I recently went and very thoroughly looked through a book I was given at christmas time.
I looked at the yarn weights and I was confused. It used a 0-6 system of which yarn weights to use. I am going I know of only 4 weights of yarn, Baby, Sprot, Worsted, Bulky. and this equation
2 baby to 1 sport
2 sport to 1 worsted
2 worsted to 1 bulky.

Can anyone help me?

If you take a look in ravelry you'll see that they use several different yarn weights. And to make matters even more confusing yarn weights are called different things in different countries too...

Cobweb (1 ply)
Lace (2 ply)
Light fingering (3 ply)
Fingering (4 ply)
Sport (5 ply)
DK ( 8 ply)
Worsted (10 ply)
Aran (10 ply)
Bulky (12 ply)
Super bulky

I found this handy cart: http://www.ravelry.com/help/yarn/weights?highlight=4
You'll probably need to be a member to see it, but it's totally worth the short wait to join ravelry.

Nice chart. smile Didn't know Ravelry had one of those. And to confuse matters even more, there are a lot of yarns that seem to fall inbetween weights. I can think of a few off the top of my head that are a bit too thick to be DK, but not thick enough to be a true Worsted weight.

And as to that equation, whenever I've held fingering weight yarn double, I get a worsted gauge.
