She had the most fascinating markings, Ukene thought reverently as she stared at the other girl. That there was a crescent moon, her mom had told her, though it didn't look much like any moon she'd ever seen. She and her siblings had watched the moon at night, and Ukene was quite taken with the thing, but as far as she knew it was a big almost-round thing (round enough to count as round!) and not a small slice like it was on Alcmene's fur. But Mom had said that was a moon too, and Mom knew everything, so the little cub guessed she had to take it as fact.
They'd already been introduced, but she'd spaced out somewhere in the middle and missed a lot of talk about some titles or something. But it was no problem, it couldn't have been anything important - anything important would have been said in 10 words or less, not long, looong speeches. All she knew was that this was someone important to her Mom, ergo, someone important to her.
She knocked herself out of her wandering thoughts and cocked her head to the side, still staring at Alcmene. "You're really pretty, do you know that? Like stars, and a moon too probably -but not a real moon, 'cause the real moon is round and your's isn't." Ukene grinned, obviously proud of her friendliness and polite manners.

Alcmene was unbelievably excited. She'd been worried when her friend Zizi had gone away, always impatient for her return- and her return was very exciting because shortly afterward she had had cubs. Nothing yet in her short life had excited the princess so much, not even the exciting idea of being the queen when she grew up. She was happy to have dragged away one of the three for some amusement, determined to prove herself to be a fantastic friend. She was putting a lot of pressure on herself, but she was way to enthusiastic and excited to notice.
She was getting ready to ask Ukene what she wanted to do when the smaller cub complimented her. The princess grinned toothily.
"Thank you," she answered, turning her head and trying to look at the markings on her back, "It is the shape of the moon, just it's when the Great Lion is falling asleep or something." Ally still had a lot to learn about, she'd decided for herself that the pride's deity obviously needed rest and that was why his eye closed like it did. She knew her own eyes were hard to keep open if she got tired!
"You're very pretty too!" Ally added cheerfully, remembering her manners. She hopped around the other cub and batted at her tail with a giggle, "Your tail matches your eyes, you know. It's the only color you got except gray!"

Ukene nodded solemnly, all her careful attention on the other girl. That did make sense, at least to the little cub, and it's not like anyone could blame the Great Lion for taking a nap now and again - after all, he had to look after them all the time and that definitely had to be tiring.
Giggling at Ally's playfulness, she fluffed up her tail to the best of her ability and teasingly waved it in front of the other cub. "I look like Mom!" she proclaimed proudly, before continuing in a stage whisper: "She's grey too, you know."

Ally growled playfully when Ukene's tail fluffed up and waved defensively against her batting at it. After a couple attempts to get a hold of it and bring it to a stop, she caught onto it and flopped onto the ground- trying to keep a hold on the tail and trying to groom it.
"Yeah, your mom is one my best friends," Ally said proudly after losing her hold on the tail again, it was proving to be very difficult to keep a good grip upon, "My daddy has blue like me, but I look more like my uncle Njiru. He's black and starry too." She left out that he and her father didn't really get along, not really sure how she felt about that- she didn't want to know what anyone else thought, especially a cub younger than her.

Teasingly bopping Ally on the head with her tail after she'd lost hold of it once again, Ukene turned around to face her with a large beam on her face.
"That's awesome! You're one of Mom's bestest friends too," well, she hadn't said it outright, but she'd talked about Alcmene often enough and with so much fondness that Ukene figured it had to be so. "She says you haven't got that many friends, but that's silly. You've got me and Mom and that's loads!" In her mind, they were both fantastic enough to make up for anyone else Ally thought she might be missing. "And Upenzi and Utunzo will be your friends too, once they're not snoring away." Nodding along to her own statements was a habit the young cub was starting to adopt and she quickly continued, "Though I guess they could be your friends while snoring too. But that's not very fun."
There was no hesitation whatsoever in volunteering her siblings as new friends for Ally, and it never even crossed her mind that they might mind. They were the awesomest siblings in the whole wide world, and they'd be awesome friends for Ally!
Ooh, there were more starry lions?! That little piece of information was quietly stored away under 'Important Things: Do Not Forget, Seriously' in Ukene's mind, just in case she ever met this uncle Njiru. "Is the Great Lion falling asleep on him too?" Hmm, that sounded slightly odd, but whatever it was, was quickly dismissed as unimportant.

Ally squeaked when Ukene's tail got away and bopped her on the head. She wasn't expecting that! Rubbing her nose against her paw, she scrambled up to her feet and around to face Ukene again. Beaming, she nodded. "I'm gonna get Upenzi and Utunzo sometime too, but right now I wanted to play with you!" she explained brightly. She had every intention of sneaking away Zizi's cubs to play games, they wouldn't be as busy as Zizi and were small enough to play most games.
"I have my brothers and sister, too," she said thoughtfully, but with a small shrug, "But it's more fun to go looking for different cubs to play with. I'm s'posed to know lots of people anyway, I think- everybody knows my daddy."
She blinked at the odd question about her uncle, she couldn't remember if he had a crescent moon on him too or not. Daddy did, that was certain! After thinking a moment, she decided to just go with it- and she nodded enthusiastically.
"Yeah!" she said, "My dad does, too. And Mia and Taigi too- but they all have it on their faces. I'm the only one with it not on my face."

