when fort Sumter fell no one was killed until the union did the one hundred gun salute and two men got killed by their own rifles.

The American Civil War? The 'S' in Ulysses S Grant stood for bugger all. He just thought it sounded good.
The last words of one Union general (totally forgotten who it was) were "They couldn't hit an elephant at this dis-"

I'm English but I got the opportunity to study US history for the first time this school year just gone. The civil war is really fascinating.
Oh, and we only did the causes (1820-1861) so I don't know very much about what happened during the war exactly.

I thought the S in U.S. Grant was for Simpson, his mothers maiden name. Which was the name mistakenly put on his nomination to West Point by congressman Thomas L. Hamer of Ohio.
I think the congressman did him a favor U.S. Grant is far more patriotic than his original name Hiram Ulysses Grant or H.U.G.
