So my friend Time Bomb and I were talking about out the outfits we're wearing to the Manchester Orchestra concert (!!). She asked what jeans Im wearing and I said "these ones" Now her mom argues that the term 'these ones' is not correct. But like, everyone says it. I think its fine. It's like saying 'which ones?' right? What do you think?

"these ones" should be right since jeans is a "pair" like "a pair of jeans"
so it's like saying you're going to wear a pair of shoes. you'd say "I'm wearing these shoes" not "I'm wearing this shoe" since it sounds like you're only wearing it on one foot?
I dunno, I suck at grammar. "these ones" sounds weird but it's probably correct.
why does it matter? is the mom a grammar nazi?

No that I know of. she just doesn't think its correct.
Maybe you were supposed to say "this one"? I'm not sure though, I wasn't an English major. Why are pants considered a pair anyway, when there's only one of them? =/

In my experience with the fashion industry, I have heard people say "pant" when referring to one. I don't know. I think it sounds weird. "The length on this pant is off." "These" sounds alright to me.
I just sounds weird because you said "these ones"... "one" being plural doesn't seem right at all... cause you know it is one. But I say "these ones" too.

I wouldn't think "this one" would make sense since in english, pants are considered a pair.. Whereas in french it's A pant... hm.

"These ones" is a bit awkward. "These jeans" would work. Or "This pair." Or just "These" and indicate the jeans you wish to wear.
As long as your friend knew what you were talking about, that's all that matters. Like Salmay said, "this pair" would work too if you really want to get picky about it.

It should probably technically be "this pair of pants." Still, it gets tiring trying to remember stuff like that. For example, I know I use "me" a lot when I should technically use "I." For example, I might say, "Me and Sally are going to the store," when I should say, "Sally and I are going to the store." xp
By itself, there’s nothing wrong with the word “ones” as a plural: “surrounded by her loved ones.” However, “this one” should not be pluralized to “these ones.” Just say “these.”
you should of said these, or this pair, or this one.

Hn... you learn something new every day. Now I'm going to think of that every time I say "these ones." xd
@Neiina: That's kinda interesting..... but then why are knickers and trousers pairs? Men didn't wear pantaloons back then (or did they? XD ). Undergarments get even more confusing from there D; The English language is really screwy gonk
I hate the english language! it's so confusing! T____T all the asian languages are literal, why can't we use that? noooo, we have to be fancy with words and have like a gazillion words that mean the exact same thing. why do we need grammar anyway? laaammeee :/
