Just curious: would anyone actually buy one of these? I wouldn't even think about shooting a 500 without at least a 4" barrel, call me a pansy if you wish. The other survival gear included is kind of neat, but the $1,500 pricetage is the slightest bit offputting. I'll take the JIC over that any day.

My grandpa told me that you can kill a bear with a .22 if you shoot them in the stomach after they have eaten since the stomach will produce so much gas which will ignite and blow up his stomach. I don't know how true that is, but it made for a good story.

Yeah, the most effective bear deterrent according to the Alaskan Forest Service is a 12-gauge slug. Bear mace is half again more effective, though.
@Rommel: Sounds like bullshit.

Like I said it makes for an amusing story. If it isn't real I assume it's either him senile or him mistaken in science and anatomy and what not or both. He's not the kind of guy that tells bullshit stories like that to sound impressive. Also: Thermite is a good bear deterrent.

12 gauge slugs with alternating buckshot is apparently what works.
But if you're hunting bear, apparently 7mm works great.

I've seen those at the local shops, neat little kits. I've held one of the longer barreled .460's, not that it really matters...
A .500 S&W shooting a 400 grain slug is clocking 1,140 FPS out of a 2.5" barrel, and 1,450 out of a 4" barrel. I certainly wouldn't feel undergunned with one (of course, I haven't been in this situation), and for some people, a shotgun might be too bulky.
That's nothing to sneeze at. I've 20 units of .500 brass that this guy left behind, they're huge.

The shotgun one sounds enticing, but I'm not sure I want to fire it without a stock.

Would be nice if you could get one with a folding stock though. Like the SPAS-12. But last i knew they were illegal to import because of the militaristic look! scream

It's not even that awesome in comparison to other, perfectly legal shotguns.

Yeah, they definitely make 'em for the Mossberg. But, at the moment, I am finding that removing the stock is a bit more difficult than I bargained. Too much loctite.
