"Then" or "Than?"

I'm sure most of you have seen these words before, and often times I'm sure whther I'm using them correctly. So, discuss the proper use of these words and why they are commonly misused.

Here's my question: Which sentence is right?

Sentence 1

I would rather have an apple then an orange.

Sentence 2

I would rather have an apple than an orange.

Hmm...I believe then is used when talking about time, and than is used in comparison. I'm not entirely sure though. So sentence 2 is correct.

Also, I think that you only have to write rather once in that sentence, but that has nothing to do with anything.

I think it is 'than' when comparing something rather than 'then'. And see, I just used it then. Haha. And again, just there. biggrin
