Hmmm....
Kivuli slowly circled the nearly-dead tree, eyes intent on the collection of pretty ornaments a bird had stored up there. The tree was much too tall for him to try and climb, not to mention the tree looked like it was about to fall over soon anyways. If he tried to jump on the tree it would topple over, and all of his precious shinies would fall into the swamp waters. And the young male was definitely not digging about in swamp much to get them. There had to be a better way. He just had to think.
Purple eyes narrowed as he circled the tree again, studying his shines from all angles. Hmmm.... what was the best way to get at this?

Shemshi, or Shishi, as she'd been affectionately dubbed, seeing as she shared the same name as another youth in the pride, had spent the morning so far getting very dirty. Getting very dirty, of course, was incredibly simple when you lived in a swamp. By the time she stumbled across Kivuli, very little of her light coat was visible under the fine veneer of muck she'd acquired. But what was he doing, going in circles around a tree? Maybe it was a special tree?
"Whatcha doin'?" she asked, curious.

Kivuli was so focused on his target that he didn't even notice the approach of Shemshi. It was only when she spoke did he realize that he had company, whirling around to face her. Was she coming after his shines? Or was she just passing by? One black ear flicked back as he studied his new companion. She had asked what he was doing, but it could have been a loaded question. At the same time, it could have just been a question. He would have to continue the conversation and find out.
"Calculating how best to get those shines out of the tree. Judging by how many tail lengths it is up the tree, getting it is proving to be rather challenging. Not that I can't handle that." The young male was quite self-assured, especially when it came to outsmarting anything (even trees). "What would you be doing?"

"Me? Just lookin' for frogs." She loved the delicious little things, especially because you didn't have to be big to catch them. They were the perfect prey for a juvenile such as herself, and made good trophies to take to her mother, who would croon praise and thanks at her in return for the tasty morsel. Though well aware that she could one day be Queen herself, Shishi would be perfectly content just to be a huntress. Privately, she was sure her brother Nari would be the one to succeed - mostly because she adored him.
The youth stared up at the tree, trying to see the 'shines' Kivuli was so intent on. Calculating and tail-lengths were lost on her, but pretty things weren't! "I bet somebody bigger could get 'em."

Looking for frogs? So trivial. Perhaps it was the most amusing thing that this young female could think up. Kivuli shouldn’t have been all that surprised. They did live in a swamp. Still, looking for frogs was like hunting, which meant that Shemshi was doing something productive. He would have thought much less of her if she had said she was splashing around in the mud. Hunting was at least a necessary skill, for any lioness.
Kivuli gave a sigh when she said someone bigger could get them, resisting the urge to roll his eyes. "That would ruin the fun, um... Swamp Water Coloured White Girl. If I asked for help from adults then they would ask for a share of the prize, not to mention a share in the glory. Besides, if I can't use your brain and figure out a way to get it then I can't say I'm smart, can I?" The young lion gave Shemshi a look before resuming his circling, trying to decide if he could jump and get them. "But if you have any ideas, feel free to share."

"I'm Shemshi," she corrected, "I'm the Queen's daughter." Therefore, she deserved to be treated properly! "You can call me Shishi."
"No adults, huh? Then unless you can make yourself taller somehow, I don't think you can reach them." What was he so preoccuppied with shinies and smarts and glories, anyway? It seemed silly to her!

Shemshi. Right. Wait, she was the queen's daughter? Kivuli paused in his circling, turning to stare skeptically at her. "Shishi the Queen's daughter? How am I supposed to know you're telling the truth about that?" The young lion found it hard to believe that a queen's daughter would be socializing with regular pride members like himself. She should be doing other stuff like... like... well, he didn't know what she should be doing, but it should be something queen-like.
"Size has nothing to do with it, Possible Queen's daughter Shishi," Kivuli replied with a small sniff, gazing up at his prizes again. "It has to do with brains. There's a big difference, you know."

