Defense Against the Dark Arts

Defence Against the Dark Arts is located on the third-floor of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It is also named for short D.A.D.A. This job was also reported to be jinxed for more then 6-7 years during the Reign of the Dark Lord. A fairly useful subject that educates the young minds of wizards on helping them protect themselves against the Dark Arts. Students focus on learning Defensive techniques to help block spells, hexes, curses and jinxs. They are also taught on how to protect themselves against creatures such as Boggarts, Werewolves, Hinkypunks and other creatures of the wizarding World.

Harmony had fallen asleep in her class room. Again. Preparing her classroom for her curriculum took days, so she had arrived entirely too early, as she had the year before, to do so. The woman was up now though, busy with a few last minute things before she had to buckle down and begin teaching for the year. Her mind was off on several different things, as it usually was while she worked. The thought that took center stage in that instant was of the happenings the night prior. Her pink lips turned up at the corners thinking about it. The children had arrived and the sorting hat had picked the houses for the newest of the bunch. Also a few newer things took place this year, such as they were holding a triwizard tournament. Hogwarts had, had one before but it was always an occasion when something of this proportion took place anywhere. Of course Harmony hoped it would not distract her students from the lessons at hand. They would probably end up using their knowledge in the tournament if picked anyway, so it did them no good to be distracted.

Many of the houses had, had some form of a party as well and it didn’t aide in the Defense against the Dark Arts teacher’s plight to get to sleep. Instead she used the time to set up her class room, it was filled with books, mostly her own, any form of dark arts and its defense could be found on the shelves circling the room. The ten long tables stood silently behind her, five to each side of the room with a gap down the middle for her to walk through. The student’s seats were benches. There wasn’t much else in the room, besides her desk and a small stair case that led to a slightly more elevated part of the room that encircled the ground level where all of the tables and benches sat. The door was situated at the back of the room; she paid little attention to it most days.

The Professor hummed quietly as she wrote on the chalk board behind her a few class rules and the first assignment of the year:

Class Rules-
-Do not talk unless otherwise allowed
-Pay attention, anyone caught sleeping should be prepared to wake up to something startling
-Participate during class activities
-Obey your professor

Assignments-
First years- One page assessment of the first chapter of Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection.
Second years- One page essay on all you know about dark creatures.
Third years- two page essay on what you remember from last year and anything new you learned.
Fourth years- List ten curses and what they are used for.
Fifth years- A detailed explanation of a patronus and its use.
Sixth years- One page essay detailing the use of dementors in Azkaban and a small explanation of Inferi.
Seventh years- Enjoy not having D.A.D.A work for once.

She put the piece of chalk down and glanced at her loose handwriting for a moment, imagining the student’s groans at work on the first day of class before chuckling quietly. Harmony glanced at the clock above the board to check the time before carrying herself to a bookshelf to pick out one of the newer books she’d gotten from Archibald smiling at how they’d kept in touch through sending different books to each other. This time he’d sent her a book on cursed artifacts, along with a note that told her he was somewhere in Romania looking for a cursed item that seemed to be making the dragons in the area particularly angry with each other. Apparently the item had no wielder, which intrigued him quite a bit. She smiled at the thought of him trying to reason with a very large dragon and sat down at her desk, reading where she had once left off.

Sesh Kindler
"It's Professor to you!"

Reaching the D.A.D.A classroom, she knocked in case she was doing somehing important, then opened it a few seconds later without waiting. She was holding her textbook down at her side, out of date but still interesting to read. Her long, slightly curly hair was down at her sides today, the different layers completely obvious even though it was a dark black. Her usual green stripe down the right middle side of her head and purple stripe down the left didn't stand out as much as they would in broad daylight. Her sparkling green eyes did, however.

Looking at the board, she grinned and put her free hand on her hip. "Oh, I see. You're trying to take over as the "mean teacher" this year, huh? Well, you might want to pick a different dream to aspire after, because the role of the "mean teacher" has been forever taken by me!" She smirked, looking around the old room.

"Slept in again?" She asked, shaking her head."Go grab some breakfast before classes start, won't you?" Sesh was leaning in her doorway now, slightly bored. She was actually wondering about Quidditch, and why they would be keeping up with the games during the Tournament. It wasn't like she was complaining, since the matches were really fun and what got everyone's minds off of the bounds of homework and tests coming up.

"I'm not trying to be the mean teacher, maybe nominated for the teacher who gives the most work?" Harmony said looking up from her book with a sly grin at the woman standing in her doorway. The woman closed her book, dog earring it in her place in the process and put a hand under her chin. “Of course you don’t seem to mean yourself, Professor Kindler.” Harmony never sat in on other classes so she only knew her colleagues for who they showed her instead of how they taught their classes. She leaned back in her chair, her head almost touching the black board and crossed her arms as the astronomy teacher said more.

With a soft sigh Harmony the small piece of advice and instead took up on the first statement. “Yes, I don’t much like the teacher’s dorms, perhaps I’ll renovate, and it’s not as if I don’t live out of this classroom anyway.” She said with a laugh getting up from the chair and took a few steps up the steps. “Perhaps here?” She said with a wave of her arm around the spot at the top of the stairs. Turning she had a pleasant smile placed upon her face and leaned against a railing of the staircase.

