Story

Fifteen-year-old Miaka Yuki is transported into an ancient Chinese kingdom by an old library book, The Universe of the Four Gods. Following the legend in the story, Miaka becomes the Priestess of Suzaku and must find her seven Celestial Warriors before she can save the kingdom and return home.

Creator

Yuu Watase was born on March 5 in a town near Osaka, Japan, and she was raised there before moving to Tokyo to follow her dream of creating manga. In the decade since her debut short story, Pajama de Ojama (An Intrusion in Pajamas), she has produced more than 50 compiled volumes of short stories and continuing series. Her works have provided the basis for two television series, an OVA series, anime soundtrack CDs, and a string of novels.

Volume 1: Priestess
Miaka Yûki is an ordinary junior-high student who is suddenly whisked away into the world of a book, "The Universe Of The Four Gods." There she becomes the priestess of the god Suzaku, and is charged with finding all seven of her Celestial-Warrior protectors.


Volume 2: Oracle
Miaka Yûki is an ordinary junior high-school student who is transported into the world of a book, "The Universe Of The Four Gods." Exhausted by her adventures, Miaka must go back to the real world, but the only one who can send her is the mysterious Oracle of Suzaku, Tai Yi-Jun.


Volume 3: Disciple
Miaka Yûki is an ordinary junior high school student who is suddenly transported into the world of a book, "The Universe Of The Four Gods." Surrounded by enemies with mystic power, she can only rely on her Celestial Warriors and a mysterious monk, a disciple of the oracle, to help her fulfill her quest! Miaka's best friend, Yui, also enters the book, but suffers a fate much crueler than Miaka's.


Volume 4: Bandit
To save her newly adopted country of Hong-Nan, Miaka must scour the nation for the remaining three of the seven Celestial Warriors who will help her in her quest. But the search takes her into the lair of bandits, and to a plague-cursed town where she has to die to survive!


Volume 5: Rival
To save her newly adoptive country of Hong-Nan, Miaka must venture into the heart of the enemy's capital. Her mission: to retrieve her true love, Tamahome; outwit the unscrupulous general Nakago; and confront Yui, the girl who was once her best friend, but is now her vindictive rival!


Volume 6: Summoner
Now that she seems to have gathered all seven of her Celestial Warriors, Miaka is ready to summon the god Suzaku, who will grant her three wishes. But Miaka's former best friend, Yui, has become her mortal enemy, and Yui's nefarious general Nakago has a secret plan...


Volume 7: Castaway
Now that the Seiryu Warriors have ruined their attempt to summon the god Suzaku, Miaka and her Celestial Warriors are forced to travel to a frozen northern country in hopes of gathering the sacred treasures that will grant them a second chance. Little do they know that they have made new enemies, ones who will stop at nothing to wreak their vengeance!


Volume 8: Friend
A savage storm shipwrecks Miaka and her Celestial Warriors on a creepy island inhabited by a ruthless matriarchal society that enslaves men! Meanwhile, her former friend Yui and the Seiryu Warriors are within arm's reach of the sacred treasures that Miaka so desperately seeks. Will she arrive too late to summon the god Suzaku and save the nation of Hong-Nan?

Miaka Yûki is an ordinary middle school student who is suddenly whisked away into the world of a book, "The Universe Of The Four Gods." In this alternate world, she must summon the god Suzaku by retrieving the Shentso-Pao. But, in order to get the treasure, Miaka must choose between her love for Tamahome and protecting the nation of Hong-Nan.

Thinking that her mission has failed, she runs off to the land of Xi-Lang, where a warrior of her arch enemy, the god Seiryu, finds her! And before the adventure is over, Miaka will find out who are allies, who are enemies, and who is determined to see her dead!