"Of course I'm telling the truth!" Shishi shot back defensively, expression screaming her indignance at being doubted. "I have the sun on my back just like my mom, and nobody else here does!" Surely that was proof enough.
The juvenile sniffed, highly offended, and pointedly turned away from him. "Fine. See if I help you!"

Hmmm.... the sun on her back? Well, Kivuli couldn't think of any other lionesses in the pride who had this sun on their back. But then again, it could also be a trap. He had to think this through clearly, otherwise he would find up making a terrible mistake. It would do him no good to call a young lioness the queen's daughter if she really wasn't.
"Alright, you're the queen's daughter then. The sun on your back makes you royalty, yes? Then isn't it the job of the royalty to help the subjects in need?" He would hardly call himself 'in need', but getting Shishi to help him would be a great benefit. Getting help meant that he only had to do half the thinking, not to mention half the work. It was a win-win situation.

"If they're nice subjects," she allowed, but did turn back around. She was, admittedly, curious about these 'shines.' "I still say you need to be taller. You ought to stand on something." Just not her. Shishi was not going to have anyone stand on her.

"That's hardly fair," Kivuli said with a small scowl. Nice subjects? Psh. He was nice. He was just being a little cautious, that was all! If everyone just randomly believed a cub that claimed to be the daughter of the queen where would this pride be, hmm? He had to be vigilant! That way he could spot someone who didn't belong. Shishi should understand that.
Her idea made him pause, glancing back up at the tree. Stand on something.... hmm, that was definitely very clever. Why hadn't he thought of that? "I'll make you a deal, Shishi," Kivuli proposed, watching her reaction carefully. "If you help me get the shinies out of the tree, I'll share them with you." It really couldn't hurt to get in with the queen's daughter.

"Well why should I be nice to someone who isn't nice? I don't think that would be fair, somebody getting something they didn't deserve." Really, why would anyone want to be nice to someone who was mean? If they were being mean, they deserved mean right back!
Shishi paused then, considering Kivuli's offer. Shiny things were nice, on account of their being shiny. "Alright then. But we split 'em even, okay?"
She was not going to be conned by some weird boy.

"But you're supposed to be royalty. And that means you have to be nice to everyone unless they do something bad. Then you can punish them. Otherwise you have to look your best and make sure everyone likes you," Kivuli pointed out, raising his eyebrows. He had heard that sometimes the lions rebelled against their authority figures, which told him that the rulers were not nice to their subjects. Not that he would ever think of rebelling. His mother had gone to great lengths to convince him and his siblings that the swamps were the ideal place to live and they should be happy to live there. Not to mention rebellion was much too messy.
The young lion grinned when Shemshi said she was game. "Of course we'll split it even! 's fair that way. And we're partners now, so it has to be fair." Kivuli couldn't help but sniff at the end of the sentence, clearly miffed that Shemshi thought they wouldn't split things fairly. Just who did she think he was? "Right, so, who's going to be doing what?"

"Well I'm not the Queen," Shishi sniffed. "So I don't really have to be like that, now do I? I've got...thirteen brothers and sisters, Mom says. So I bet it's not gonna be me, anyway."
"Umm.." The scion peered up at the tree, thinking. "Well, we've gotta find somethin' to stand on, unless you want me to stand on you."

"I think you still have to be like that. You could be in line for the Queen... ship, but then since nobody likes you, one of your siblings could be chosen instead. That would be bad." Kivuli shrugged his shoulders, wondering idly what it was like to have that much competition for the throne. Thirteen brothers and sisters... he only had four and they were only competing for their mother's affection. Not that she didn't give it freely, but he felt like it was a competition. "How does your mother choose the next Queen anyways?"
Kivuli tilted his head at her words, glancing around. Hmm... nothing around here was close enough for them to stand on, and if it was big enough it was too far away to drag. That left them with one option. With a grimace, the young lion lined himself up against the tree. "Alright... you can stand on me, but be careful!"
