There had been just enough time to find Kaa a suitable resting place, and Zuri had made sure she was close by, before the storm rolled in. He'd left the the pretty lady to her new home, surprisingly reluctantly, and managed to skirt inside his own cave in the nick of time.
The sky turned black with the onslaught of the storm. Thunder rolled. Lightning crackled across the sky, and illuminated the sandy beach below with an eerie light. The ride roared against the cliffs and Zuri, who was not unused to such noise, found himself almost lulled to sleep by the combined sounds of the storm.
He rested at the base of his cave, paws tucked under his chin, and watched the dark sky outside as it exploded with light, and then didn't explode with light.
Wrapped into all of that lovely chaos were the hypnotic voices of his muse. The purple lion listened attentively as the stone spoke to him, but thoughts of Kaa lingered at the back of his mind.
She had been very nice. He'd rather liked her.

Jatukaa gazed around her, quite pleased with the cave that Zuri had helped her find. It wasn't extremely large, but from what she could tell, it went very deep into the cliff face. She walked back into it a short distance, but the lack of light pushed her back closer to the entrance. It was quite peaceful, if a little barren. She'd worry about decorating it later.
She settled down on a smooth patch of rock and gazed out the opening at the stormy sky, shivering a bit. It wasn't quite as frightening, now that she had shelter, but still . . . she was a bit scared.
Closing her eyes, she attempted to relax. Her thoughts turned back to Zuri, the nice lion who had welcomed her to this strange and new place. It was truly lovely, or had been until this storm brewed up. He'd been very pleasant and she'd been a bit disappointed when he left. Still, she was a stranger to this place and she could understand his feelings.
Kaa twitched, another shiver running down her spine. She'd felt it before. There was something strange about this place and she honestly had no idea what it was. She'd felt it since she walked into the area. She half wondered if she was losing her mind. Why else would she be hearing these things . . .
Hello . . . welcome . . . I've been waiting for you . . . yes . . . we've been waiting for you . . .
Kaa shot straight to her feet as a loud crash of thunder shook the air. What was that?! Kaa could swear she'd just heard someone speak.
. . . welcome . . . we've been waiting . . .
Kaa yelped. She must be losing her mind. She glanced around furiously, but there was no one there. She was hearing voices?

The fury of the storm picked up. Wind whistled passed the caves with an unsettling ferocity, and the ominous sound of its anger made Zuri shiver. It had been some time since he'd seen a storm this wild, and he hoped that it didn't change Kaa's mind about making the Kizingo'zaa her new home.
It would have been a pity if she'd left before he got a chance to know her better. In all honesty, he was surprised that he actually wanted to see her again.
It wasn't everyday somebody, let alone a complete stranger, left such an impression on him.
And, when he thought about it, nothing particular special had passed between them! Why, then, was he so interested? Zuri frowned, and his brow furred in thought.
The sound of Kaa's yelp from the neighbouring cave, which was rather smaller than his own, made the young lion sit up a little straighter. He strained his ears for any repeat of the noise, but a crash of thunder drowned everything else out temporarily.

Kaa's trembled with fear, stretched out on the ground, with her paws held tight over her face. She was fervently telling herself over and over that she was just imagining things, that it was just her mind playing tricks on her since she was tired and scared by the storm. It wasn't real, it wasn't real, it wasn't real . . .
But we are real . . . we are here . . . we are your friends . . . we have been waiting, hoping for you to come . . . we are here for you, Jatukaa . . .
The voices wouldn't stop! They were coming from inside her own head? Was she truly going insane? Kaa had no idea what was going on. Another wave of thunder crashed through the air and she whimpered with dread.
. . . do not be afraid, please . . . we are here for you . . . always here for you . . .
A strange squeaking noise filled the air and suddenly the area around her was filled with small black shapes, whirling around her. With a scream, Jakutaa hurled herself out into the rain. She ran blindly, scrabbling on the rock surfaces. Somehow she found her way to Zuri's cave and she threw herself in, filled with terror.

Her scream was carried to him on the wind. Zuri's fullt attention, which had already been perked by the yelp he thought he'd heard earlier, instantly belonged to the plight of the poor lady he'd abandoned in her own dark and creepy cave. His heart went out to her, and the young lion instantly regretted his decision to leave her alone.
Damn his awkward personality and need for personal space. It made him even more uncomfortable to think that he'd enabled the suffering of another creature.
At once he was on his feet, prepared to go out into the rain and rescue her from the storm and whatever else plagued her, but it turned out he didn't need to go very far at all. Kaa flung herself into his home, and Zuri let out a little 'oomph' of surprise when her soft body connected with his larger one. She'd hit him with enough force to knock him onto his a**, and he fell onto it with a dull thud. It hadn't hurt.
He stared at her. Lightning flashed overhead, and the cave they currently shared brightened ominously for only a moment.
"I was just coming to get you," he informed her calmly, even though his heart was racing with guilt and the fact that she was there. He wasn't used to having guests.

