I think it's really stupid that they put people in jail that fail at killing themsleves...-_-" what point is there in doing so?
PostPosted: Fri Mar 05, 2010 10:18 pm

i think your right, there's no point, they wanted to end it all, they should just go and get some help not be put in jail, your thoughts...

Yeah people who put suicidal people in jail are dumb. It's obvious they need some sort of help, whether it be mental, social, emotional, or they need someone to listen to them. Or they just hate life and want to go. Jail won't stop them from killing themselves. If i was a suicidal in jail, i'd use a caffeteria knife to stab myself during breakfast... or if i want it to be more private grow my nails and bite them into daggers and slit my wrists and pretend like i'm sleeping. There have pry been cases like this in the past.

The reason they put people in jail is because the government gets money for more people in jail. More cimres commited=More money. They could care less if they had problems because all they want is money.

Hopefully none of you work for the F.B.I or something.

Us trying to stop them from putting people in jail won't work...it's like us trying to get them to allow gay marriage...

Suicide is a form of murder, which is a felony. So yeah... it's not stupid. And it only happens when you fail and get caught.

Still, I had a friend...she tried to kill herself. She's bipolar. They kicked her out of school, and they are trying to send her to jail. She's normally the sweetest person.

And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall,

Why does it matter if it's a form of murder? If a person ha help, they wouldn't try it. My step brother killed himself in January. I know that if he failed and went to jail he still would have done it. I have suicidal tendencies and now that I have help, I feel so much better and less like I shouldn't be here anymore.

Jail isn't the best place for ppl who try to kill themselves...b/c you can kill yourself in jail, then what? You did it in jail instead of outside?

well jail isnt exactly just sitting there with nothing to do. many times a jail is an easier way to control a suicidal person while you get them help. Mental institutions equipped to incapacitate dangerous people are not as common as you'd think.

@Wyte Rabbit
Glad your doing better after getting help. That is important.

Clearly I have missed some huge change in the legal system and American Psychological Associations standards for dealing with suicidal individuals.

People who fail a suicide attempt go to the hospital, might be placed in a psychological hospital for a month or so, and continue with therapy for a while. I have no idea what you guys are talking about.

Also, the government doesn't get money for people in jail. They have to provide all of the necessities and security for each jail mate, so tax payer's money is used. There isn't any profit, in fact the current jail system is a huge drain on money.

You would think so, but that only applies for long term inprisonment. Holding them for a short while, until somebody comes up and posts bail, is very profitable. They also make money on court costs and stuff. Course I don't know how long people are put in jail for suicide, but yeah. In America, its ALL about the money.

Oh, on another note, Jails are becoming the de-facto mental healthcare facilities in some areas, because the government CUT BACK FUNDING for such facilities. That might also have something to do with it. Maybe its just cheaper to send someone to prison than it is a mental health care facility. Or, from a government perspective, you HAVE to have jails, you DON'T have to provide assistance for anyone who needs it, so better to just send them to jail and let the prison staff deal with that.

Bingo

Jails are secure and controlled environments (we hope). The lack of hospitals capable of dealing with this kind of patient is kind of a problem

I must honestly disagree with this...You cant be charged with murder when committing it with the only thing that is truly yours... And if that is true... that is beyond messed up...