“So what brings you all the way to my third floor?” Asked the brunette woman taking in her bored expression, it seemed far away, Like Harmony’s glance usually did. She looked her over, noticing the worn out text book in Sesh’s hand and briefly wondered the last time she’d gotten an updated one.

Sesh Kindler
"It's Professor to you!"

She grinned at her. "Ah, but looks can be decieving," Her gaze followed Harmony as she made her plans to move into her classroom. She couldn't help but laugh at the thought. It was true, she did spend much of her time in the classroom and reading, but it was about time for a change. Maybe this year Sesh could help her get out and open up more, maybe even find a cute guy as well. She couldn't play in the Quidditch matches or compete in the Tournament, and she didn't ed a guy (in her opinion, anyway). So, Harmony would become this year's newest challenge.

"If you moved in here, we would see you maybe once or twice a year. Not only that, but who's going to be there to help calm down McGonagall when I put explosives in the treacle tart or damage something expensive?," She asked, slowly walking inside and taking a look around. She was usually one of the first to arrive at Hogwarts and one of the last to leave, but she hadn't had a chance to see the D.A.D.A room yet. It was pretty neat, which was expected from Harmony, but still kind of intimidating. She had both hands behind her back now, holding the book while her bright eyes scanned the room. The Astronomy teacher would have bet all of this year's teacher salary that if she ran her finger against the tops of the desks, there would be no dust whatsoever.

She looked around the room and continued to advance forward as she replied to Harmony's question. "I didn't see you at breakfast and figured you'd be down here. Why, do I need a reason to visit you now, Professor?" She raised her eyebrows at her, smirking. Most of the teachers she'd be teaching along side of, like Flitwick, had even taught her when she had attended Hogwarts. It wasn't much fun in the castle with a bunch of rule-abiding old hags teaching, so once a girl roughly Sesh's age came to teach, it took only a matter of seconds for her to become attatched. It wasn't like there weren't other fun things to do besides bug Harmony, like help Peeves unscrew the chandeliers and research the Big Bang theory.

“Hmm, I think I’m slightly insulted! I mean I’d be out of my room at least three times!” Harmony defended herself against the other teacher’s joke with a laugh. Then walked a little down the raised part of the class room to a portrait that was slightly crooked and straightened it, then looked to Sesh with a sideways glance. “As for your mischief might I suggest…not breaking anything expensive? Or at least pegging it on a student you don’t like.” The brunette turned and crossed her arms loosely.

As the other person in the room answered the woman’s question she had to smile at it, her eye’s were at the ceiling contemplating how much damage the two small chandeliers she’d gotten as a gift from her father could take. “Well I suppose not, it just seems like a chore to walk all the way up here from the great hall, or down from your tower from that matter.” She said with a smirk, while her eye’s moved back to the place she’d joked about putting a room earlier. The idea was becoming more and more appealing as she began to think about how much homework she would be grading throughout the year.

The Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher’s mind moved away from the upcoming schoolwork briefly to think about the triwizard tournament and what the challenges would be this time around. Then she looked out the window near the portrait she’d straightened, the classroom was situated in such a way that she could see one corner of the Quidditch pitch and thoughtfully asked, “So how do you think the team’s attention spans will fair against the pull of attention towards the Tournament?”

"It's Professor to you!"

She blinked a few times before realizing that she was talking about Quidditch. "Well I'm sure we can hold our students' attention for about four minutes before chaos breaks out," Sesh looked over her shoulder as the halls were filled with students yelling. Classes were starting, but she knew that her own didn't start 'till late that night, while Harmony had another hour to herself.
"Well, I guess I should get going, then. I'm sitting in McGonagall's class today, and she'll kill me even if I'm point two seconds late," She gave a sheepish grin before going over to the door. "You should sit in one of mine. There's always a chance you could fall off the tower or get hit with a telescope," She turned back around at the door, holding her textbook with one hand while the other held on to the doorframe.
"I expect to see you at break. Don't lock yourself up in here all day," She said, loud enough for Harmony to hear at the other side of the huge classroom. With a small wink, she left the classroom, following the trail of students over to the usual classrooms.

The other professor had been out the door before Harmony could respond to anything so she laughed at her description of the class and began to think of some of the clumsiest students and how they would fair in the class. Then she looked out her window to the wonderful day and sighed. How could she stay cooped up in her room when it seemed so great out that day? The teacher looked around her room, for any last minute thing she needed to finish up, which was her priority.

Although her students’ learning was her priority her desire to relax in the sun affected her sweep of the room and she was less hard on it that she usually would have been. Figuring it was fine for the kids and anything that needed to be done could wait or would be noticed during a class. She smiled suddenly, snapping out of her appraising appearance and went to her desk to pick up the book she’d set there. Flipping through it briefly to make sure her place had not been lost Harmony turned towards the door and began walking, she wanted to check if she’d received anything by owl since she hadn’t been down to the great hall that morning. So her direction was headed for the great hall then on to the lake.
