She had been up with the dawn - an unusual thing for a lioness who was most active in the evening when her muses were awake and busy in the open air. But today was a special day. A very special day and she didn't want anything to go wrong. It was Miminiwa's crowning day, the day he would become a king of the firefly colony down by the beautiful pool. The day he joined her in leadership of those tiny, beautiful insects who she so loved and adored.
She had busied herself with sweeping away and stray leaves from the banks of the water, making sure that the spongy, soft grass - kept short by grazing rabbits - was perfectly fit for kingly paws. Then, she had busied herself with picking flowers from the nearby hedgerows and laying them about, on the ground, in the low boughs of trees. Their scent filled the air, making it seem somewhat dreamy and luxurious. But that was not the end. No. Cleaning and decorating done, there was also the little matter of the crown.
She still wore hers upon her head from her crowning the day before. Lucie (or Izo as she was known by Mimi alone) had spent a long time crafting the one she wore and now she was going to make another. The problem was she was working to a deadline. There'd be no dithering with this piece!
She had spent a great deal of time seeking out the right materials - which was luckily an easier job as she already knew the rough locations of each. And then, lying on her belly with the materials spread out in front of her, she began.
First she found the length of strong but flexible branch which would form the frame in which she would construct the crown. She tied it to form a hoop that she thought would be big enough to fit over Mimi's ears and puffy mane. Then, when the frame was made, she gathered up the vines and leaves and delicate flowers. A deep breath and she began.
The weaving was a tricky job and took many attempts to get it right. Petals, leaves and vines were easily damaged by tooth and claw, but she was as gentle as a lion could be, threading all into its rightful place. And, by the time the sun was setting the piece was finished and she sat back briefly to admire her handy work. She was actually rather pleased with the outcome and it seemed a much better crown than the one she wore. She supposed that it only made sense. One got better with practise and her crown had really been the prototype. Either way, when it withered or broke, she'd make another and another. It was hard work, but the satisfaction of seeing the finished piece made it all worth it.
Sitting back on her haunches she glanced up, noticing the failing light for the first time. And, as if sensing their queen had completed the King's crown, a few fireflies twinkled into being - like stars. Her heart grew warm and she purred deeply.
"You like the crown then, my darlings?" She asked softly. "Let's just hope your future king does, too."

Miminiwa was both a morning and a night person. He had no problem waking up as the sun rose and staying out late under the light of the stars. Sometimes he wondered if the stars held the same power and effect on him as the sun did. He did however know that they did not speak to him the way his muse did but he always felt alive and awake whenever he wasn't sleeping.
His mind was almost always awake and wandering even when he was asleep. It was active often creating vivid dreams that made him excited to go out and play.
Today, however, was not a normal day. It was a special occasion in which Mimi found himself spending the whole day prepping for. He didn't want to disappoint his queen. No, she was perhaps the single most important thing in his life, ever since he met her things had been different. And he couldn't have asked for anything better.
The pink lion had spent the day bathing and conversing with the sun about what he might expect or what he could do to make the day even better. He also went searching for a rock like the one he had sacrificed for his muse.
While it had taken him a while to find it, in his maw he carried a stone that had tints of pink and was able to reflect the sun. Since it had amazed him when he had first stumbled upon in, it was difficult to find something decent to represent his muse, he figured it would make a pleasant present for Izo.
He picked his way through the vegetation following the same path he had taken the day before. As he emerged from the underbrush he grinned seeing his friend.

She heard the sound of approaching paws and the rustle of undergrowth and turned to see him. Her heart lifted and the smile spread its way instantly across her face. To others looking upon them, it might seem obvious that they loved one another. But, despite it being so painfully obvious, this girl was unaware of the strength of her feelings for him...or partly unaware.
She knew that she loved him. She just didn't understand the type of love she was feeling.
She turned back to smile at the fireflies and bobbed her head. "I think he will." And with that she left the crown sitting in its place and swept up to greet him, buffetting up against him almost roughly.
"Missed you." She chirped, her eyes softening. "Are you ready, darling Mimi?" She wondered how he was feeling. Whether he felt as excited as she had, and nervous, and...and...many other indescribable feelings. All she knew was that she was priviliged to have him by her side as King, priviliged that she'd get to share this moment with him, just as he had with her.

