( I'll play him as if he's between his cub and juvie stage as he's not had any official cub rp yet )

User Image

The red male, his pelt streaked black, was rolling in the sand, his legs flailing wildly as if he were having some sort of fit. He wasn't, of course. He was simply trying to scratch his back and since there was a lack of trees and jagged rocks, the sand was his only bet.

He rolled onto his side and pushed himself back onto his back, wriggling there again somewhat helplessly.

Heti was a somewhat chubby, stocky cub. He had short, thick little legs, a wide face, a round belly and a short tail. He was definately cute looking but whilst he was cute he was neither smart nor graceful.

Yes...he was his father's son.

He flipped back onto his stomach, sneezed loudly and stood to shake the sand from his pelt. It clouded the air with thick gold and he sneezed again, much louder this time. Why did the sand get up his nostrils like that? There really was no need for it! Stamping a paw he shook himself again, deciding that the scratch was not quite gone. Dammit...all that rolling was not doing his nose any good! Surely there had to be a better way to do this!

User ImageIt had started out with one little slithering snake, winding through the sand and popping up to check its surroundings. The fair haired cub had been a good boy, minding his mother and sticking close, making sure none of his siblings wandered too far. But he was only a cub afterall, and his curiosity couldn't remain in check forever. So it was when he spotted the serpent that he went speeding off without a second thought, sand flying everywhere as his paws attempted to gain enough grip to propel him forward.

Thinking back on it, he supposed that it was rather strange that his exit of flying sand didn't catch his mother's attention. He wondered why she hadn't called him back, or went after him. But he guessed that his fair colored coat must have blended well with the sand and she hadn't been able to spot him quick enough.

Speeding forward without any regards to where he was going or how much distance he was putting between him and his mother, Calixte continuously reached out for the snake. Each time he felt he might have caught it, he noticed it slithering away only a few feet in front of him. It was amazing to watch the creature move with such speed, and it only spurred him on in a faster chase. He had Firekin in him, and he was determined to catch his prey. But the sheer heat of the sun slowed him down, and before long he felt himself growing weaker and more tired. Finally, he simply had to give up the chase; a fact he wasn't at all happy with.

Pouting, the young cub plopped his rear end down in the sand and waited for his energy to return. A few minutes in, he heard rustling not too far off, and he wondered if perhaps the snake had come back to taunt him. Eyes narrowed and claws flexed as he readied himself for an attack, overheated or not. But before he could spot anything, he heard a loud noise, followed by another and a cloud of sand. He remained still, fearing that he had chanced upon some terrible monster. It was only until after the sand settled that he noticed another lion, rather stocky and short, but around the same age as him.

"Hey!" he called, prepared to defend the Firekin turf if need be. "What're you doing?"

He wriggled his nose, sniffing noisily in an attempt to get rid of any stray particles of irritating sand when he heard the voice. It shocked him, to say the least, and he twisted round, his paws leaving the floor as he attempted to prevent a sneak attack.

What had his dad told him?

Always be alert! Always watch your back!

Well...he'd sort of failed in that...hadn't he? Yep. He had. Well, what his dad didn't find out wouldn't hurt him. And if anyone told him he'd just deny, deny, deny. Way to go, Heti!

In any case he landed again in more clouds of sand, his little legs braced and the fur on his neck fluffed up in a rather humorous manner. His red eyes fixed on something...something weird. It wasn't black or red...in fact...it was sort of sandy coloured. Sandy like the desert. But it had spoken, right? It had eyes, too, right? So...what was it? Not a lion, that was for sure. Lions didn't come in those colours! He extended his head, the shaggy dark fur between his eyes coming to hang across his brow. Only then did he realise that the thing had asked him a question. A rather stupid question, too. Hadn't it been obvious? Oh...and now he'd been reminded and that itch on his back was returning. Maybe he had a flea...if that was the case, Mother would give him a bath and that didn't sound like fun! No way!

"Had a scratch." He replied. "So I scratched it."

He sneezed again, his head shaking from side to side, and then he returned his red eyes to the sandy thing again.

"What are you doing, eh? Where did you come from?" He cast his eyes behind the sandy creature as if looking for its hiding place or...something.

The young cub stood, tense, as he waited for an answer from the other. He was ready for a retreat if need be, even if that didn't seem like a very Firekin thing to do. But he knew his boundaries and he could very well see that this other lion had an advantage when it came to size. Calixte was a little on the large side, but not nearly as big as he could have been.

Sandy ears twitched as he listened to the other, then nodded his head slowly in understanding. "Sounds logical," he observed, not really knowing what to say. The other seemed to regard him as a strange creature that he'd never encountered before, and Cal was getting rather offended by it.

"I was chasing a snake. You scared it off." That sounded better than the truth: that he had actually run out of energy and the snake had out-paced him.

When asked where he came from, it gave him more reason to think that this red and black lion wasn't actually from the Firekin. "I'm a Firekin," he stated, lifting his head in great pride. He hadn't learned much of the pride yet, but he knew that they were fierce fighters. Anyone of their blood had a right to be proud.

"Where did you come from?" he shot back, realizing that he was answering too much and not gaining enough information in return.

