I've always been curious about this...do smilies, such as:

: D (without the space)
D:
^ ^;
XD
8D
;w;

et cetera, et cetera.

...count as a form of "TXT TLK"? Or would that only be the case if they were actually said out loud? (XD = Ex Dee, etc. )

When you are threatened I am sad.
When you are hurt I am mad.
When you feel like you deserve it,

I don't think so. I think smilies are just a way to show emotion or emphasis on the computer.

I will hold you down and prove that you,
In all your innocence,
Deserve nothing but the kindness
Only I can give.

Personally, I like using emoticons. It is difficult to get across emotion through text only in a casual post like this one. In an RP post, they would be entirely unwelcome; here, they're a good way to show emotion. ^^

It goes with me."

Definitely not txt-tlk. Smilies are an excellent way of getting across emotions that can't be conveyed online.

Indeed. I got nothin'.

I love using smilies. Do you have any idea how amazing it is to say:

"Go to hell. : ) "

It's much more effective than:

"Go to hell."

Agreed. 3nodding
Typing it out is okay, in my opinion, but not actually saying it out loud.

I use smilies to emphasize meaning.
Sometimes they help express sarcasm, happy anger, irritation, Ee Tee See...
For example.
A very annoying newb comes along.
"gime goldz!!1"
Saying "******** OFF!" is much less effective ******** OFF! D<

Or in my opinion, anywayz.
And also, that was a poor example.
I'm not feeling very witty today.

If someone said an emoticon aloud they just would deserve to be slapped at the very least in my opinion, not that I would slap the person: I would just look at them like they have a third eye or something all of a sudden. Anyhow, as long as you don't use an emoticon for every other sentence and in the correct context, like not using it while role playing, then they are not "txt tlk." I just hate it when I get an email from a friend and it takes a full minute extra to load because of emoticons.

Agreed.

Italics and bold text can only go so far.

Quite honestly, I voted yes, because I consider them an informal means of worded communication. I am of the opinion that use of smilies, or ESPECIALLY overuse of them, is more of a cop-out for portraying actual emotion with the words you use. This is not always true, everyone's inclined to let a few slip easily and hell, I've even seen them used in job-related emails when I was going in for an interview, but smilies work like an adverb to further infuse your statements to avoid confusion on the reader's behalf.

Understandably, sometimes you just can't put that smile into words (and sometimes online a nice *smile* doesn't exactly have the same killer-effect as that little yellow emoticon that so often pops up) but I personally refrain from using them if I can convey otherwise.
I consider "text talk" an informal, and slightly lazy manner of speech, so I group smilies in with that on account of them being an informal and slightly lazy manner of showing emotion. Moreover, I consider it almost a dialect or writing style, and I am not the type to judge emotes when they come along.

Normally I Use Only [^^/(: ] , Because I Believe That Those Smiles Won't Have Any Other Meaning.

I Believe Smilies are Ways To Convey Your Emotion via Computer, However, Over-use of Them Irritates Me (:

Personally I am quite fluent with emoticons and i think that they are great fun. They have nothing to do with the immense wave of "lol' becoming an acceptable mean speech. x3
