This may be off topic seeing as we're a firearms based guild, but since we're on the subject of zombies(In this forum anywho), I figured a small thread about melee/HtH would be helpful. Now, lets say you had to get in close and guns weren't an option, what weapons would you use, close quarters combat techniques, and protection would you use?

well the idea weapon would be a shoulin spade, but thats probably not going to happen.
if i had to grab something from the nearby area i would probably bring my dog, an axe, and a baseball bat.
my tatic would be knock the zombie down, then run.
if there wasnt more than one i could then use the axe to finish it off.

Probably a light, fast, slashing weapon, depending on the state of decay in the zombies. A machete, maybe. 10 cent machetes have proven reliable in cutting down millions of the living easily, why not hordes of undead...

Machetes are probably best in most cases. I got an old army one that easily hacks pretty deep(For a weapon that hasn't been sharpened in ages) into the sides of trees and doesn't even take any damage. Got another one that's razor sharp and slices through brush like a hot knife through butter.

My only fear is contracting:
A. The virus that creates zombies if that's how they're made.
B. Some other form of virus or bacteria from their bodily fluids.

I suppose a gas mask or some other facial coverings as well as keeping any wounds covered would keep you safe from that though.

I'm all for the [steel] baseball bat idea.
Blunt trauma = less chance of infection for moi.

Very smart planning.

Better plan: avoid melee with the living dead/infected living. Risks of infection from even one drop of contaminated tissue or fluid makes such potential encounters beyond life or death.

My plan: avoid places where risks of melee are likely. My name isn't Ash.

My ideal weapon would be a trench spike. a shaolin spade is difficult weapon to use and you have to be well trained with it.
But in reality, likely a bayonet would be best.

Chainsaw!!!!1eleven

Okay, seriously, I'd take either a crowbar, or if I could make it, take a wooden baseball bat and wrap it in either bike or chainsaw chain. I saw a tool on CSI once, it's made to break car glass to escape from a car. It's about the size of a screwdriver handle, and when you press a button, it shoots out a steel slug about a half inch or so. It'd be interesting to see if something could be done along those lines.

The hammers for busting glass are pretty lethal, a friend of mine had to kill a rabid dog with one once.

Good choice.

If you got the right tools, making one is simple too. I made knuckles out of steel on a AUTO-CAD program and cut it out with an automated cutting program. If I was still in high school, I could just add a blade to the plans and I'd have cheap, efficiently made trench spikes.

You could probably screw around with a pair of normal brass knuckles if you want to make your own(Or just buy a pair).

i have an actual reproduction of one, but the blade is a piece of shot, I want to find a knifesmith to make a blade for it.

price would be high though.

My ideal melee weapon would be a crowbar. Ok, so the crowbar in and to itself isn't all that ideal, as it was never designed to be a weapon. It isn't balanced, but it is heavy enough to split some skulls and it is a very versatile tool, especially when it comes to getting past obsticles when on the run from the undead like sifting through debree and getting in/out of a boarded up house.

id probably take a heavy baseball bat along with that.
the crowbar would be more usefull in actually trying to kill something (you ARE going to have to deal with other people, and eventually kill a zombie in melle) and a baseball bat for "hit and run" tatics.
also i think chainsaws WOULD be usefull for gaurding a doorway for extended periods of time with minimal effort.

If you mount the chainsaw, maybe. If you're holding it... no way.

Now in my opinion that would be a better bayonet against the undead more so than a blade type bayonet. I guess I can see it puncturing a skull a lot easier.
