I thought there was a discussion thread about him here, but I guess there isn't xP

Love him. He's a fabulous composer, and conductor.
My favorite piece ever of his is Blue Shades.

I don't like Blue Shades.. :/ It sounds like every other contempory jazz/bandish tune. He and Brian Balmages are clones. I hate band. [/hater rant]

I am rather fond of Frank Tichelli, as I have many of my first concert band pieces were his. We used to do at least one every year smile

Ticheli's music is fun to play. I wouldn't listen to or play his pieces for fun outside of school, but when we play them in school band they're always fun.
I've played Abracadabra, Joy, Joy Revisited, and Loch Lomond.

I hate to be "that guy" that comments on old posts that are outdated but I just joined and I HAD to comment on this. Frank Tichelli is by far one of my favorite composers. An American Elegy gives me chills every time i hear it..It's such a beautiful song how can it not bring tears to your eyes! R.I.P students of Columbine crying . And also, Vesuvius...enough said XD.

I always knew him as a band composer. This year in my festival chorus music, I found "Earth Song" by Frank. Its decent. Not the same power as he has with instruments, but it is a well written piece.

wow! no one here has ever heard of The Tyger by him? my band played it for competitions this season...it was really creepy...and there's basically no melody. at all...but it's an amazing song smile

I agree, it's nice the clarinets have the melody, but it seems to repeat and sounds like an a typical tune from the transition to the big band erra, basically 1940s Big Band Jazz.

We are playing three of his tunes this year. I love Sanctuary. Angels in the Architecture was a really fun piece too (we played it a few years ago).
