I was surfing channels when I settled on Fringe. It is too much like X Files for me to be happy watching it. If you're going to do X Files, do it. Not some sad shadow of the concept. JJ Abrams is capable of far better than blatant plagiarism.
Anyhoo, the bad guy of this series seems to be a well armed observer, watching the end results of experiments begun decades earlier. His weapon of choice was a very odd looking large barrel pistol that does not shoot a lead projectile but a focused sound wave.
No effort has yet been made to explain this weapon or how exactly it works, but it appears (in this fictional story) to work very well. One blast and you're dead. The character single handedly killed off a well equipped FBI team.
I've read of the German, French and US experiments with acoustic weapons. But all of these are far bigger and require tons of power to do far less damage.
