I saw a video once where a guy came home to his family after *spoiler* and he had two kids, one was a little boy, and the other was a pre-teen/teenage girl. Significantly taller! How is this possible?

I was really hoping that the game would let your kids grow up to be adults and go on quest with you.

Whatever you saw was certainly a glitch of some sort. The only stages your child can go to is from baby to 9 year old.
