attained yet at the same time, it appeared that simply by running... or whatever she had to do in this floating world... she could reach it.
Being as it was the best idea that she had, that was exactly what Khepri did. Surging the muscles in her body as tight as was possible, the large ex-firekin broke into a run through the swirling darkness towards the colors in the distance. Tarnished golden eyes kept track of them as she strode through the darkness, keeping her eyes on the constant vortex of colors steady, running faster than she ever had.
So what if she wasn't healed completely? So what if the gashes and scars on her side and neck ripped back open again?
Kota was on the other side of those colors, she just knew it deep down in her huge heart. As long as she was able to run she would keep on doing so, running towards the male that meant the most to her in the world.
Suddenly, as if the thoughts in her head made it so, the colors were right in front of her. Digging her claws down into... whatever it was that the blackness was truely, Khepri stopped centimeters from them, peering at the vortex that was actually a flat disc-like mass floating in the air.
As if her dream wasn't crazy enough, Kota's voice screaming for help instantly tore through the darkness from the colored vortex.
Her mate was in trouble and here she was staring at a floating disc of colors. yes that was real protecting for him. Staring at a disc.
Pulling her front paws up, Khepri leapt through the disc of colors and opened her golden eyes in a flash, very awake and very sore. The world settled down around her, from the cold stone floor of their den to the two little lives that were nudging at her belly insistantly.
But where was Kota?

The big jet black male stood not too far away of course his huge furry body blocking the light. His calls floated on the breeze, loud and proud calling with those ever large lungs, crying for help for his ruby coloured love.
Glancing back for a moment his coal black eyes dazzled. She was awake! Skidding back in to the den he wrapped his neck around hers. "Khepri! khepri! I be a thinkin' ye be abandonin' me!" He whispers his voice full of panic, "Don' ye be scarein me like tha' agin lassy!" he gazed lovingly at his deep red mate a smile playing on his pale maw as he groomed and kissed at her face. "Ye canna be leavin' me lassy, I jus' dunno what I'd be a doin wit out ye." He whispers settling down shakily behind her. She'd given the big male the shock of his life.
He smiled roguishly then though his great sturdy frame shook like a leaf "I know ye wouldn't be a leavin ye lil ship mates lassy." He puurrd looking again to the two little fluffy bundles, his attention at last able to drift towards the two cubs though he pressed himself tightly against the deep red female. He wouldn't let her go.

Heat poured over her, warming her stone cooled fur by swamping her all at once. Kota was of course good for this, his large fluffy body could smother if he wanted it to as well, heat crashing against her. However his gentleness made her smile, he was being softer than normal.
"Ah'm sorreh Kota. Ah didn' mean ta leave yo' like tha'. Don' worreh, Ah promised ya Ah wouldn' leave yo' didn' Ah?" Khepri churred softly, her golden eyes watching him carefully as he nuzzled and kissed her. She wanted to be sure that he understood what she meant. She wasn't so weak that she would allow herself to die before him.
She wanted him to know that, because she was strong. She thought she'd proven that with how she'd survived her life so far.
Leaning her head down, her sore neck screaming as her scars were pulled tight over her skin, Khepri washed the backs of each of the little male cubs. Two little sailors for their small group.
A chuckle pulled from her suddenly and she looked back at him, "So 'ow's two males? Bettah 'n two girls?"

"Ar two lil cabin lads ey? Har! They be a stunnin pair lassy." He grinned, his dark eyes sparkling like the stars now. It was amazing how his eyes could change from dark and dul as coal to shimmering like the stars. He looked at Khepri and groomed her face gently his tongue lapping over her ears and forehead.
"Ye best be namein' um lassy. I aint any good with names" He grinned then, his dark eyes sweeping over the two small, yet surpriseingly large bundles. "Ah'v never seen such beautiful, healthy cubs lass, ye be an amazin mother."

A soft grin crossed her face and Khepri nuzzled at his neck and then turned to her sons. Red and black, it was a fitting color combination considering who their parents were, however Khepri had an idea for them.
Licking her tongue down the black one's spine, she smiled and nodded. "Vuai."
Doing the same to the smaller of the two, she pondered for a moment all the words that she had learned of in her years of wandering the savannah. "Isitini."
"Do they soun' like good names to yo'?" Khepri said gently, gazing up at him and nuzzling his chin. "They 'ave a good strong Fatha' too."

'Kota beamed as his two newest charges were named. His tiny cubs, that really wern't so tiny, with two huge parents and only the two of them being born he could already tell they were going to be giants among lions. His dark eyes sparkled happily and he groomed his mates head softly. "Yar lass, yer did wonnerfully. I knew ye'd pick guduns." He chuckled and moved closer to her if that was at all possible. "Why don' you sleep na lass. Ah'll keep an eye on um while ye rest. Yer need ya sleep ta be racin after them lil blighters once they get their eyes and ears a workin'" He chuckled admireing the two little cubs once again, a perfect combination of the both of them. Perfect in every way.
