Recently, I've been hearing that a lot of people prefer black synthetic furniture to wood furniture on guns.

...WHY?! D;

I don't understand how that would make guns look better. Maybe if you duracoated it in some neat colors or painted something cool on it, then yeah, synthetic has the possibility to look a *lot* better than wood. But just plain old black synthetic? Why would anyone like that over a good old, walnut stock?

When I get an AK of some sort I'm probably going to throw polymer furniture on it, because I don't feel so bad soaking plastic to clean out salts from the weapon. Length of pull, I'm sure it's easier to buy a shorter/adjustable stock than cut a wood stock down. And thirdly, you can store stuff in a plastic stock.

I'm aware there are cut out areas for cleaning kits in wooden stocks, but I would imagine that weakens the stock in some way.

Oh, sorry. I should have been a bit more clear. I'm talking solely about aesthetics- not practicality. It's no mystery that 99% of the time, synthetic furniture is more practical.

But damn you for putting synthetics on an AK. xd

EDIT: Wait, if it's a semi-auto variant, do whatever the hell you want. Un-spayed AK-47's, though, are so much cooler with wood. xp

Once you set your handguards on fire once, it gets boring. So in the case of all but the most venerable weapons, K98k, SKS, Garand (although the Sage EBR stock calls to me...) for example, polymer is more modern and practical. Form follows function. So, unless you're rocking your DEagle, practicality wins.

Some people just like it. My bet is the "tactical" bug going around nowadays.

Of course.

But that isn't the focus of the thread. neutral

While I'm a real fan of the look and feel of real wood furniture on a weapon, the risk of marring that beauty by scuff and ding in the field makes me cringe at the thought. I've seen so many beautiful hunting rifles that were ruined by the visual marring of a scrape.

I've come to realize over many hunting seasons that a wooden stock on a rifle is just an invitation to disappointment when you realize you've scraped the wood so deep that nothing will clean up the scar.

That's why I switched to synthetics for my field guns. It's not just the weight savings or other handy reasons. I just don't care if the stock is damaged in the field while using it for what it was built for.

Now pistol grips, on the other hand, are a blast in hard wood. SIG and S&W have done some incredible things with rare woods.

Some guns look better in wood, others look better in synthetics. I wouldn't put synthetic anything on, say, a Garand or Kar98/Gewehr 98, but at the same time wood furniture doesn't look good on a rifle that was designed with synthetics.

Yes, but it's the reason why. Most people have a weapon for practical reasons, not appearance.

Practical reasons don't explain why people like the looks of synthetics though.

That said, some guns would look STUPID in wood. Can you imagine a wood P90? A wood AUG? Yeah. It really is dependent on the gun. Though I must say, an AR with a rich, dark wood would look snazzy. Imagine one of these in varnished mahogany.

I really prefer wood as well. It just looks so much better and even the feel of it appeals to me more. It just seems that every wood gun has its own character due to the wood being different on every gun, where as polymer is just black and every gun looks the same. The thing that really bothers me is when people mix up the two.
