Keen on being out in the night, on seeing the Great Lion and the stars very clearly and all by herself.. Amalthea had snuck away in the evening with the intention of not coming back until much later. She didn't understand why they didn't function entirely in the dark if it was when the Great Lion was watching, but soon decided he must function like a night guard of sorts. They could take care of themselves in the sunlight, when they could see everything.. but at night, he was there to watch them and so they could safely rest! It was like having daddy around, he kept them safe. She knew enough about pride tradition so she kept it to herself, but to her, he was a great lion.
Were she smarter in her adventure, she would have kept her tail low and hidden in the grass. It was the brightest part of her fur and she might otherwise go undetected. Unfortunately for her, it was stuck high in the air as she marched along, trying to remember her way to the very best stargazing spot she had picked out before.

Ukene had been studying the Great Lion's form from on top of a convenient rock formation, reciting everything she'd learned from Mitsuki today in her mind when she noticed the yellow - was it yellow? The Great Lion was bright, but light colours were still a bit hard to distinguish in His light - tuft bopping along the tall grass. How funny! She watched with great interest, identifying the thing as a tail after some scrutiny. But a tail that tiny.. that meant whoever owned the tail had to be a cub, or at least a juvenile, right? Or maybe a mini-lion - did mini-lions exist, or was it just something she'd thought of somewhen? In either case, she really ought to check it out, didn't she? Maybe the youth was lost and scared and just wanted its mama! With that thought in mind, Ukene waited until the tail was a bit closer to her resting spot before softly clearing her throat and waiting for the owner to notice her. It wouldn't do to give someone a heart-attack after all.

Amalthea was scurrying along happily, unaware that she had been spotted- until she heard the sound of someone clearing their throat, a typical indication that she was doing something wrong. She half expected to look up and see her daddy, but when her head poked up out of the grass to get a better view, she spotted an unusual lioness staring at her. Her pale eyes widened and she stared first, then looked around nervously.
"Hi!" she exclaimed, deciding to just be nice and see if she could get away without actually getting into any trouble.

"Hi!" Ukene beamed, happy that the little cub (she'd been right! Victory dance!) didn't seem to be in any sort of distress, if not a little nervous. But friendly! And friendly was always good.
"What are you doing out here? It's very late you know, and even if He is watching over you you should be in your bed with your siblings, sleeping, not running around out here where you could get lost." It was recited with much care and no fervor at all, being actually what Zizi had told her daughter (more or less) when she used to find her wandering around similarly when she was younger. But it didn't seem like the cub's parents were around to say it, so Ukene felt that the slight scolding fell to her, if not somewhat uncomfortably. But that was a part of being an adult, right? And she'd been trying so hard to be more adult, more like her siblings and the other lions in the pride and less like herself - even if it was a constant struggle and made her more miserable than anything else.

Amalthea managed to keep on smiling until Ukene questioned her about what she was doing out all by herself. She was a bad judge of age, in her mind Ukene was as much of an adult as any of the adults she knew. Her ears turned, but she tried not to frown, instead smiling sheepishly.
"I- I'm allowed to be out here!" she said suddenly, a bit louder than she intended, "Daddy said it was OK, he did." It was a lie, but it was the best she had. Maybe she wouldn't know who her daddy was, maybe she wouldn't bother following up, either way.. Amalthea just wanted to go and find her spot to look at the moon.
She glanced around nervously.
"I'm just going to moon-watch, I'm not going far," she said defensively.

"Really?" Well, if her father had given her permission.. obviously it was okay! Still though, she was kind of a tiny little thing (or maybe Ukene just wasn't entirely used to being as large as she was now) and she might get lost in the grass. It'd happened to the older lioness often enough at that age, that was for sure.
"Are you sure you won't get, you know, lost or something? I would, I mean, if I was tiny like you are - well, I was and I did get lost very often, and I think that was what I meant. Don't you? It makes sense, though, somewhat, right? I think so, I think." She didn't pause to wait for a reply from the younger lioness. "And getting lost can be very scary, unless you've got siblings to find you, 'cause siblings always find you when you're lost, so if you've got siblings you don't really need to worry. Do you have siblings?"

