Chaka'Jua

As the sun sets and the moon rises in the sky so too does the pride. Though they are all one they are broken up into three parts, all working in harmoney for the better good. Though the river that cuts through their lives keeps them seperated the Chaka, Mwezi and the Umepatwa are all one unit. Between the parted sides of the Chaka and the Mwezi, living on an island in the center of the river are the Umepatwa. They are the rulers, made up of a council which helps govern the two sides and keep everyone in check. They are a strong pride and generally distrusting of outsiders. They do not think harshly or hate members of their apposing sides. Sometimes familys will be split depending on color to be raised accordingly under either the sun or the moon. Everyone has their place.

Mwezi

The Mwezi rise and set with the moon in the sky, purely nocturnal they have coats to match the night sky. Various dark hues with very few bright colors with the exception of silvers, the very embodyment of their lunar mother. They follow the moons cycle, taking special note of the full moon and following the sky spirt through her waxing and waning process. The time of the new moon is very sacrid and often times much prayer is done during this time to help insure that their moon will return to the sky in the following nights.

Chaka

The Chaka live their lives in the way of the sun, they rise with it and set with it and all of them have brightly colored pelts. They live in the way of the sun and respect and worship the light of the day. The rise with the sun and go down with it as well. Sleeping during the night when the sun is no longer in the sky. Anyone born with a sun like marking is said to be blessed by the sun itself.

Umepatwa

The Umepatwa are the counsil of chosen lions that are the embodyment of both sides, the sun and the moon. Every few years a lion from the Chaka and a Lion and from the Mwezi are chosen by the Preists/ess of the pride and brought together to mate. Reguardless if they already have a family, this is a calling of the sky spirits and beyond any mortal love. The children of this pairing will then be brought up to rule the two sides and live in the island. When the children are grown enough to taken the position of council leaders after they have past their purity tests the old council leaders are then sacrificed to bring joy to the lands and return their spirits to the sky.

Traditions

The traditions of the Chaka'jua are many, they are a pride of rules and if those rules are broken there can be punishements as grave as death. Some othe traditions will be outlined here as follows:

Right of passage: - (for the moment we are not worried about this until the pride is established and active)
Generally distrusting of outsiders the Chaka'jua are an isolated group. If someone wishes to join the pride then they must prove themself to the sky spirits. If they are brightly colored they will endure the test of the sun. One must fast for a week and then set off across the desert towards the base of the mountains. Upon their return they must bring back with them a flower from the base of that mountain that is rumored only to grow there. If they make it back alive in the heat of the desert then they are proven worthy.

For the Mwezi and those of dark coat colors the right is a little different. Under the night sky they must fast and starve themselves when the moon is full then they are lead to the river where they must sit with the water beating down upon them until the moon shows them a great personal truth which must be reveled to the Priests. If this is judged a real personal truth, then the moon has blessed them with the inner glimps of themself and they are judged worthy.

Arranged Marriages: All marriages are arranged, if you join the pride then the clan leader arranges who you marry and all cubs are assigned males. No one finds out who they are arranged to marry until they are adolescence. If a lion finds out before they are adolescent the clan leader will then find someone else for the two lions and the parents are punished. Mates are only in the same clan you do not see or meet the clan on the other side of the river unless you are picked for the 'chosen litter'.

Cubs: If a litter is born they will be taken to the clan leader where they will be judged. If the cub is more of a Chaka colour then they will be taken via the messengers to the Chaka clan where they will be raised by a nanny or vice versa. If a cub is born that is neutral in colouring then they are taken to the Umepatwa where they will be brought up and trained to be a messenger.

Colouring: This is very important. Night coloured lions are part of the Mwezi and day coloured lions are part of the Chaka. If they don't fit they are a messenger. Silver and gray are night colours, white is a day colour.

The Chosen Lions: - (Will be given a better name later)
These are the lions who are picked at a ceremony to breed together to create the new leaders. These lions are taken to the Umepatwa where they spend time together until both couples have a litter. Once the cubs are weaned the lions go back to their clans and their lives. They are picked before the ceremony by the group of seers who spend the night listening to the sun and moon to know who it is who needs to be picked. The lions will be randomized via a randomizer.

The Chosen Litter: - (Will be given a better name when we find one)
The Chosen Litter are the two litters that come from the 'Chosen Lions'. The cubs are brought up on the island. The Head Seer will then hear from the Sun and Moon and pick from the litter the new clan leaders and the two new peacekeepers. All the cubs are taught together as the rest of the litters make up the council. These litters are seen as a blessing and are cherished by the pride.

Sacrifices: Sacrifices are something that happen quite often as all leaders and council members are sacrificed. When the chosen litter reaches adulthood and have passed their Rights of Passage they then take over. When they take their place as leaders and the new council is in place, the old leaders and council members are sacrificed to the sky spirits.

Council's blessing If for some reason a young one in the pride grows to adult with out a chosen mate or if a rogue joins the pride and wishes to mate within it they can only do so with the blessing of the council, which will make sure the union is blessed by the sky spirits.