The first Shentso-Pao treasure from the northern country of Bei-Jia was stolen from Miaka, and the only treasure left is in the western country of Xi-Lang--and both Miaka and her friend-turned-mortal-enemy Yui are intent on getting the treasure for themselves! But Xi-Lang isn't a frozen wasteland of forgotten dreams and ghosts like Bei-Jia. It's a vibrant, living desert country, whose inhabitants are veterans of the last clash between priestesses and gods!

Nakago has entered the real world to collect on Yui's promise to grant him the third and final Seiryu wish. But his wish may have have the greatest consequence of all for Yui! Miaka summons Suzaku, but is it too late to protect her world and the world of the book?

Volume 1
Miaka is a junior high school student studying for entrance exams for Johan High School, the top school in the city. Not academically inclined, Miaka would rather forget studying and spend more time eating snacks--her favorite pastime--but she's cramming for the exam to please her mother. While studying at the library with her best friend Yui, she finds an old book called The Universe of the Four Gods. Upon reading the book, the girls are transported to a land resembling ancient China. Immediately on their arrival, a pair of bandits attempts to abduct Yui! A mysterious young man with the kanji for "demon" on his forehead comes to their rescue, but now he wants to be paid for his act of heroism!


Volume 2
An embittered Yui has sworn revenge on Miaka, believing that her best friend had no intention of rescuing her from the Qu-Dong empire. Now Yui has become the Priestess of Seiryu, the enemy of the Hong-Nan empire, and a rival for Tamahome's affections! Tamahome leaves Miaka to travel to Qu-Dong in an attempt to stop a war between the two territories from breaking out, and Hotohori starts to woo Miaka in his absence. Laden with Hotohori's gold and a big appetite, Miaka embarks on a journey to find the remaining three Celestial Warriors, who will help her in her quest to save the Hong-Nan empire and return home. But her search leads her into a lair of bandits and to a plague-cursed town where she has to die to survive!


Volume 3
Tamahome's love for Miaka has broken Nakago's hold over him, and his memory has returned. Miaka, thinking she now has all seven Celestial Warriors, starts the ceremony to summon Suzaku, only to discover that one of the warriors is an impostor--he's really the Seiryu Celestial Warrior Amiboshi! But when the real warrior Chiriko is discovered, the ceremony will no longer work. Now Miaka must travel to Genbu to find another way to summon Suzaku with a sacred treasure called the shentso-pao. Meanwhile, Yui learns that she too must travel to Genbu to summon Seiryu!


Volume 4
With one of the Celestial Warriors lost forever, Miaka and her men are more desperate than ever to obtain the two Shentso-Paos to summon Suzaku. But once Miaka has one in her grasp, it is stolen away by the Seiryu Warrior Nakago. Miaka goes to Nakago to get it back, and he sexually assaults her. Believing she is no longer worthy of becoming Tamahome’s bride, Miaka flees on her own, only to be saved by a man whom she thought was her enemy. Meanwhile, Tamahome falls under the Seiryu Warrior Tomo’s power of illusions…


Volume 5
Yui summons Seiryu and uses one of her wishes to make Nakago a god. She then sends Miaka back to the real world to separate her from Tamahome, but Tamahome holds on to Miaka, and the couple is sent to present-day Japan together. Suboshi follows Yui to Japan, intent on destroying Miaka for Yui. Simultaneous battles rage in both The Universe of the Four Gods and in present-day Japan, and Celestial Warriors die. But Yui is soon to discover that having her wishes granted comes at a great personal price…


Volume 6
Miaka and Taka are searching for the seven stones that will bring back Taka's memory as Tamahome. Without the stones, the man Miaka loves will disappear forever! Taka and Miaka journey back into the scroll and are able to meet the six Celestial Warriors once again. However, the demon-god Tenko, having been sealed inside The Universe of the Four Gods, is intent on destroying Suzaku to free himself. To do that, he must break Miaka and Taka apart, the people in whom Suzaku resides. Facing their biggest challenge, Miaka and Taka's love will be put to the test in this dramatic finale of the Fushigi Yugi series.
