I recently received an email talking about what is happening with the wolves out west with them being taken off the endangered list. I have a link to a letter people can sign and send to help stop the killing, hopefully everyone at least takes a look and read what is going on if not send the massage on.

I don't think these people have their facts straight, though I do agree that our tiny, tiny grey wolf population here in the lower 48 states could still use a bit more nurturing.

yeah, in idaho they have moved to pass legilsation to hunt wolves (with serious restriction) a couple years ago.. never heard about it since...

but i'd have to assume the situation is that wolves are begining to prey on livestock and wandering into inhabited suburban areas. i mean thats the claim im not too sure how true that is. but ive had a few friends from northern california and oregon that have had stray wolves wander onto their property and even into their homes.

nothing bad came of that but it certainly is a danger to people.

the issue i think they are worried about most is that wolves are smart enough to realize that we cant hunt or kill wolves in even lightly populated areas. they might start moving into those kinds of areas because livestock is like shooting fish in a barrel for them and we cant shoot them.

in michigan we have a similar issue with deer. of course we dont have to worry about deer attacking livestock but they are slowly creeping into suburban areas because the grass is greener and the hunters cant hunt there.

If the wolves population is reaching a point of coming off the endangered list then keeping them in their territory and not farmland and suburban areas its probably best.

I read that since the re introduction of wolves to Yellowstone the elk population has gone from 20,000 down to around 5,000.

The bulk of that was my dad with a Black Powder Rifle, but that's for another topic..

Certainly, the protection of livestock and home is a good argument for such a thing, but it's a minor one as there are many more humane (and with the price of ammo, cost-effective..) means to preventing Wolves from moving onto one's property, and driving ones already there away.. Sure, spraying your property line with a few dozen or so aerosol cans of concentrated musk can be tedious, but it works, as does a simple dollar-store air horn or other extremely loud noisemaker.

This is just one massive political game to score easy votes from Hunters, Trappers, and even a few illegal Poachers here and there.. With so many other alternatives to hunting Wolves readily and cheaply available, for them to say guns are the only real way to resolve the situation seems to support the theory of politics above all else.
