The black lioness stretched as she moved away from the den, the sun was rising and it was quite quiet and cool as the sun wasn't high enough to give off too much heat. Perfect time of day, though the evenings were nice as well, midday now that wasn't nice.
She moved towards the water, luckily it wasn't too far from where her father had chosen for them to live, away from most of the pride but that was probably beause he seemed to like being alone. Her father was strange. She had grown up with him though so didn't really mind very much.
Reaching the water she walked into it, and rolled over somewhat. Bath time, it seemed her mum got something into her head at least. She loved to wash in the mornings, rolling about in the water before lapping some of it up. It was a routine that she was getting use to. It was so nice, no one around.
Perfect.
She jumped upon a near by rock where she laid herself out to dry off a little. Then she would go and pester her parents for something to eat because well, she was too lazy to catch something for herself and truth be told she hated catching mice, they were boring and she was too small to catch much else!

Izulu was used to getting up early, usually when the sun first began to rise. He wasn’t particularly fond of lying around and sleeping late – at least not at home. He took naps out in the pride sometimes, in the shade of a tree or on the river bed. At home, with his two brothers, it was just a little hard for him to sleep in even if he had ever wanted to. Thus, the young boy had long since left home, meandering around his favorite part of the pride – the river.
His mother was slightly slow at times and she often forgot to watch the boys. Their father did the majority of that, really. Forgetting to watch them sometimes meant she also forgot to feed them, but thanks to one day out with her, he had learned one of the most best kept secrets of rogue cuisine – turtles! He was still a little clumsy at catching them, but he caught one at least every couple of tries. He had felt bad the first time he had to eat one, but realized soon that they were just like anything else. They simply had a shell.
Today, he was hidden behind the cover a large bush, his bright eyes staring at a few turtles sunning themselves on a log laying half in the water. He crouched down, waggling his butt slightly, and then with one great leap – crashed out the bushes and towards the river. Due to some miscalculations on his part, the turtles slipped into the water before he ever got there. He realized then that loud, crackling bush was not suitable coverage and that it was also too close. If he was going to sneak up on something, he needed to be closer and in something that would be quieter when he bounded out.
“Darn it,” he sighed moodily as he sat, his head drooping slightly. He’d have to wait a little while before they ever came out, so he could try again. In his disappointment, he never even noticed the female laying near.

His ears wilted as he heard her words, knowing instantly whose voice it was. Sure, it had been a while since he had last seen her, but one typically doesn’t forget someone like Umbia very easily. The sky-toned eyes of his shifted, finding the darker form of the female upon the rock, and he gave a weak and hesitant smile. He had said he’d be her friend, and he was pretty convinced that if he shunned her now, she’d revert back to exactly how she had been the first time around. That was not something he wanted to relive.
“Hi, Umbia,” he said hesitantly, eyes glancing regretfully towards the water where he knew those little turtles were hiding. It wouldn’t hurt to talk to her for a little while – after all, the turtles would be hiding until they thought he was gone, so who knew when it would be before they finally came out again. With a small nod, he pushed himself up and sauntered toward the rock. Plopping down beside it, he turned a grumpy face out towards the river as if a death glare would send the turtles scurrying back on shore.
It wasn’t until a few moments later that he realized he had allowed some awkward, strange silence to settle by not saying anything else, and he let the grumpy mood of his face melt away. “So.. what are you doing out here?” He grimaced at the question simply because it was a stupid one – but when one can’t think of anything else to say, what’s there to do about it?

Izulu pulled his eyes away from the water before him regretfully, turning the bright orbs to stare up at her instead. He really wasn’t too concerned if he looked grumpy over not being able to find the turtles or not – he usually looked grumpy so it truly wouldn’t be anything new. It really did agitate him, however, that he was incapable of doing it without his mother’s help still. He’d get it right one day, and he’d show her he could do it.
“Me? I suppose,” he shrugged, glancing back at the water, “I always leave the cave early in the morning. Mom forgets us anyway, and dad has a lot of stuff to do. I don’t want to be stuck playing with my brothers right now.” He flipped his tail, narrowing his eyes at something he thought he saw moving beneath the surface, then sighed as he couldn’t make it out. “I was actually out here trying to hunt the turtles, but I made too much noise.”

Izulu was actually rather pleased with the fact that he had two brothers. He didn't think a sister would be any fun at all, considering how much girls liked to complain and whine. He probably would have stayed away from home a whole lot more if he had been unfortunate enough to have a sister. They were so prissy and stubborn. Of course, it never really occurred to Izulu that he was kind of prissy and stubborn in his own right.
"Oh, that would be a good idea," he said slowly, bright eyes flashinga s they turned from the water, to her, and back. A wicked smirk spread across his maw, forgetting for the time that he was supposed to be annoyed with her, and instead he pushed himself up back to his feet. "Alright, so.. how are we going to do this exactly?" He turned curious eyes to the grasses along the bank, then looked back at her with a questioning quirk of his brow. Well, that was something. At least he was letting someone put in some opinions instead of taking everything over for himself.

Izulu had really ceased to worry about whether or not he was supposed to be annoyed with her. All it came down to was the fact that this was inevitable. She had made it pretty obvious that she was going to force him to be her friend, or at least he believed she would, and if something was inevitable he'd eventually give up fighting it. That just wasted a lot of energy. Besides, what was wrong with one or two friends?
He tilted his head as he mulled over her idea. Then, with a frown, he shook his head slowly, "but what if I can't hear you whispering?" His tail wavered behind him, snaking through the grass. He caught sight of his own tufted tail out of the corner of his eye, then smirked, coiling it close to his body. "What if we wave our tails up instead? That won't make any noise at all, and it'll be easy to see!" He glanced to the water quickly, noting that they hadn't resurfaced just yet, so the two still had a little time to finalize their plan.

“Alright,” he said with half a smile, the line of his maw curling in something akin to a smirk. He was pleased that his idea was working and pleased that someone seemed to be at least listening to him and following what he had to say. If everyone else listened to him like she did then he might have been able to get through life without being so pissed off at everyone all the time. At least if his brothers listened that way he’d not be away from home so often as he was these days.
”Oh, yeah, that should have indeed!” he said, nodding as he narrowed his eyes upon the water. He knew he probably wouldn’t be able to see them unless they popped their little heads up for air, but cats were curious and he couldn’t help but try. “Yes, let’s get moving then,” he said with a nod, moving to hide somewhat in the thicker parts of the grasses.
He stalked along slowly, making sure he kept up pace with her, though his eyes remained concentrated on the water below. He didn’t expect them to pop up again this soon, but he made sure to keep a close eye on any small logs or sticks protruding from the water. That was where they would bank for their sunbaths!

For a long while, Izulu stalked along the bank at the same pace as her, though he saw little to nothing in the water. He wasn't truly a patient creature by nature, and he was starting to get really fed up with his plans not working out quite as they were supposed to. Just as he was about to give up, however, he spotted a log a little further up the stream.
Waving his tail high for her to see, he crouched down and began to stalk towards it. Oh, but there were a lot of them, and the log was laying in a shallow bend of the river to boot! He felt his luck, for once, had truly turned out nicely.
He paused, watching for her for a moment, then turned his attention to the turtles. With one leap, he pounced down into the water and used his front paws to flip it up onto the bank. Being a turtle's nature, it instantly went into it's shell.
"Umbia, I got it!" he called, leaping up onto the bank again and for once ignoring the muddy fur on his forelegs. Now he just had to get it open.
