She woke from her sleep and blinked the bleariness from her eyes, finding comfort in the dark earth and the warmth it offered when the nights were cold and dark.
Then she stretched and immediately regretted it. The pains in her forelegs, that often had her limping, had grown worse these past few days and the twinge in them had her growling with surprise and pain. Her defect was a reminder of what a poor state her mother had been in when she had been pregnant.
A state brought about by those horrible, horrible lions.
Though...she kept seeing that little golden face. That cub...all alone.
She drew in a breath and shook each leg gently in turn, helping to ease the pain that would - it seemed - be with her for life.

Tope had been out early that morning. He was resltess and couldn't sleep so decided for a morning hunt. He knew Jini's legs weren't cooperating lately, so he wouldn't mind getting them some breakfast. He had left her about an hour ago and in that short time-he had his heart torn.
His fathers Genet had found him and told him the news of his parent's death's. He was shocked, sad but not so much so that he would show it. He was happy they passed almost together and that they could spend an eternity together now... he just regretted not seeing his father one more time.
He padded back to their sleeping area, his head a bit low hanging. No kill.

Jini'pomoka knew the tread of her mate's paws and knew, then, that he was returning home. With a slight grunt, she pulled herself up into the sunshine and stepped away from the den to greet him, chuffing happily at the sight of him.
But then...what was this? He looked...sad.
He had no kill with him, so perhaps that was the reason, and yet...
She limped slowly towards him, intending to meet him half way, her head and tail parallel with her spine.
"Tope? Love?" Her voice was gentle and enquiring.

Tope spotted his beautiful mate and almost couldn't keep his tears from flowing. But he kept his head high and his mouth shut. He padded to her, not saying anything at first but just wanted her against his chest. He took a moment, his chin over her shoulders, as shutters came and went. He took a few breaths.
"Jini... My Fathers genet traveled all the way from the pride lands to find us... to tell me that... they passed on." He said softly, his pink eyes shut. There was so much he wanted to say to his parents... to apologize to his father. "I-I can't believe it..."

She could feel her chest clenching, her heart squeezing painfully. Something was wrong, and the panic and pain that it brought hurt her very being. And yet...she sensed that she shouldn't push him to speak. Something had shaken him and it was best to keep her own worries to herself until he felt ready.
She pressed against him, waiting for him to calm, feeling her own body quiver slightly, afraid of what he might say.
And then he spoke...
The world as she knew it came to a sudden halt, drawing away from her until it was just the two of them, trapped in a cold, empty place where nothing could reach them. His parents...dead. Gone forever. Taken from him without giving him a chance to say goodbye. The tears came unbidden to her eyes and she pressed her head against his fur, trying to be strong for him. It was hard...hard to lose a parent. She still grieved for the loss of her own mother and that had happened oh so long ago now.
"Love..." She finally managed to croak. "I...I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry." She pressed tighter to him as if the contact might help make things better. "I'm so sorry..." Her voice had become a whisper now...saddened and hopeless. Death...death was a terrible thing.
"Dear Tope...I'm so sorry..." She shut her eyes and a tear rolled free.
What else could she say? No words could make his pain go away nor bring them back.

Tope felt so much sadness in him. He was sure Ardhi was with them the whole time and was content with that thought but the fact they were gone still hurt. He clenched her against him, silent for a while. He knew how Jini felt in a way, losing her mother like that... even though he had never known sadness from death.. and now he did. He felt as though he was closer to her because of it. "Don't be... they are together forever now... I am sure of it... Mother and Father probably are going back to the swamps, even though they were exiles I am sure their spirits will be allowed back in..."
He sniffed, holding his love against her. "I am sure Ardhi stayed with them the whole time... I will have to go to him soon... but now that the cubs are grown it shouldn't be too bad without me for a little while. I probably will bring Ardhi back with me... for his own safety. He has those shaking fits and I don't want him alone while he has them..." He sniffed.

She pressed her wet face against him, her sorrow heightened by the memory of the day she had lost her own parent. Tope was right. This tragic news had most certainly seemed to bind them closer - so quickly, too.
"Yes." She agreed quietly. "I'm certain of it. Nothing can bind a spirit. It is free. So free. They're back home." She held him a little tighter, nodding as she realised that he must go. Family was so important and Ardhi could not be left to suffer this alone. He needed the strength of family, too.
"If you can, bring him back. There's a home here for him, love." She paused. "I shall stay here and keep an eye on the children. Ruia...he's getting fidgety and if he wants to leave, I need to keep him here until you return so he can say a proper goodbye."
She sniffed and a new tear fell. "Oh, love. Life is so hard sometimes..."

Tope nodded. He was fully intending on bringing Ardhi back, there was no way his brother would be able to stay with his grief. He nodded, knowing that soon his children would want to be on their own and without their parents... but the decision now was that, were they going to start another family? He swallowed, not wanting to talk about that right now, now that his parents were gone.
He stood, though stayed touching her. "Our cubs are so big now...I had always intended to take them to see their grandparents... but I suppose it is too late now..." He said, knowing he'd regret it forever. "But... now my parents can see them as they thrive and grow."

She nodded weakly. No grandparents....no grandparents at all. Not on her side of the family and not on his. She suddenly felt so alone - though that was far from the truth - and a choked sob broke free.
The old hate and anger towards those that killed her mother reignited, briefly reminding her why she and Tope had done what they had done. It had been a long time since she had felt that hate and somehow it comforted her. An odd thing indeed.
"They can. They'll always be there. Always. I know it. They can't just dissapear. I refuse to believe that." She touched her head to his shoulder. "Your brother....he'll be glad to see you and I would love to meet him. It would be nice to have some extended family here with us."

Tope nodded. "I think you will like him. He is shy but one of my closest friends. I sometimes feel as though I may have severed our ties when I left but... I hope to reunite them when I go too him." He said, standing up and nodding his head. "I should go now... I don't want to waist any time... he needs me... he needs us."
He looked down to her. "Will you be alright until I return... " He asked, a teasing smile on his face. "I hate to leave your side..." He added, his ears flicking for it was true.

She smiled warmly, reaching up again to touch her nose to his. Then, with a soft smile, she drew back from him and nodded, gesturing out across the wild lands away from home.
"Don't worry, love. I'll be here when you get back. I will be waiting for you." She closed her eyes, drew in a deep breath and then, with a wider smile, she gazed upon him with her vibrant pink eyes.
"Distance makes the heart grow fonder, or so they say. We'll be together again soon and all the better for it."

Tope took the initiative to leave and started off. It would be the first time they had been apart in so long. Since all the drama and the sorrow; since they had left together to go to the sand pride, to the firekin and to the destruction and chaos they had cause. To the birth of their children. Always together. He sighed, looking over his shoulder too her before winking.
"Be back soon my love!" He called with a more cheerful tone, sending himself off with a rather skippy step and prance. He was a little excited though, to be off on his own once again like he had so long ago wished he was like. Now, it would only be a fun... and would bring his brother Ardhi back home with them.
Ardhi... Oh how he missed his dark brother. He began to get excited and with a holler he rounded a bend and was gone from sight.
If only for a short while!
