A soft breeze ruffled the young hyena's fur slightly, leaving a few pieces of fur sticking up on his head. He lifted a paw to push the stray hairs down, but it only tousled his fur further, giving his a disheveled appearance. Hewa did really care about how he looked though. While other young hyena's his age were doing there fair share of skirt chasing and looking their best, the only one in his life he needed to impress with mama.
Some of the other pups made fun of his dedication to his mom, but Hewa knew better. He was just being a good son. Besides, if anyone got rough with him he could just disappear and come to mama for help. She always knew the right thing to say when Hewa didn't. She was the greatest.
Turning around, he trotted further back in the den where mama was curled up. He had wanted to let her sleep-Hewa had always been an early riser, and didn't like mama to be deprived her sleep- but was eager to start the day.
Nosing her stomach carefully as to not awake her too rudely, his pipped quietly, "Mmmaamaaaa, wake up!"

Esther growled quietly in her sleep, limbs twitching in a dream. She was running, running, searching for something that was just out of view on the horizon. No matter how far she ran and how fast, she couldn't see it. All she knew was that she had to keep running . . .
"Mmmaamaaaa, wake up!"
A loud voice in her ear quickly woke her up. She lunged to her paws, snapping at the air around her head. Her eyes met the startled ones of her son, and she quickly stopped. Breathing quickly, she sat and waited for her heart rate to slow. Once she had caught her breath, she smiled lovingly at her darling and hastened to reassure him.
"Good morning, darling! You startled me a bit. I was dreaming. But I'm fine, don't worry. How are you this morning?"
As she was talking, Esther stretched her limbs. A figure slithered out of the darkness and coiled up one her legs to wrap around her neck. It was Tambuzi, her new companion. She and the male snake had met when Hewa was younger and the snake had agreed to watch her son while she was scouting.
"Good morning, Tambu."
"Good morning Esther, Hewa," hissed the snake in a friendly manner.

Hewa grinned and lovingly nosed his mothers side.
"Morning mama." He greeted happily. "Was I in the dream mama? I hope it was a nice dream. I'm okay, I woke up early and couldn't go back to sleep."
Hewa's tail wagged energetically in greeting to Tambu. He turned and padded towards the snake so they were at eye level.
"Hello Tambu." Besides his mother, Tambu was the only one Hewa trusted. If mama liked him, then he must be a pretty good snake.
Glancing up at his mother, he grinned.
"What are we doing today mama?"