Kaa felt mortified for having crashed into Zuri and knocked him to the ground, but her feelings of fear overwhelmed everything else and she ignored the other things completely. She huddled next to him, shivering and staring wildly at the mouth of the cave. She was afraid to look him in the eye, but knew that she owed him some kind of explanation.
Thankfully, the voices seemed to have quieted down somewhat. Whatever had been whirling around her head in her own cave had disappeared too. Great, now she was seeing things too?
Turning back to Zuri, she managed a few words through her chattering teeth.
"I-I-I'm s-sorry. D-d-didn't m-mean to c-crash into you and kn-knock you over."
Kaa was annoyed, despite her fear and took a few deep breaths before she continued.
"I'm really s-sorry, but I got very scared. The storm and all of the thunder and I swear, I think I'm going crazy or something."
She bit her tongue then, not wanting to admit to Zuri that she was hearing and seeing things. What if he thought she was mad and kicked her out. She couldn't bear to be outside or go back to her own cave again. She was terrified.

One moment she was not touching him, and the next she was. Zuri tensed when she pressed closer to him, surprised by the proximity, but relaxed easily when he realized that it wasn't totally opposed to his liking. In fact, if he was going to be completely honest, he'd have to admit that he was even enjoying it.
Her terror upset him and, while he longed to soother her, it also made him feel brave and strong. These things made him feel manly and Zuri liked that. Being manly was good.
"Its fine," he murmured quietly, understanding, "you don't have to explain anything to me."
After growing up in the Kizingo'zaa, Zuri was used to erratic and occasionally crazy behaviour. This was not the first time he'd had his home invaded, although he'd never cuddled with any of the intruders before.
He tried not to think about that. Kaa may have been a stranger, but she seemed to need this from him right now. It wouldn't kill him to share this much of himself with her. Would it?
Something she'd said stuck a cord, however, and he sighed in realization.
"Hearing voices, are you?" It was a completely serious question.

Some part in the back of Kaa's mind was registering the fact that she really enjoyed being cuddled up with a big, strong, and handsome lion. She was not adverse to that at all. In fact, other than being well and truly terrified, she was quite enjoying herself. First, however, she needed to figure out if she really was crazy or not.
Zuri's soothing voice helped to calm her nerves somewhat and she was just beginning to relax when he asked her about voices.
Her head snapped up and she gaped at him. She locked eye contact with him and tried to decide if he was making fun of her or not. He was being completely serious.
" . . . Yes. I am hearing voices. How did you know? Am I crazy? Am I losing my mind? Because I swear I hear voices when there is no one there and I could swear I was seeing things too. It was awful."
She cringed as more thunder shook the air. It seemed to be less strong than before though, so perhaps they were past the worst of it. She turned back to Zuri and asked him desperately, "Do you have any idea what is going on?"

He knew exactly what was going on, and he felt sorry for not filling her in earlier. As a native to these lands, he had grown up with the voices; had known about them since the day of his birth, had shared them with his family and fellow pride members. It hadn't occurred to him that a foreigner would not be familiar with the ways of the people, and the nature of their lands.
"Yes, you're crazy," There was a teasing lilt to his voice and he winked at her. After clearing his throat, he continued more seriously. "It is not something to be afraid of, though. It is this place. The lands- it happens."
"Everyone here can hear voices." He explained patiently, and fancied himself a good teacher, "It is your muse, reaching out to you. Listen when it speaks to you, and everything will make more sense."
It was quite possible that he sounded crazy. Zuri didn't know how this knowledge would fall on the ears of a stranger. He braced himself for more questions.

Kaa stared at Zuri, convinced that she hadn't heard him right. After all, he couldn't have just called her crazy and then admitted that the entire pride was.
Seriously?
The entire pride heard voices? Every member? Well, that was just absurd . . . how could a land affect those living on it that way? Still, she had to admit that it was the only thing that made sense. After all, she had heard them herself. At least it was a relief to know that if she was crazy, at least in some way, that she wasn't the only one. Misery loves company, after all . . .
Jatukaa listened closely, trying to make sense of what he was saying. He wanted her to listen to the crazy little voices in her head? This was a good idea? Her expression showed her skepticism.
"Are you serious? Everyone here hears voices, you included? And you just accept this as natural? Is there something in the food or the water, or even the air?" asked Kaa, completely bewildered. "I can't believe this. You must be joking, right?"

