I don't know if this would actually belong in the guild, please tell me if it doesn't, then delete this Dx

Anywho! I've been wanting to paint/draw/color on canvas and vinyl shoes like vans, chucks, flats, etc. I have the paint/markers/sharpies and stuff, but the actual problem is that I need a sealant to coat the shoes with after painting/whatever is done so when I wear them out, it won't come off =/

I have asked some peopel in the f&s forum, saying to get it from your local craft store but I don't know what to ask for...also I must be able to get it in Canada, and I prefer not to order online, but will if it absolutely resorts to that (I like in store purchases better)

also a girl told me she has just painted on them with acrylics and they stayed without a sealantand were warm everyday, apparentally the paint job looked better than the shoes in the end, what type of acrylic paint would I use?

TL;DR

Painting on canvas or vinyl shoes, what sealan would be best used, and where can I buy it in Canada)?

What do I ask for?

What type of paint could i use if I don't find a sealent that will last against the weather?

I've done painting on clothes before, too, and have often wondered how to keep the paint from coming off.

There are many brands of fabric paint that you can use that won't come off in the wash, but most are those plasticy-looking types like Tulip brand fabric paint.

Some of the craft stores I visit (such as Hobby Lobby, Michael's, and JoAnne's) have a kit of fabric markers that I think comes with some kind of sealant or instructions for how to make it permanent. I'll have to look into it next time I go there.

Also, I work in a hardware store, and with our camping gear, we keep this spray can of cloth waterproofing sealant for jackets, tents, and stuff that you'd wear outside. One brand is made by Scott (they make tape and other adhesives as well) and I think some of the camp stuff makers make a bunch too. So maybe try a sporting goods store or a place that sells camping gear, and look for the waterproofing stuff. It can't hurt.

Thank you for your input, I tried looking online at hardware stores but couldn't seem to find the spray you were talking about =/

Fellow Canadian here. Do you have a Wal-Mart in your area?
Wal-Mart sells a wide variety of Plaid brand arts and craft supplies and thankfully they're affordible. So go in to their craft department and look at their "FolkArt" acrylic paints. They come in bottles about the size of a roll of loonies and are arranged neatly in a special rack. You can't miss them.

In that same section - usually on the lower shelves you'll find different types of glue and cans of sealers. Carefully read the lables and descriptions to find the one that suit your project. You could try to ask an employee but they usually don't have any idea either.

If you have a Michael's in your area - the employees there should be able to help you! They're a little more specialised. Simply tell them what you intend to do : painting canvas shoes - and ask them what paint you should use and what sealer to make it weather proof.

They probably even carry blank canvas shoes too!
The downside to Michael's is higher prices.