"They do?" Ukene blinked, not knowing Alcmene's daddy at all. She hadn't met him, had she? The cub didn't think so, on the account of her being very sure that she would have remembered meeting a full-grown lion up front, if only 'cause she hadn't actually seen any, yet. Well, from a ways off, but that didn't really count, did it?
In either case, it wasn't nearly as interesting as the piece of news that her newfound friend had siblings. Siblings! She'd have to bug Upenzi and Utunzo and Alcmene to go find them sometime so she could meet them; especially if the Great Lion was on their coat, too!
"So that means you gotta be special, right? If you're the only one with it here." She put a tiny paw on the mark, beaming at the older cub. "And you've got stars, too! Stars are awesome, don't you think so?"

Ally giggled at Ukene's reaction to her comment about her father, realizing that maybe little lions like her didn't count. They would at least know of him. "Of course," she said brightly, "He's the king, everybody at least knows who he is even if they never really met him before."
She turned awkwardly around to try to look at the markings over her back, beaming at what Ukene suggested and giggling quietly whens he reached out to touch it. She was the only one with the stars in her family, her immediate family anyway, but she tried hard not to count her uncle Njiru.
"Maaybe!" she agreed, "Stars are really nice, I like mine."

"He is?" Ukene boggled at this new piece of information - did this mean Alcmene was some sort of.. princess?! A fairytale quickly unfolded in her mind's eye, featuring her new friend as the swooning heroine and some faceless lion (that looked suspiciously like Utunzo, the only lion she had seen up close so far) as the brave, conquering hero.
But then again.. Ally didn't seem like the type to just sit around and be rescued, did she? Naah, she kinda didn't; at least Ukene couldn't imagine her idling away while she was in trouble - Alcmene was smart, or at least smarter than Ukene, if not nearly as smart as Utunzo was!
Zoning back in to the situation at hand, the little cub noticed that her friend had said something. What was it? Oh, right:
"I wish I had stars too! Then we could be like, the Starry Something Somethings! Like two heroes, right, and save everyone that needed saving or maybe just hunt for old people that can't hunt themselves, but that'd be very nice too, wouldn't it?" Ukene beamed happily, liking this particular daydream much more than the previous one.

Ally laughed when Ukene reacted to the information about her father, she had thought they would already know but it was rather entertaining being the one to inform her friend of it. She didn't mind when Ukene seemed to go off into her own little world, but waited patiently- something she had been taught to do, something emphasized even at her young age. Her giggling resumed full force when Ukene remembered they were talking about stars, Ukene was a lot of fun.
"Yeah!" she agreed with the idea, but shook her head, "We don't have to match! Why can't we be heros anyway?"

"You're right, we can!" Ukene perked up, beaming brightly at the older cub. "But we're probably going to need a better name, especially since we're not actually starry - or I'm not, but you are, but I'm not, so - and I'm not very good with naming things." It was one point where her otherwise quite creative mind utterly failed her time and again. Pet rocks ended up being named Rock. Butterflies were named Insert-Colour-of-Choice Butterfly. Sometimes, Ukene was really glad she wasn't the one that'd had to name her and her siblings - Mommy was infinitely better at stuff like this (although in the little cub's mind, Zizi was infinitely better at everything).

"Right!" Ally said brightly, pausing to consider the naming dilemma presented. Did they need to be starry to use the name Ukene had.. half come up with? Maybe it would be just as good to come up with something entirely new, probably easier. But what was there? She shifted her weight around her paws thoughtfully, wondering what would be a good name. They weren't the type of heroes defending against the bad guys, they didn't need a threatening name.
"Do we want an obvious name, or something secret?" she asked, still thinking.

"Hmm.." The younger cub scrunched her face up, deep in thought. "We'd have to be sort of secret, right? Since we're helping people out.. I think. At least that's how it's done in the stories, or the ones I've heard anyway."

"Hmmmm!" Ally thought, her tail swaying behind her as she did. She continued to shift her weight around her paws, fidgeting as she tried to come up with a wonderful idea. She squeaked when she realized how twitchy she was being and stood firmly, trying to steady herself. She wasn't supposed to be so fidgety, it was one of the more difficult things she had to work on.
"Well, maybe we can just start trying to help," she suggested carefully, "Then maybe a name will just come to us. That might be easier to do, then we don't have to worry about a name before we start!"

"Right!" Ukene nodded, beaming yet again at her new friend. Ally was clever, and she wasn't even Utunzo or Upenzi or Mom! The older cub was made completely of awesome in the younger's mind at this point.
"And maybe, maybe we'll get like, inspiration? Or it'll just hit us, BOOM! right in the middle of everything and we'll just know what we're supposed to be named." She nodded again, more seriously this time: Ukene had a hard time imagining all the great heroes sitting around in their camp and voting on a name. This sounded so much more logical!
