There was a German movie of the same name released back in '08. Watched this on a big Sony flat screen demo at Fry's the other day. Looked fantastic!

I hope they get his death right. Forensic analysis proves conclusively that Canadian fighter pilot Arthur "Roy" Brown did NOT shoot down the Red Baron as is commonly thought. He was killed by either Sergeant Cedric Popkin or Gunner W.J. "Snowy" Evans, both of whom were Australian infantry gunners who fired at the Red Baron with ground mounted machine guns. Yes, that's right. The Red Baron was killed by anti-aircraft fire and not shot down by another fighter pilot. The wound that killed him came from a trajectory that Brown, the only pilot who fired at him before his death, could not have managed. Brown fired from above and behind, but the bullet that killed the Baron came from below and to the right. That, and Brown fired at the Baron four or five minutes before he crash landed, but the wound had to have been inflicted about two minutes before he crash landed. (he would have been unconsious within two minutes of recieving the wound that killed him do to blood loss, but he was in control of the aircraft when it landed, passing out soon after.). The trajectory and time of death/loss of consiousness both support Popkin/Evans, who both fired from the right about two minutes before the Baron died. Take in the fact that Brown fired from very long range and would have needed a lot of luck to hit the Baron, and the evidence is conclusive.

Simply put, the Baron could ONLY have been killed by ground fire. Sorry, Brown, but you didn't shoot him down. No pilot did.

I watched the Nova documentary on that subject. I concur that the forensic evidence placed the killing shot from a machine gun on the ground.

And keep in mind that these were not officially anti-aircraft guns. Just men in the right position at the right time.

von Richthofen was a fool, wounded in the head in prior combat and looking for his death wish that day. Chasing an amateur enemy pilot miles behind enemy lines at roof top level made him an easy mark.