The firefly lion felt his heart swell with warmth as he watched the smile spread across her lips. She was so pretty, in such an elegant sort of way. She truly was a queen, not just of the fireflies but of his heart. He was a male who was didn't really understand emotions very well, not to say that he was emotionless because of that but rather that he was a male full of emotion but didn't quite understand what they meant. All he understood was that he was feeling something pleasant and quite unlike anything he had ever experience before.
But he didn't deem it necessary to dwell on what he was feeling but to just enjoy it. It was pleasant feeling that he enjoyed greatly and he wanted to keeping doing so.
"I always miss you when you aren't with me," he replied ignoring the fact that it was a rather corny statement but he couldn't help but feel just like that. "As ready as I will ever be my queen."

She smiled up at him, golden eyes sparkling - much like the way the fireflies did. "That's good to hear." She replied teasingly. "It's a good reason why we shouldn't spend too much time apart then, isn't it?" She gave him an affectionate and teasing nudge. "Well, if you're ready, let's begin!"
She lead the way back towards the place she had left the crown and side-stepped so he could see it. "Your crown, my king." She turned to look back at him, his incredibly bright, sparkling pelt impossible not to spot against the backdrop of greenery."I'm rather proud of this one, in fact. Its stronger than my own so should last a lot longer."
She moved over to it and hooked a paw beneath it, lifting it a little so he could see it better. "Have you a speech planned?"

The firefly lion chuckled at her response as he went to press his cheek against hers. "I suppose you have a point Izo," he told her opting to use a shorten version of her child name because no matter how many times she changed her name, or what happened she would always be his Izo. He was confident that it would never change. He trotted behind her in silence keeping his eyes upon her. He found his smile growing broader just from looking at her, she was definitely a beautiful female and he was grateful that she wanted to spend her time with him.
When she revealed the crown he chuckled softly. "It is wonderful, perfect," he praised her stepping closer to her. She had worked so hard and it had shown in the detail and design of his crown. "Yes and no," he admitted, he had known this day was coming but he hadn't prepared anything. But it wasn't his style to rehearse a speech, he would just say exactly how he felt.

She smiled, purring at his compliments towards the crown. She wouldn't tell him, but she had put a lot of effort and love into it. She hadn't wanted it to be a complete mess and then for it to ruin the whole occasion.
"Well, plan or no plan, perhaps its better that you don't rehearse and just sort of...speak from the heart. Its what I did, sort of, and I don't regret a single moment of it..."
And she turned to look at the fireflies, busying themselves with flight and looking pretty and touching the water's surface. "...And I have a feeling that the fireflies know your heart without hearing your words. I think they're looking forward to having you as a King."
She leaned against him a little. "You do sparkle like one."

He nodded in agreement, she had a point. It was better to let the words just flow from his lips than to plan everything out. Besides everything always seemed to turn out better for him when he didn't go forward with a plan. No, had he gone through his entire life with a plan he would have never discovered Izo or become friends with her. And that was something he would never regret. The blue and white female was arguably the best thing that had ever happened to him.
Meeting her had rocked his world, in a good way.
"Exactly, it's not my thing to rehearse something like this anyway," he openly admitted with a small shrug as he pushed his head under her chin. "I suppose it's time to give that speech isn't it?" he asked her pulling away. He already had the beginning forming in his mind.

She smiled adoringly up at him and then nodded, taking a step back. "A good a time as any." She replied, nodding her head in the direction of the fireflies that buzzed lazily around the water and amongst the trees and above their heads.
"I'll be right here." She continued softly. And she took another step back, lifting the crown gently in her jaws so that she was ready to place it upon his head and crown him as King Miminiwa of the Fireflies.
Her heart was filled with excitement then and she fell silent, dipping her head a little and closing her eyes to block out the rest of the world.