Staring up with wide, pale eyes and then she sat down. This was a strange adult, she spoke quickly and a lot. Amalthea opened her mouth to comment when Ukene said she might get lost, that she had when she was so small, and asked if it made sense-- but she was given no chance to respond and she closed her mouth once again. When she started off about siblings, Amalthea made a face and this time didn't bother trying to respond. Until Ukene stopped and waited, a clear sign this time she did want an answer. Jumping when she realized it, Amalthea got back to her feet and nodded very seriously.
"Yes, I do!" she said honestly, "I have two sisters, Hecate and Kallisto, and a brother, Atlas. Did you have siblings to find you?"

"That's awesome!" The older lioness beamed enthusiastically at the small cub. "You've got waaay more siblings than me."
"I did! I have Utunzo and Upenzi and they're really, really good at finding me when I'm lost. Except I don't get lost so often these days, but I used to. What's your name? Mine's Ukene, and I'm an apprentice midwife! Your siblings have very awesome names so you probably do too, right?"

Amalthea was surprised when she realized they had introduced their siblings before introducing themselves, and she giggled. The names of Ukene and her siblings were funny, too! They all had U-named. That was neat! Her siblings didn't have anything like that, not that Amalthea knew about anyway.
"I'm Amalthea!" she introduced herself brightly, "I'm not anything yet, I'm just a cub. What's an apprentice midwife do?" She tilted her head curiously. She had a vague concept of a midwife, daddy did his best to teach them, but this wasn't something she, as a cub, understood completely.

The older lioness grinned happily, proud that she'd guessed correctly; the little cub's name was just as awesome as those of her siblings'!
"But a cub is still something, isn't it?" Her voice was a bit confused, but it was quickly lost as they moved on - finally something she knew about! Ukene puffed up, looking every bit as adult and serious and knowledgeable as she knew how to: "An apprentice midwife is a midwife in training who follows around her senior and observes the techniques and duties of a proper midwife. When she's not doing that, she gets taught the basics by her mentor until said mentor deems her ready to move on to harder things."
She paused, having forgotten the rest of the speech that she'd tried to memorize days ago. "But I haven't helped with a birth yet or anything, I'm mostly getting taught stuff about the Great Lion and, uh, stuff." She thought for a moment: "How to act around pregnant lionesses, too, though I'm not all that good at that - not that I really-really know or anything, since I haven't actually met any yet, but when the day comes I'll be prepared!"

"I guess so, but it's not anything a-special," she said, tilting her head. She was very curious about what she would grow up to be, she didn't have the luxury of being able to plan ahead, her family did not know what rank they would be.
She stared up at Ukene when she used a lot of big words to describe what she does, she didn't figure it out until she said she hasn't helped with a birth yet. That was what midwives did. She remembered now!
"Neat!" Amalthea said enthusiastically, deciding that she could share more information about herself with Ukene being so chatty and seeming so honest and interested, "My daddy says we just have to learn how to take care of ourselves and everything about the pride so when we get big we'll be ready when we get our classes."

She nodded along quite vigorously: "I think your daddy's right! Because that sounds reasonable, doesn't it? I mean, then you'd be all prepared and everyone else who'd just been slacking off -" Ukene hadn't cottoned on to the fact that that was the sort of thing every cub learned yet, " - they'll be all like, you know, 'whooooah, you're awesome!' and you can be all 'why yes, yes I am!' and that'd be completely awesome wouldn't it? I've always wanted to say 'why yes', but it doesn't really come up when you're chatting with people, so you gotta plan ahead and take your opportunities before they present themselves. I think."

"Yeah," she said, initially losing a bit of her enthusiasm but Ukene was surprisingly good at keeping a cheerful mood in the conversation, "I guess." She giggled at the idea of planning ahead for comebacks and comments to tell to people. She didn't know what she could say except..
"You're awesome!" Amalthea said carefully, grinning.

Ukene beamed so hard she swore she could feel her maw cracking. "You really think so? No-one's ever thought I was awesome before! Except for me, but I don't think I really count." She nodded with a pseudo-solemn mine; "You, my friend, are fantastically awesome as well. Totally!" She couldn't resist grinning again, feeling the stress evaporate in the face of what was looking to be a new friendship.

Amalthea giggled at Ukene's response, glad to have made her happy but also amused it was not the response she expected. She was very cheery now, though, and pleased that she had decided to sneak out. Except now she felt bad having lied to Ukene. Her ears turned but she kept on smiling.
"I- I should probably go back home," she muttered, not outwardly admitting she had lied but clearly feeling guilty.
