Iah didn't see what good it was that he had three sisters. THREE. And no brothers to play with. He had constantly complained about this, and was puzzled to receive a reply that most males would like to be in his situation. Both parents refused to give him a clear reply, telling him that it was better for him to find out on his own.
Well, if they didn't want to answer his questions, maybe somebody here could, he decided, casting a gaze about. Would it matter if it was a female or not? He had seen many other lionesses about, and he wondered if they would take his questions kindly.
If he trod carefully, of course.

Ukene was lounging around, as she was wont to do these days. It seemed that everyone around her was busy with their duties, and the young lioness often found herself left to her own imagination on the occasions (well, not entirely on her own - she tried to keep to well-populated areas of the pride. Even if she did forget it. Quite often. But she did try, for the sake of her mother's worrying and that was all that counted, right?). Not that she lacked imagination or anything. In fact, most would probably say that she had a bit too much of it, something that often caused her to space out and forget everything around her in favour of her own daydreaming. Or ramble on endlessly. Or get lost on another one of her everyday adventures. Or bother anyone in the pride with interesting colours on them. Which was what she was intending to now, of course. She'd spotted the smaller cub some time ago, and had instantly been drawn in by the beautiful purples of his coat. They were awesome; Ukene had never seen anyone with a coat that pretty, or just plain purple. Or at least she didn't think she had, but she might have have and then forgotten about it or something - she wasn't shy about admitting that that might've been the case. "Heya!" She wasn't shy at all, really. "You're really, really purple." She'd meandered closer, and was currently staring rather fixedly at Iar with her best smile. It tended to come off slightly on the side of creepy, something that hadn't quite occurred to her yet.

It wasn't really much of a surprise then, when a female voice broke into his thoughts as he was gazing at the sky. The cub blinked and turned to look at her; well, she seemed bigger than him, but not quite so big as the adults. This was an older female, he decided. It wasn't that hard to see that.
"Uhh, thanks." He responded, flashing her a grin. "Apparently my uncle's really really purple too. Mother is just really really blue." He paused, thinking that he shouldn't continue rambling on about how brown, how blue his other family members were.
Iah then looked at the other, wondering if he should compliment her in return. Well, it would be polite, right? Something he didn't doubt his parents would discourage. "And you're really really...uh...grey, white-ish." He added rather lamely.

"Why, thank you!" Ukene didn't catch the lameness of his reply at all, far too delighted with anyone that liked her coat-colours as much as she did. Or at least pretended to.
"I look like my Mom." She nodded, pausing halfway through to add: "Well, sort of. Kind of. Not really, but a bit. I've got the same eyes at least - or well, not the same eyes, obviously, but the same colour.." She trailed off, slightly lost in thought.
"What were we talking about again?" She asked with a sheepish smile after a few moments of silence.

Iah could only politely nod along, resisting an urge to roll his eyes. It wasn't as if he didn't like conversation, but she was going off on a tangent he didn't particularly know or care about. He wasn't looking to chatter with someone about genetic traits.
"About family?" He answered rather vaguely, then added. "I have three sisters." Then, after a slight pause, remembering his purpose, "There are lots of girls around here, aren't there?"
There. He was getting back on track now.

"There are?" Ukene was looking positively puzzled. She'd never noticed anything of the sort, but then again, her siblings did say she could be a bit slow sometimes. This could very well be one of those times!
"I.. guess so?" She chanced, "Maybe?" It did sound nice for him to have that many sisters, though. That was -- she did a quick headcount -- one more sibling than her! She supposed he was like Utunzo then, the only boy in a litter of girls. Even if his had more of the 'girls' part than theirs' did.
She nodded sagely, having caught up to hear own thoughts; "My brother is the only boy, too. Only he's a bit older than you -" and heaps more awesome, at least in Ukene's opinion, but she wasn't going to say that! She did try to be polite, " - and he only have two sisters, instead of two. That's me and Upenzi."

Perhaps, he thought, it didn't seem as obvious to her as it was to him, simply because she was a girl. Perhaps he was more sensitive to these things merely because they were of the opposite gender.
His ears perked slightly, eyes lighting up as she mentioned a brother. To Iah, it was gratifying to have assurance that there were, in fact, more males around. "I see." He said thoughtfully.
"Mother says I should be glad I have so many sisters." He confessed. "And to be frank, they are pretty alright, I don't exactly see why."

"Me neither." She looked positively puzzled at this; had anyone ever said something like that to Utunzo? If they had, he'd never shared it with her, that was for sure..
"Maybe.. It's because you'll always be protected?" It was a complete shot in the dark, but it was worth a try. Anything was, in Ukene's mind.

He blinked at her curiously. "I thought I was supposed to be the one protecting them." It made sense, didn't it? The males were supposed to protect the females, he should be protecting them, taking into account that he was a lion and he was the eldest among them.
"So...you protect your brother?" He asked slowly. That might be the reason she had said that.

"You are?" She imitated his befuddled blinking, once again lost from the conversation. Though she did suppose that the great heroes from her mother's stories were often males - it just wasn't something Ukene had ever thought about.
"Oh! No, no, no, nooo." That'd be hard to say; "Utunzo is the one who finds me when I get lost. I get lost a lot. Like, a lot." She smiled sheepishly. "But Upenzi helps me too! They both do. I don't help them much though, at least I don't think I do.. But I love them and that's all that counts, right?"

"I'm the oldest." He pointed out, a slight hint of impatience in his voice. Perhaps that it was that she wasn't really bright that annoyed him, or it could be due to his questions not being answered yet.
And he was oh so curious about it, especially since his parents were vague on the matter.
"Yeah." He nodded. "However...annoying my sisters can be sometimes, they're still family." Iah admitted grudgingly.

"And family's important. Really important." She nodded decisively, looking far more serious and determined than she had in the course of their entire conversation.
"Maybe.. maybe it doesn't matter if you're a boy or a girl or the oldest or the youngest, maybe you should just protect family no matter what? Or try, I guess, because you can't always protect them, I mean, if they get attacked by a herd of elephants or something, there's probably not a whole lot you can do, although I don't think elephants attack people all that often and not without cause anyway, that's what my mom said - or was it Upenzi? Maybe someone else - so maybe they deserved it and you should just leave it alone." She stopped, brow furrowed: "I'm confused."

The thought that she was, at last, making some sense flickered into his mind, though briefly, as the cub tried to follow her train of thought and failed, getting as confused as she was.
"Do you mean," he said after an awkward silence had passed and he had thought for a while, "that elephants won't attack someone for no reason?"

"Yes! I think." She thought for a second before adding: "It sounds like something I'd say anyway, doesn't it?"

"Maybe." He shrugged. He didn't know her well enough to know how she was like, but she definitely had some special quirks.
"Sooooo, who are your parents?" The cub asked, flopping on the ground, his belly staring up at the sky while blue eyes regarded her curiously. "Mine are hunters."
