I'm a bit confused right now. I was corrected on an exercise where I had written "sanbiki inu wa". The correct version apparently is "sanbiki no inu wa".

Can someone explain to me why the の is used in this context? My lesson didn't explain that at all. ><

I dont know what sanbiki is D: And Google Translate has failed me!

But my best guess is that the 'の' is possessive and shows that sanbiki belongs to the inu, or is a description OF the inu.

Oh, if only I knew what sanbiki was...

Sanbiki is 3 plus the counter for animals. So Sanbiki no inu means 3 dogs.

Which is a description of the dogs, in a way, so I guess that's why no is required.

Well then, yeah, the 'no' is because its the amount OF dogs which counts as a description in a weird way. : D
