Faerth I'm putting together a travel-sized altar, for a trip I'm going on. So, I was thinking of having 5 five candles in there (one for every element), along with one of every color available in my favorite shop. So, for the five element candles, I was thinking of getting 4 gold, and 1 silver OR 4 silver and 1 gold. The one in opposing color would stand for spirit. So, what do you think I should choose? EDIT;; I'll post a pic of it once it's all done, for you all to see :3
What path do you practice, first off? I'm assuming Wicca-flavoured ecclectic neo-paganism in the rest of my reply, but feel free to correct me.
Is this travel altar for ritual or just for spellcrafting? I'm addressing it as if it's for ritual, but again, correct me if I'm wrong and I'll work from there.
Why metallic candles for the elements? The elements each have three colours of their own already. Gold and silver are usually used only to represent a God or Goddess, but even if you were using them for the elements, consider that Gold is usually considered masculine and solar, and Silver feminine and lunar. The elements themselves are split between masculine and feminine, so using one colour for all four really wouldn't be the most appropriate thing.
You could also carry a small vial of water, salt/earth, one red candle, and an incense cone or stick, and there's your four elements covered.
Are you planning to have Deity candles as well as Spirit? Because it's sort of redundant. Calling Spirit, then invoking the Gods in ritual...effectively means you've called the Gods twice. The Gods represent Spirit by themselves.
That being said, if you're not calling a specific Deity (or Deities), just invoking a generic, solitary 'Spirit', then a white candle is probably your best choice. White candles are a suitable replacement for any need, if you can't get the colour of your choice.
If you do call a God and Goddess, white or gold for him and black or silver for her is appropriate. You may also substitute colours relating to the time of year or appropriate to a specific God or Goddess, but if you're just looking for a kit that's sort of ready to go whenever and whatever your need, black and white or gold and silver are your safest bets.