Heti snorted, his nose wrinkling as the other responded. He'd scared off a snake? He hadn't seen any snake! He hadn't smelt one either! Was this thing just trying to cause trouble? He looked him up and down, his nose wrinkled, eyes narrowed. Seriously...it made his eyes go weird just looking at him!

However, since he was one to enjoy a bit of banter, he replied a moment later to the best of his abilities. "Well o'course it got scared. I'm a scary lion and one day I'm gonna be a great Guard, just like my dad is." He puffed out his little chest and grinned with a flash of white teeth. He was sure his father would have been proud of him just then. Look at him showing off! It was fantastic! "Must have been a smart snake." He ended, patting a paw to his chest, that smug grin never leaving. That was until the sandy creature continued his answer.

"A...Firekin?" He blinked and drew his head back sharply as if someone had tried to smack him on the nose. "That's a lie! You can't be a Firekin. I'm a Firekin. See this pelt? This black and red, right here? Well, do you?" He tugged at a black strand of his growing mane. "And where's your red and black, eh? The snake run off with it? Was that why you were chasing it, eh?"

Calixted rolled his gray eyes at the other, rather bored with his antics. It was obvious that he was a little lacking in the brains department. But there was something that he had said that had tipped off the younger lion to the fact that this character was part of his own pride. He had said that his father was a guard. He didn't know much, but he knew the Firekin had guards. Did other prides, as well?

"Smart to avoid your stupidity," he grumbled to himself, wishing he hadn't ever bothered with this one. He should have just let him bury himself in the sand and gone back to his mother. Surely she would be worried by now.

When the other seemed genuinely surprised that Cal was a Firekin, he narrowed his eyes and tensed his body, ready to prove himself. Heti would surely be an easy opponent to defeat; Calixte would only have to outsmart him. "Fye-yer-kin," he repeated, slowly to make sure the other fully caught what it was he was trying to say. Yet the other called it a lie!

"You're just red from being out in the sun too long. It burned your pink hide, cub," he retorted, anger flaring up. "I'm the color of the sand, the color of my home. What part of this place do you represent? Other than the rocks, with your sinking intelligence." He huffed, "And I was chasing it because I was hungry. Firekin kill what they eat. You probably just get your food from your mom's belly." No mind that Calixte himself was still depending on his mother. That wasn't the point. The point was to look bigger and tougher.

Right?

Heti snorted angrily (snorting seemed to be an annoying habit of his) and thumped a fore paw into the sand, irritated that this sandy lion-cub would even dare to insult him? Did he not look mean and tough? Was he not bigger? Why pick on someone who could beat you? It didn't make any sense! Who was he calling stupid when he didn't even know that much? Well Heti would show this sandy little lion what happened when you insulted the wrong lion!

"You shut your mouth!" He replied, brows knitted. "I don't have to answer to the likes of you, but I will, cos you clearly need to understand. Firekin. Fire is red. Red like my fur. Red like the fur of everyone here." Well, almost everyone...his mother didn't have much red on her, in fact she had red eyes alone. But red eyes was better than no red at all. "Everyone 'cept you, Sandy. But that ain't all. Fire burns, it attacks anything too dry and weak to stand up to it."

He braced his stubby little paws and puffed out his chest. "So, you think you have the fire, Sandy? Wanna try beating me, eh? Let's see you try!" He lowered his head and lay his ears flat, tail waving slowly from side to side.

This would be easy. This would be like fighting with his siblings! No probs!

"Come on then, lets see if you have what it takes to be a Firekin!"

(( If you're okay with it, we'll let them have a little scuffle and your boy can outsmart Heti xD after that I think they'll get on just fine, lol! ))

(( That sounds good to me 8D ))

The smaller Firekin was beginning to wonder if he had made the right choice. He had always believed himself to be one of the brightest, always thinking things through before he rushed into something. But Heti had made him so angry! The sandy cub wasn't quite sure where all of his courage had arisen from, but he was rather glad for it. He was proving his Firekin blood proud.

One brow raised quizzically at the other at his outburst. Telling someone to shut their mouth? Great comeback. But he had to admit that the other did make a good point about his fur being red, like fire. Then he insulted him by saying he was the only one without red. That was where Calixte had to correct him.

"That's not true!" he yelled. "My siblings don't have red either. Or my dad! Are you insulting my father, punk?" That was enough to get him riled up for a brawl, ready to take on this larger and more intimidating cub. Nobody insulted his family and made a mockery of them. He would show this upstart that he had just as much Firekin blood in him as the next lion.

"The sand can blind, either by reflecting the sun or whirling around and damaging the eyes. You already don't use your brain, so it would be a shame for you to lose anything else. You sure you'd like to go up against me?" He puffed out his chest as well, attempting to seem bigger than the other. He knew it was unlikely that he ever would manage it, but he tried nonetheless. Even if he lost, nobody could say that he didn't have heart and spirit.

"Bring it!"

Heti blinked, utterly confused.

The anger of the cub surprised him but what surprised him more was that there were more lions without any red on them. Hadn't his father said that proper Firekin were red? Or, at the very least, black? His father wouldn't lie to him, would he? But...if there was a chance this sandy one was telling the truth than...what did that mean?

