We all know the classic Cold War rifles: M-16, FN FAL, and AK-47. These are all good rifles, but which one is the best design? Is it the M-16, the classic and sext jungle carbine? The big, bad, and powerful FAL? Or could it be the rugged and dependable Kalashnikov?

One note. Please keep this conversation confined to the Cold War production models of these weapons. If I start hearing talk about the M16A4 and AK-100 series I am gonna be pissed. Those weapons are not relavent to the discussion. To be clear, the Cold War lasted from 1945-48 (depending on who you talk to) to 1991. Anything made after 1991 is totally irrelevant to this discussion.

'91? But the Wall fell in '89.

Of those three, I'd have to go for the M16A2. The A1 was a pile of s**t, but the A2 was heavily refined into a weapon comparable to the A4 rifles of today. The only thing the A4 has on it is rail space, and neither of the other two choices have that anyway.

I typed a lot here, but got sidetracked into comparing this debate to 9mm v. .45 and 1911 v. Beretta. In a nutshell, I don't think it's fair to compare three things that are completely different. It's like comparing the Lord of the Rings trilogy to the Matrix trilogy. The difference isn't just subjective (which is better?), it's that they're both completely different movies. Apples and oranges, Fords and Chevys, whatever you want to relate it to.

I'm not giving my opinion on the superior rifle because I don't think any are absolutely better than the others.

But I must admit I know substantially more about the AK and M16 than about the FN FAL.

I give the FAL a head over the others, because it is not a piddly assault rifle, it is a BATTLE rifle!
It is in a full-fledged rifle caliber, not an intermediate caliber.

Really though, each have their own "specialties" and aren't comparable.
All of them have compromises.
All of them have different pros and cons.

I am just biased in the way of the FAL, because It's awesome to shoot. If I could afford it, I would buy one. I might just do that at $100 a month for 14 months.

Let me just say that you didn't specify which M16 we were voting for. The A1 is automatic, but the A2 only has a three round burst. Either way, I voted for the AK-47. They are very reliable and, unlike the M16s, have the options to be semi-auto, three shot bursts, or fully auto.

Does the AUG count? Because if it does that's what I'm voting for.

And you forgot the M14.

Eh. M14 isnt really a classic Cold War rifle. It's a nice gun, if a little heavy. The FAL, AK, and 16 are the three classic ones. The G3 and AUG just don't have the same fame, and the M14 wasn't widely used. Personally I like the AUG over pretty much any other rifle, but it doesn't qualify for a position on the list.

Any cold war model M16 is acceptable to vote for.

Since when?
I wanna say Poland made a model with 3 round burst, but it might have been a 74 variant. Speaking of the 74, that has more of a cold war feel to it to me, because it was developed to compete with the M16 series of weapons that uses a smaller, faster round. Doesn't matter, P90 for the win! Haha! See what I did there?

IIRC, the -74 had a 2-round burst, and was controlled by PULLEYS. It was loathed for being impossible to clean, and needlessly complicated. Or maybe I'm thinking of another rifle...

The AN-94 is the ugliest of the AK cousins.
Also, the AK-74s are pretty cool, especially the ones in 5.45x39 which I think is all of them so yeah.