Her skepticism did not catch him off guard. For the first time since inviting this lioness to stay in his cave, and with the exception of the way they huddled together so closely, Zuri felt in his element. He knew his homelands, and he knew that he could not expect her to just believe everything that he proposed.
It would have been foolish and stupid of her to do so, and Zuri admired her for possessing sense enough to doubt him.
"We accept it because it is natural," he corrected her gently, "It is the way it has always been for us."
Her other questions were more personal. His heart beat ominously for a pair of silent seconds before he offered her the truth.
"I hear voices," he murmured honestly, "the stone speaks to me."
It was true. Even now, he could hear the whispers at the back of his head, but did not wish to repeat their words. They were awfully forward, these rocks.

"So wait . . . stone talks to you?"
Jatukaa mulled this over in her mind, grateful that the warmth of Zuri next to her had helped her to stop shivering. He seemed very honest and straightforward about the whole situation and he certainly didn't seem like someone who would lead her astray. And as strange is this explanation sounded, it did explain that strange feeling she'd had since she stepped foot in the lands. There was something weird about this place, but . . . it didn't necessarily seem like a bad thing.
When Kaa was a cub, she'd talk to inanimate objects, giving them personalities and such. This wasn't really that different. The inanimate objects just . . . spoke back.
A squeaking sound from the mouth of the cave caught her attention and she stared as a small, bedraggled and soaked shape flapped pitifully on the stone ground. It was . . . a bat? Kaa hurried over to it and gently used a paw to help bring it in out of the rain. The small creature squeaked at her.
There you are. I wondered where you'd gotten to. What a nasty storm.
Kaa shrieked and backed away again, startled. She glanced over at Zuri and then back at the bat.
"You . . . you're the voice I heard?"

The strangeness of the Kizingo'zaa lands was certainly not a bad thing. They were a peaceful, eccentric people who loved life and offered a safe haven for friends, family and even passing strangers to rest and live comfortably. His home was a wonderfully unique place, and Zuri was profoundly proud of his heritage. He was the song of the Song Keeper and also of the Protector. There was a lot for him to take pride in.
He watched through hooded eyes as Kaa stood up and flew to the aid of the soaking bat that had collapsed at the mouth of his cave. A soft smile lightened up his face in the gloom, and Zuri felt a swell of appreciation for this pretty lady as she spoke to the little black mammal. She was beginning to accept what he'd told her as the truth, and a part of him liked to think her smooth transition was a reflection of his teaching. It made him feel good.
"I believe you've found your muse," he smirked knowledgeably at her.

Kaa blinked a few times in Zuri's direction, unsure of what to say. The small black creature in front of her was slowly attempting to shake the water out of it- excuse me, his fur. He flapped weakly a few times on the ground before he managed to make it to her paw. Using his nimble feet, he slowly half climbed half flapped his way up to her chest. There he clung to her fur and hung upside down, looking for all the world like a strange necklace or pendant.
There . . . that is much better. Yes, I am the voices you heard. Mine and my brethren. There was a colony of us in the cave you were in . . . whispered the voice in the back of her mind.
Jatukaa still gaped at the small creature, still having a hard time believing that the voice she heard was coming from this bat.
"Why can I hear you?" she asked, completely puzzled. It was simply meant to be. We are here for you and you are for us . . . I would like to stay with you, if I may. Except when the sun is up, of course. Then I will stay here . . .
Jatukaa couldn't say no to her new little friend. Her heart went out to the bat. Somehow she felt . . . right. As if she'd been waiting for this. For the first time since the storm began, she felt happy.
She turned back to Zuri and managed a shaky grin.
"I found a friend," she said, chuckling.

"You have made a couple of friends tonight," Zuri agreed, and tried to keep the stiffness out of his voice. He was glad that she had found her muse, and glad that the little bat was unharmed, but he hoped that she wouldn't forget about him now that everything was making sense. A part of him was worried that she wouldn't need him anymore.
It was silly of him to be so concerned, and the young male did his best to hide it. They had only just met, after all! She had no obligation to like him simply because he'd been the first of their people to show her kindness.
It was just that… well, it was rare for him to meet somebody that he could get along with so easily. Not because he was mean or even crazy, but because he was so painfully shy.
Outside the storm continued to rage. Rain hammered a relentless tattoo against the cliffs and Zuri, demonstrating a bit more brass than usual, gestured for her to return to his side with a paw.
"Would you like to sleep out the storm together?"