That not all Firekin had fire on their pelts?

"Is that a threat, Sandy?" He replied, wrinkling his nose. "Fine! Lets see what the sand can do!" And he sprang forwards without a single thought, intent on barging straight into the little one. That was generally how he play-fought, keeping low to the ground and forcing the other from their feet. It would perhaps work better when he had a bit more bulk to him. At the moment, though, the size difference between them wasn't so different that it would be an affective attack.

"Maybe it is!" he threw back tactlessly. Hey, he was only a cub, afterall. You couldn't expect him to be perfect with the whole word play.

Calixte had known that it was coming. He had taunted the other cub and now he was going to have to pay the price. This would be his first duel, and of course he had to pick a fight with one of the biggest cubs he had seen. Heti simply seemed large and full of muscle. Although, whether he was trained on how to use his muscles correctly was another matter entirely. That was what gave the fair haired cub his courage. Perhaps this other cub would be clumsy and slow due to his weight. Cal could be quick and tire him out.

That sounded good, right?

As the other cub sprang forward, Calixte braced himself. Adrenaline shot through his body, and suddenly he didn't feel scared or shakey. Time slowed and he was able to see more clearly than before. He noticed tiny things, like each grain of sand and the direction of the wind. He hadn't ever felt this before, and at first it caught him off guard. But then he realized that he could use it to his advantage, and so he changed tactics.

He stood his ground, pretending as if he were going to take the full brunt of the attack. But at the last moment he side-stepped, hoping that the heavier cub's momentum would send him toppling head over paws.

"Over here!" he taunted, a smirk on his face. This was fun!

Calixte's plan worked.

Heti, unable to stop his forward momentum, and with nothing to crash into, tumbled onwards, only stopping when he crashed headlong into the ground, twisting as he tried to regain his paws. In a flurry of sand he craned back his head to spot the jeering little sandy cub.

What?

How had he gotten over there?

"Stay still!" He snapped back, huffing and flexing out his whiskers. Then, with a little growl of irritation he sought his paws, found them, and raised himself up again, blinking through grains of sand that irritated his eyes.
PostPosted: Fri Jan 15, 2010 11:37 am

Calixte laughed, actually enjoying this. He no longer considered it a fight, however, as he simply planned to wear the other out. He had no intention of coming into physical contact. He feared that, if he let the other cub get to him, that he would surely lose. The other had the advantage in sheer weight, and he wasn't about to risk getting squished.

"I am staying still!" he called, blinking. He lowered his upper half and left his rump in the air, wiggling it back and forth. He wondered whether Heti would go after him again, or if he would learn his lesson the first time.

"I bet you didn't see that coming!" he bragged, egging the other on. "I told you that the sand blinded, but you just wouldn't listen." He lifted his head proudly. "I am Firekin, and my coat reflects that of my home. I may not have the fire blazing on my fur, but it's strong in my heart. Nobody can say otherwise." With that, he nodded his head, lifted his body up, then lowered his rump into the sand. He felt he had made his point.

"Uh? You call that staying still? Well I sure don't!" He puffed out his cheeks in irritation and pawed at the sand like an enraged bull. His eyes focused on the other's playful stance and he blinked. Was the sandy lion mocking him? How dare he!

He moved into pounce position, resettled the sand beneath his paws and threw himself at the other again, repeating the first move again. In all honesty he hadn't learnt how to do anything other than throw his weight around. He didn't know that the tactic might not work against someone small and swift like Calixte.

"We'll see about that!" He called.

He had the better fire. All he had to do was prove it!
PostPosted: Fri Jan 15, 2010 12:33 pm

calixte saw it coming. He had been taunting the other Firekin, poking at his ego in an attempt to hurt it. It was almost expected that Heti would repeat the same move and attempt to tackle him once more. Yet the fair-furred cub was ready for it.

As the red and black lion threw himself across the sand, Cali braced himself. In a moment, he thought that maybe he should try and take the blow and see how he would fare in a physical fight. But then he thought better of it, knowing that he wouldn't be much use to his parents or his siblings if he came back limping and sore. So he opted to repeat the earlier situation, and sidestep at the last moment. He grinned widely then turned about, head held higher than ever.

"Don't you ever learn?" he laughed, claws flexing in the sand. "You're too big." It was both an insult and an observation. "You trip over yourself. You can't change direction quickly when I move out of the way." Maybe it was bad to tell your opponent what he was doing wrong, but the younger cub felt too proud not to brag about how much better he was doing. Perhaps it was the Firekin blood.

"Wanna try it again?"

Argh, dammit!

Why wasn't this working!?

He landed face first again, tasting sand in his mouth. With a hiss, he spat to rid himself of the taste of the desert and lifted himself up, shaking his pelt to loosen the sand caught in it. Turning back to the jeering cub he stifled a sneeze and set his paws again.

What would father do in this situation?

Breathing hard, he didn't bother with words this time, throwing himself at the other for the third time. Perhaps speaking was slowing him down? Besides, he couldn't really think up a good enough comeback for the insults right now and what better comeback than to flatten him to the sand?