Positions

Posistions currently needing to be filled:

The Peace Keepers are picked by the seers from the 'chosen litters'. They are mates and keep the peace in the pride. They are the head of the council. (Will probably be customed)

Chosen ones these are the other cubs from the litter - most go on to be part of the council. (These will come later on when there is a litter)

Sun Ruler there is only one ruler and they are picked from the Chosen Litter (will be made and most likely rp contested)

Moon Ruler there is only one ruler and they are picked from the Chosen Litter (will be made and most likely ro contested)

Messengers live on the Island with the council. They run errands, pick up the cubs and move them to the right clans and also pass messages to the other clans. They are all good swimmers.

Hunters they hunt - both clans have them

Guards they patrol the borders, both clans have them and the guards are the only ones up at times different to the norm of the clan so the Chaka guards will have some patrolling at night and the Mwezi guards will have some patrolling during the day.

Nannys are incredibly important. They look after the cubs that are brought to the clan leaving their parents and family. They are also needed to look after the Chosen Litter though the lions in charge of them are generally the messengers who can't swim and so are given duties on the island.

Assassains are like the police. They are trained on the island before returning to their clans where they are to watch and make sure all the traditions are being held. They also carry out punishment which is a range of things including death.

Advisors are the council members and are generally from the Chosen Litter unless a lion impresses their clan leader enough to be suggested for the position.

Healers they are the ones who look after the sick and hurt. They are in both clans and on the island.

Priests/seers they aren't necessarily seers. They are believed to have a close relationship with the sun and moon and the sky spirits.

Punishments

With strong traditions come strong punishments for those who break them. Some are more leaniant while others result in death.

Adultery- If a lion/ess is caught having a 'fling' or 'affair' on their chosen mate the punishment is death. If the affair results in cubs then the cubs will be raised into adulthood. At the time in which they are themselves adults the entire family is brought before the council, if the parent wishes to live must kill their now adult children. If they hestitate for even a moment it is the assassins job to quickly kill the parent and the children will be allowed to live.

Telling the name of the mate- If a parent tells a young cub/juve/adol who they are selected to be mated with before it is time then that arrangment is then desolved. The council then will choose a mate for them as the parents have proven unworthy of this task. This is a dishonor.

Harming a fellow Pride Member: The assassins will mark you with what you did to the other lion - so if you gave him a scar they would give you an identical one.

Killing a Pride Member: The Assassins kill you.

-more to come-

Family Life

Family life is very important to the pride. You don't choose your mate, even if you are a rogue joining you are given a mate if you want one. If you join the pride mated then as long as you are in the same clan you are allowed to stay together, if you are then put in different clans, chances are you won't see each other so you will be given a different mate.

Mates are allowed to breed whenever they want. It is highly encouraged! Adolescents aren't allowed to breed as they have only found out who their mates are and so are expected to get to know each other and get use to each other before starting a family.

When the cubs are born they are taken to the clan leader where they are blessed and then named. If the cubs are all the right colour for the clan the family are then allowed to return to their den however if the cubs don't fit the clan colour the family stay with the clan leader until the cubs are weaned and then the cubs are taken to the clan they fit in where they are brought up by a nanny. This isn't an unusual thing and the pride believe that you are blessed with what you have and so as far as the parents are aware their cubs could be blessed to do great things in another clan. It is not often that the cubs that have moved clan will see their birth family again.

When the parents have picked future mates for their cubs they are to tell the clan leader and this is kept from the cubs until they are adolescent which is when there is a ceremony for the mates to meet each other and then leave together to find their own dens.

Mates stay together for life.

You are not allowed to cheat on your mate at all, it is an unforgivable crime and makes you unclean. The only time you can sleep with someone other then your mate is if you are chosen to create the new leaders in which case this is an honor and your duty.

Sacrifices

Sacrifices happen for two reasons - one to give back to them the gifts they gave the pride or for cleanliness.

All leaders get sacrificed. When the new leaders take up their roles the old ones are sacrificed by the priests. This is where they return to the spirits the gifts originally given to them. They believe the Chosen Litter are the spirits in a lions body which is why they are the only ones who generally have the higher positions and so by sacrificing them they are allowing the spirits to return and the pride believe that this means they are gifting the spirits. This is a huge event that takes place on the most open end of the island so that both clans can see the sacrificing. After the sacrifice the new leaders are appointed and a celebration follows.

Sacrifices also happen for cleanliness. Sometimes if you do something wrong you will be asked to sacrifice someone this is generally only used when adultery happens. You must sacrifice yourself, or if cubs come from the forbidden union you must bring them up knowing that when they reach adulthood you must sacrifice them. This is a choice you have, you must either sacrifice yourself or your litter. The assassins will kill you if a hesitate for a second when it comes to killing your litter.

Also if you are from the Chosen Litter and you fail the Rights of Passage then you are given the opportunity to sacrifice yourself or to take up the place as a nanny for the next Chosen Litter. They are given the choice as it would be more shameful to stay alive then to die.
